Mackenzie Alston, Ph.D. (Department of Economics) was selected for a post-doctoral fellowship from the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) to support diversity in economics. The one-year fellowship is open to early-career economists from historically underrepresented demographics within the economics profession and to researchers studying diversity issues. Alex Meyer, Ph.D. (Department of Psychology) received an award for Distinguished Early Career Contribution to Psychophysiology from the Society for Psychophysiological Research.

Thrasher wanted to see a widespread campus effort to put the university’s strategic goals into action. Individuals across the university answered the call, and the result has been an unprecedented run of success for FSU. “The strategic plan provided us with a roadmap to becoming one of the very best public universities in the country while staying true to our core values of student success and academic excellence,” Thrasher said. “We’ve come this far because we know where we are going, and the benchmarks we have put in place ensure that we stay on course.”

FSU alumnus to appear on ABC’s Shark Tank Ella Hechlik On Feb. 5, Florida State University graduate student Michael Benarde will appear on ABC’s Shark Tank to pitch his product NightCap, a drink spiking prevention cup cover designed to look like a scrunchie. The idea for NightCap came to Benarde’s sister Shirah in a dream, and she immediately began working on a prototype. When Bernarde returned home from college for the summer, they began working together on turning the prototype into something real. That was over a year and a half ago. Now, NightCap has sold over 10,000 units and has close to 120,000 followers on the social media platform Tik Tok.

Michael Benarde is the winner of the Jim Moran College of Entrepreneurship’s 2020 InNOLEvation Challenge Business Model Competition. A native of West Palm Beach, Benarde graduated last year from Florida State University with his bachelor’s degree in political science, and he is currently enrolled in FSU’s MBA program in the College of Business.

Florida State University’s Jim Moran College of Entrepreneurship is launching a new online major in the Master of Science program this fall to prepare students to help companies meet the demands of today but not at the expense of tomorrow. The Master of Science in Entrepreneurship, Social and Sustainable Enterprises will offer graduates an opportunity to learn sustainable practices and good corporate governance, according to Mark McNees, faculty adviser to the program and social entrepreneur in residence at the college.
