The 42nd Brigade has Strykers: at least a battalion’s worth. It’s worth asking why it doesn’t have more.

It’s apparent the Frankenstein’s monster of a combat vehicle is even less than the sum of its crude components.

A recent video posted by Ukraine’s military shows an MT-LB armored tractor of Ukraine’s 67th Mechanized Brigade with an old 85-millimeter D44 gun on top.

Enterprising Ukrainian technicians even have fitted the old D-44 gun to 1970s-vintage MT-LB armored tractors to produce a new kind of tank-destroyer. An MT-LB-44.

The MT-LB-A-22 is a fire-support vehicle. The A-22 launcher, which also arms Russian navy amphibious vessels, can fire unguided rockets out to a distance of five miles or so.

The two weapons—a UB32 rocket pod borrowed from a helicopter and a 2B9 automatic mortar—have no business being on the same vehicle.

At least three times, Russian forces around Marinka in eastern Ukraine have packed old armored vehicles with explosives and sent them rolling toward Ukrainian positions.
