In a final step toward correcting problems which led to rolling blackouts last winter, the Railroad Commission set weatherization rules for natural gas suppliers.

Texas’s top oil and natural gas regulator adopted a new set of weatherization rules more than a year and a half after a deadly winter storm hit the state and left millions without power for days and left more than 200 people dead.

The new Weather Emergency Preparedness Standards rule implements provisions in Senate Bill 3, which was passed by the Texas Legislature and signed by Governor Abbott in 2021.

Critics are skeptical about whether the new rules by the Railroad Commission will prevent another catastrophe like the power grid disaster in February 2021.

The commission voted unanimously to approve the regulations over objections from some critics who say the rules are too lax.
