Everyone has an association with
Romeo and Juliet. For some, it’s middle school English classes, for others, Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes in Baz Luhrmann s 1996 movie. But, Simon Godwin’s
Romeo and Juliet, a film adaptation created entirely during the pandemic, is an iteration made for the current moment.
The show was set to be performed at London’s National Theatre as part of its normal season, but after the theater shutdown, the play was reimagined as a film for PBS s Great Performances series. It was shot over 17 days in both the performance and backstage spaces of the National’s Lyttelton Theatre. The end result is a distinctly dramatic, confined, and, well, horny version of Shakespeare’s classic. In March of last year, Classic Stage Company announced that its revival of the Stephen Sondheim musical âAssassinsâ was postponed. âThe production was to begin performances on April 2,â the email said. âC.S.C. intends to resume rehearsals and present âAssassinsâ in the coming months.â
Fast forward 13 months, and the company is indeed presenting âAssassins,â or at least a stopgap event until the director, John Doyle, can fully proceed. Still, fans will enjoy âTell the Story: Celebrating Stephen Sondheim and John Weidmanâs âAssassins,â
