Dengue fever cases continue to rise in Eastern Visayas with nine deaths and 2,678 patients downed by mosquito bites from January 1 to July 9 this year, the Department of Health (DOH) reported on Tuesday (July 12).(Photo courtesy of Tacloban city health office) TACLOBAN CITY - Dengue fever cases continue to rise in Eastern Visayas with nine deaths and 2,678 patients downed by mosquito bites from January 1 to July 9 this year, the Department of Health (DOH) reported on Tuesday. The number of cases this year is 727 percent higher compared to the same period in 2021 with 323 cases. The DOH has no available data on the number of deaths in 2021. DOH regional information officer Jelyn Lopez-Malibago said 89 more cases were recorded from July 3 to 9 in the region's six provinces. "The DOH records an increase of dengue fever cases in the region based on the pattern that case usually rises every three to four years. This is expected considering that the last outbreak was experienced last 2019," Malibago said in a phone interview. In 2019, the region recorded 26,263 dengue fever cases and 75 deaths for the entire year. From January 1 to July 9, deaths have been reported in the towns of Jaro and Ormoc City in Leyte; Taft and Hernani in Eastern Samar; Calbayog City, Samar; and Maasin City, Liloan, and Padre Burgos in Southern Leyte. Of the 2,678 cases, including deaths, 979 were logged in Leyte province, 878 in Southern Leyte, 239 in Samar, 239 in Eastern Samar, 224 in Biliran, and 119 in Northern Samar. The DOH said 47 villages in Ormoc City, Tacloban City, Leyte, Eastern Samar, Southern Leyte, and Biliran provinces have a clustering of cases or have three to four infected. "The DOH has strengthened its surveillance, health promotion, education, and advocacy activities and has conducted meetings with local governments and other partner agencies in order to mitigate the further increase of cases and deaths caused by dengue," Malibago added. The health department reminded the public to do the task of preventing dengue such as the "4S" strategy, especially since the rainy season has started. The "4S" strategy cover the search and destroy mosquito breeding places, seeking early consultation, self-protection methods, and support fogging/spraying only in hot spot areas, where an increase in cases is registered for two consecutive weeks to prevent an outbreak. Dengue fever is marked by the onset of sudden high fever, severe headache, and pain behind the eyes, muscles, and joints. Some may develop rashes and varying degrees of bleeding in different parts of the body. The health department asked city and town mayors to regularly organize cleanup campaigns focusing on the destruction of mosquito-breeding places in their areas. (PNA) }

Dengue cases still on the rise in Eastern Visayas

(File image) TACLOBAN CITY - Dengue fever cases in Eastern Visayas continue to rise this week with seven deaths and 1,856 patients downed by mosquito bites from January 1 to June 11 this year, the Department of Health (DOH) reported on Wednesday. DOH regional information officer Jelyn Lopez-Malibago said 102 more cases were recorded between June 5 to 11, lower than the 217 new cases recorded from the last week of May to early June. "The number of cases this year is 545 percent higher compared to the same period in 2021 when we only had more than 200 cases," Malibago said. From January 1 to June 11, deaths have been reported in the towns of Jaro and Ormoc City in Leyte; Taft and Hernani in Eastern Samar; Calbayog City, Samar; and Maasin City and Padre Burgos in Southern Leyte. Of the 1,863 cases, including deaths, 709 were logged in Leyte province, 570 in Southern Leyte, 202 in Samar, 144 in Eastern Samar, 160 in Biliran, and 78 in Northern Samar. "With the high cases, we must not forget to do our task in preventing dengue such as doing our '4S' strategy, especially that rainy season has already started," Malibago said. The "4S" strategy covers the search and destroy mosquito breeding places, seeking early consultation, self-protection methods, and support fogging/spraying only in hot spot areas, where an increase in cases is registered for two consecutive weeks to prevent an outbreak. Dengue fever is marked by the onset of sudden high fever, severe headache, and pain behind the eyes, muscles, and joints. Some may develop rashes and varying degrees of bleeding in different parts of the body. DOH warns of leptospirosis this rainy season

TACLOBAN CITY - The Department of Health (DOH) 8 (Eastern Visayas) has warned that frequent rainfall could trigger a rise in cases of leptospirosis, an illness that has killed eight residents in the region this year. DOH-8 information officer Jelyn Lopez-Malibago said Friday the rain may cause flooding in low-lying communities, forcing people to wade in floodwaters. "We should avoid leptospirosis through proper waste disposal and regular cleaning of surroundings. If we fail to do this, there will be more breeding places for rats in our surroundings," she added. Leptospirosis is caused by the Leptospira spirochetes bacteria that is spread through rat urine. Its modes of transmission include wading in contaminated floodwaters and ingesting contaminated food or water. If wading in floodwater is inevitable, Malibago said, people should wear boots and gloves. The public is also advised to drain potentially contaminated water; control rodents in the house by using traps or poison; and maintain cleanliness. From January 1 to May 28, the illness had sent to hospital 53 residents in the region. Leptospirosis deaths were reported in Tacloban City, Abuyog, and Hilongos in Leyte; Padre Burgos and Hinunangan in Southern Leyte; Basey and Catbalogan City in Samar; and in Maydolong, Eastern Samar. The bacterium has an incubation period of seven to 10 days before the onset of symptoms, which include high fever, muscle pain, eye redness, chills, severe headache, vomiting, diarrhea, and yellowish skin discoloration. If left untreated, leptospirosis may cause kidney failure, brain damage, massive internal bleeding, and death. (PNA) }

(Photo courtesy of Jonathan Mendez) TACLOBAN CITY - The Department of Health (DOH) in Eastern Visayas has expressed support for fogging activities to combat the rising cases of dengue fever in the region. DOH regional information officer Jelyn Lopez-Malibago said fogging is highly recommended in communities with high cases of the mosquito-borne disease. "Dengue is a fatal disease and in order to avoid emergency cases and deaths, we have to implement precautionary measures such as fogging," Malibago said in a press briefing Wednesday. Other strategies to fight the disease include searching and destroying of mosquito breeding places, seeking early consultation, and self-protection methods. Dengue cases this week rose to 1,568 from 1,361 last week, according to DOH. One more victim died, raising the dengue death toll to six this year. The additional death was reported in Ormoc City, Leyte. Earlier, deaths have been reported in Jaro, Leyte; Taft, Eastern Samar; Maasin City and Padre Burgos in Southern Leyte, and Calbayog City, Samar. Of the 1,568 cases in the region, 613 cases were recorded in Leyte, 500 in Southern Leyte, 174 in Samar, 117 in Eastern Samar, 105 in Biliran, and 59 in Northern Samar. Clustering of cases has been recorded in Ormoc City, Baybay City, and Palo, in Leyte province; Llorente and Taft in Eastern Samar; Laoang in Northern Samar; Naval in Biliran province, Padre Burgos, San Juan, Saint Bernard, Pintuyan, and Maasin City in Southern Leyte; and Catbalogan City and Catbalogan and Sta. Eastern Visayas records 1.3K HIV/AIDS cases in nearly 4 decades

FIGHTING HIV/AIDS. The Department of Health regional office in Palo, Leyte. The office reported on Wednesday (June 1, 2022) that cases of human immunodeficiency virus and acquired immune deficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS) in Eastern Visayas have reached 1,399 in the past 38 years. (PNA file photo) TACLOBAN CITY - Cases of human immunodeficiency virus and acquired immune deficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS) in Eastern Visayas have reached 1,399 in the past 38 years, the Department of Health (DOH) reported on Wednesday. About 92 of those infected have died, Department of Health Eastern Visayas information officer Jelyn Lopez-Malibago said in a press briefing. Of the 1,399 cases recorded from 1984 to May 2022, 736 were in Leyte province, 212 in Samar, 148 in Northern Samar, 129 in Southern Leyte, 107 in Eastern Samar, and 67 in Biliran. Leyte province also recorded the highest number of deaths at 40, followed by Northern Samar (15), Southern Leyte (11), Samar (10), Eastern Samar (10), and Biliran (6). Majority or 92.28 percent of the infected are male while only 7.72 percent are female. About 56.64 percent of the infected are between the ages of 25 to 34. The DOH has no available annual breakdown of cases during the briefing. The leading mode of transmission of HIV/AIDS remains to be male to male sex, multiple sex partners, and sex with the opposite gender. "Aside from unprotected sex and mother-to-child transmission, other ways to get infected with diseases is transmission of contaminated blood," Malibago added. She said this is alarming, prompting them to continue to partner with other agencies to address the further spread of HIV/AIDS. The DOH targets that by the end of this year, some 90 percent of all persons with HIV would be aware of their health status and start taking medications. HIV is a virus that attacks the immune system. If untreated, a person's immune system will eventually be destroyed, according to Avert, an organization based in the United Kingdom. AIDS, on the other hand, refers to a set of symptoms and illnesses that occur at the very final stage of HIV infection. (PNA) }

"With the cases, we would like to reiterate that Covid-19 is not the only problem in the region in terms of diseases. We must not forget to do our task in preventing dengue such as doing our '4S' strategy, especially that rainy season has already started," Malibago said. The "4S" strategy covers the search and destroy mosquito breeding places, seeking early consultation, self-protection methods, and support fogging/spraying only in hot spot areas, where an increase in cases is registered for two consecutive weeks to prevent an impending outbreak. Dengue fever is marked by the onset of sudden high fever, severe headache, and pain behind the eyes, muscles, and joints.
