at the rig site wednesday. federal officials now estimate 5,000 barrels of oil a day are spilling into the gulf. today winds in the gulf are expected to push the 100 mile long oil slick closer to the coast. a test burn to try to slow the spill was successful and today crews are expected to try to burn off more of the oil. don teague reports. reporter: when the burns began, crews will target the thickest area of oil, corralled with fire resistant boom into floating pools at least two millimeters thick, then towed away from the rest of the slick and set on fire for an hour. what s left will be hardened tar balls which can be easily scooped up with a net. i don t think you re going to stop this oil from reaching land. the question is where, how much, and what s the impact. reporter: the deepwater horizon tragedy has reignited the debate over offshore drilling. in the gulf alone, there are more than 3500 oil and gas platforms with about 35,000 offshore workers. they produce
