Girls lacrosse: Messalonskee showing no signs of rust
Eagles are 5-0 this season, scoring 85 goals, while allowing just seven defensively.
By Dave DyerKennebec Journal/Morning Sentinel
You’ll find no signs of rust with the Messalonskee girls lacrosse team.
After missing a year due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Eagles have not only picked up where they left off to start the 2021 season, they’ve gotten better. On May 20, 2019, Messalonskee beat Brunswick 15-9 to improve to a 3-5 record. Today, the Eagles are 5-0 on the season. They’ve scored 85 goals (an average of 17 per game) during that stretch. They’ve allowed just seven goals total on defense. There’s only been one game so far this season a 9-3 win over Maranacook/Winthrop on May 1 where Messalonskee has allowed more than one goal.

Top storylines: Avoiding a COVID-19 pause may come down to luck, but navigating a season in which teams can expect games postponed or cancelled will be a key. With teams playing more regionally-based schedules, will new rivalries emerge?
Changes: The biggest change is the wearing of masks at all times. Athletes who competed in winter sports should have an easier time adjusting. For boys lacrosse players wearing helmets, keeping the mask from sliding down could prove difficult. It will be up to officials and coaches to help make sure masks are always worn properly.
