16 journalists and media workers lost their lives in the Asia Pacific region in 2022, the second highest rate of killings globally, the International Federation of Journalists’ (IFJ) annual Killed List has found. The IFJ strongly condemns the ongoing violence and danger faced by media workers in the region and calls for increased action to end impunity for crimes against journalists.
Radio broadcaster Federico ‘Ding’ Gempesaw was shot and killed in broad daylight in front of his home in Carmen, Cagayan de Oro City, Mindanao on June 29. The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) and its affiliate, the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP), condemn the murder and urge the local authorities immediately bring the perpetrators to justice.
The inaugural speech did not touch on the problem, but President Marcos is inheriting the impunity that has characterized deadly attacks on media workers in the country.
