Called the bauer reof Jewish Education or the Central Agency for Jewish Education. Jewish learning works used to be called the bureau of Jewish Education and it was called jaw wish education center. We changed our name about rate years ago. The purpose is to promoted, to advance jewish learning in the community. That is what it has always been. As schools began to develop in the mid 20th century in the San Francisco bay area, the bureaus main strategy was to support the schools and make education better. The wayway did was by supporting the schools and providing training, professional development for educators, and we still do that. Education is much broader, not only in schools. We support formal education and parents striving to bring jewish learning into their families and we support a library. It is based in a historical context, real but the idea of a little girl becoming an advisor to the sultan is completely made up. How did you come to keeper of the scale . I really had a diet buddy. We used to meet at a store similar to the book scene. We ended up talking about anything and everything but not dieting. We gave up on the dieting. One day i was in the store with her and i looked around i thought i have this crazy idea for a book. And from there just took on a life of its own. As circumstances had it, i had been doing an article for a mag on a local jewish author and he put me in touch with his and i drch i hadnt written one gourd. I got some sample chapters and got it to them. Over the course of really five years, this editor back and forth read my entire book. So that sort of kept my going, actually. Wonderful motivation. Has all sorts of different programs that encourage people to read, to enjoy the imagination of writing and the relationship between reader and a book and a writer. What how do you see this issue a world of ever deepening technology . Thats a good question. You know, your first words sort of touched me. Theres a book that came out last year by the israeli novelist called jews in words and they have a memorable sentence about jews that ours is not a bloodline, but a text line, and they sort of locate at the center of the jewish experience the passing on of the word of text. And so we see ourselves at the library very much in that tradition, and i see basically that encounter whether its through a written book or whether online or through an e book, what were doing fundamentally is interacting with text very much in that tradition within judaism of reading the torah.
