Des Moines Superintendent Tom Ahart resigned and is leaving his position in June with a remaining year of salary and benefits to be paid to him.

Tom Ahart is leaving Iowas largest school district after nearly a decade as Des Moines Public Schools superintendent.

Ames school board approved a three-year contract Monday with a school administrator from Chicago to be the next superintendent.

Ames High School is looking for a new principal.

More details will come in the weeks and months ahead about how Ames plans to address pandemic-driven learning loss, but the district is already hiring a learning recovery director.

Risner and the school board reached an agreement whereby she would resign at the end of the current fiscal year, June 30, 2021.
