Surge in crime, defund the police push are top issues in House special election

Taking a page from a Republican playbook that resulted in some unexpected victories in House elections last November, GOP candidate Mark Moores is focusing much of his campaign in Tuesday’s special election for a vacant congressional seat in New Mexico over a surge in crime and the push by some on the left to “defund the police.”

Yvette Herrell on Liz Cheney: Reps aren t entitled to leadership

WASHINGTON – U.S. Rep. Yvette Herrell, New Mexico’s lone Republican lawmaker in Congress, would not tell the Sun-News Wednesday whether she supported the ouster of Rep. Liz Cheney, R-Wyo., from her leadership position as the chair of the House Republican Conference. What Herrell did say, in a statement, was that no Member of Congress is entitled to a leadership position. A conference vote May 12 removed Cheney from her role as the third-ranking Republican in the House of Representatives. Votes were cast by voice in a closed-door meeting at the Capitol. Cheney has been a frequent critic of former President Donald Trump and his provably false claims that the 2020 election was stolen claims which spurred the deadly U.S. Capitol insurrection in January. Cheney voted to impeach the former president following the insurrection.

State GOP convention in Texas reignites COVID debate

Steve Pearce SANTA FE – New Mexico Republicans’ decision to hold a three-day soiree this week in neighboring Texas – instead of New Mexico – has reignited a debate over political activities during the pandemic. State GOP Chairman Steve Pearce said simmering frustrations over COVID-19 restrictions in New Mexico were not the reason Republicans chose to hold the event, dubbed Operation Freedom, in Amarillo. “We can be angry about it, but it was a very pragmatic decision,” Pearce said in a recent interview. “We would have loved to have this in New Mexico because it’s a big economic shot.” ...................... Specifically, he said Republicans’ previous attempts to bring GOP elected officials from other states to New Mexico to headline political events were unsuccessful due to what he described as a state “shutdown.”
