stay. at this point firefighters still don't know the cause of the fire. live in heyward, amy holleyfield, abc 7 news. this morning san francisco police are investigating two more pedestrian accidents. the first happened around 9:00 last night at follow some and fifth street. this shows the force of the impact. an officer tells us the pedestrian suffered serious but nonlife threatening injuries. a few minutes later another pedestrian was hit by a car. that person was taken to the hospital. no word yet on their condition. the accidents came less than 12 hours after city leaders announced san francisco will spend $17 million on pedestrian safety including new sidewalk curbouts which extend into the street and traffic light timing changes at key intersections. happening this morning, a silicon valley area lawmaker will announce a measure to deter cyber bullying and sexual assault all blamed for a 15-year-old sara toga teen's suicide. jim bell is introducing audrey's law following the 2012 death of audrey pott. she took her own life after three boys shared explicit photos of her when she passed out and was sexually assaulted at a party where drinking was involved. the boys received short sentences between 30 and 45 days in juvenile detention. if they had been tried as adults, they would have spent ten years in prison. authorities may be closer to solving the murders of five women on the peninsula. cases that go back 40 years. the fbi launched a task force to investigate the murders in san mateo county. they suggest the gypsy hill killer killed michelle mitchell in 1979. a woman named kathy woods confessed to mitchell's murder. she was convicted and is serving a life sentence. a law enforcement force says even though dna evidence led to her conviction, they believe she had a male accomplice. detectives who worked on the cases are glad they're being re-examined. >> love it. it's going to be -- if anything's going to solve it, this will. >> members of the task force plan to canvass neighborhoods where the victims were last seen in 1976 and where their bodies were discovered. major change could be coming to your favorite grocery store. safe way is being absorbed by albert son's in a $9.4 billion deal. alan wong explains what it could mean for customers and employees. >> $35 right there. >> reporter: it got bob harvin one bag of groceries. now he's wondering if the $9.2 billion sale of safeway to the company that owns albertsons will lead to lower prices. robert edwards answered that question. >> after the two companies largest retail grocery chain in the u.s. the director of retail management says combining two grocery giants will phase out more middlemen. >> i think efficiency will drive the prices down and i hope stores will be owned by sirbrus, a new york based capital management firm and that concerns union management. >> they bought everything in 2006. they sold everything that wasn't nailed down and some stuff that was nailed down. >> reporter: and there were layoffs too. they say streamlining is inevitable. how it takes place will decide the fate of this new grocery store giant. in the east bay, alan wong, abc 7 news. a santa klara bingo hall is taking steps to stop a run of brazen lotteries. aqua made bingo has hired a security guard. last month a 78-year-old woman was hit on the head by a gun. overseas today, russia and crimea are taking steps to solidify ties as pro russian parties in crimea are planning for a referendum to split from ukraine. president obama spoke on the phone for an hour with russian president vladimir putin. he's demanding russian forces withdraw. the kremlin says putin told obama that russia is unable to ignore requests for protection from ukraine's russia leaning east and south. we'll have more on the situation in ukraine in a live report from washington at the top of the hour. in less than an hour the labor department will release the latest jobs report. analysts expect the unemployment rate to remain at 6.6% with employers adding 145,000 jobs last month. experts believe the nasty weather in the midwest and east coast froze much of the job market but analysts expect it will bounce back in the spring. salesforce.com operator is celebrating the fifth anniversary today by challenging fellow tech leaders to help fight poverty. the ""san francisco chronicle"" is announcing an initiative to raise $10 million to fund a new bay area antipoverty program. he says he's persuading 20 companies to donate $500,000 each is just a start. sales force will we'll check in with meteorologist mike nicco next. >> police in memphis tennessee are looking for a shooter in a shopping mall. the mall was quickly put on lockdown. four men were later detained. investigators say it appears the victim and suspect knew each other. officers say there was a verbal confrontation before the shooting. in massachusetts lawmakers are taking quick action to change the state's peeping tom law after the state supreme court ruled a man who took cell phone photos up women's skirts did not violate any state laws. yesterday lawmakers in both houses passed new legislation that says anyone who tries to photograph a person's sexual or intimate parts without their person consent would face a maximum penalty of more than two years in jail and a $5,000 fine. the day before the state's highest court ruled that photos were legal. they said the women were not nude or partially nude. that ruling was based strictly on the way the law was written. the surprise of a lifetime for a fresno area veteran finally has a purple heart for an injury he received during world war ii. reporter rick montana has the story. >> i am proud to present to you your purple heart medal. >> reporter: this moment a long time in the making. martin madellon final bely received his purple heart 69 years 2 months and 6 days after being shot by a german sniper on the french battlefield. >> it feels great. really amazing. i won't be around too much longer, i don't think, but my son will have it. and it's real great. >> madellon's vfw post secretly planned the ceremony after his friend and fellow veteran a. michael de cesar wrote down letters and it went nowhere. madellon served in the army for seven years in that time receiving several awards including the silver star medal, the second highest military decoration for valor. his battle injury came as he rescued 283 soldiers trapped by machine gunfire. even madellon's family had no idea this would be celebrated thursday. >> he'd always say, well, one of these days maybe before i die i'll get my medal he got today. and that's the only medal that he is missing. >> reporter: a special award for a soldier fortunate to have time to wear it proudly. rick, abc 7 news. it's 4:44. the oakland school district is trying to figure out how it will replace $35,000 worth of computers stolen from an elementary school. thieves broke into the computer lab at joaquin miller entry school thursday night. they stole 23 brand new imacs and computers. more was stolen than the computers. >> when you take things from the school like this, you're really taking the heart of our students' work and their effort and their love, but even more, you're taking their safety away from them. >> the pta recently bought the computers from the school. the district is looking for funds to replace the stolen computers. happening today san jose sharks foundation is teaming up with the community to build a new playground in one of the city's under served areas. this is a picture posted on facebook by the sharks foundation of the location of the new park. the design is based on children's drawings created at a special design event in january. more than 200 volunteers will take part in the final construction phase including four sharks players. raffi torres, matt nietto, and alex daylock. >> my playground was built by the sharks. >> good bragging rights. >> good day for the playgrounds. >> absolutely. warm temperatures. pushing the upper 60s in san jose. in the 70s tomorrow. let's take a look and show you what's going on with live doppler 7 hd. i've turned the satellite on to show you the high clouds are lurking to the west. they'll overrun the sky as we head throughout the day today. that won't stop the warm weather from coming in. it will dim the sunshine a tad bit. let's talk about winds. there's a good indication that high pressure is taking over. it's calm in nevada. hayward, mountain view and also san jose. temperatures when you're stepping out right now up in the north bay we're at 48 in bow dega bay. take it to about 50 in san rafael. that's where it's coolest in the east bay valleys. mid to upper 40s. lafayette, 47. 46 in coop perfect tina. san jose up to the bay 50 to 52 degrees. now what's going to happen today? robbery detectives and special operations unit looked at the pattern of crimes and stakeout several stores as likely targets. >> the suspects seem to be wrapping up their level of violence and we know that robberies of the type will continue to ramp up. >> the strategy paid off. two suspects showed up by one of the stores and then ward off as police swarmed in. the men jumped out and ran, one man was caught quickly. the other suspect kept running through the neighborhood and onto interstate 280 followed by officers and the sheriff's department á one helicopter. >> two of our robbery detectives picked up on this, and started listening on the radio and actually flanked the fleeing suspects. >> taken into custody were angel rodriguez leon and jesus beltran escobar. >> it took a lot of moving parts to come together and have a successful conclusion to this operation. >> the suspects are being held in the santa clara county jail. detectives say they're still looking for possible suspects witnesses, and victims. bay area police hope someone can provide the evidence needed to solve the cold case killings of six bay area women. the gypsy hill murders as they were known gripped the bay area back in 1976. five of the women were stabbed to death in san mateo county between january and april of that year. ktvu has learned that a man's dna linked comiclinked to the murder of it another murders student was recently tied to the murders as well. >> we ask that all members of the public take a moment to think back and reflect on your memories of that time in 1976 and if anything comes to mind please notify us. >> members of the newly formed task force will canvass neighborhoods where the victims were last seen. investigators say they believe the same person is responsible. the highway patrol is looking into whether speed was a factor in a crash that killed a teenage driver today. investigators say 17-year-old boy from danville was headed east through the pleasant hill road offbrand mac ramp when his car went off the highway and hit a tree about 11:00 a.m. witnesses told the chp that the driver was speeding before the crash. so far his name has not been released. continuing coverage now, the deal that is making huge waves in the bay area. safeway agreed to be sold for $9 billion. the company buying safeway, already owns supermarket chains including albertsons. safeway is the seventh largest bay area employer. >> safeway, a bay area staple for decades. >> it's convenient. >> today safeway announced it agreed to sell to cerberus capital management, private equity firm that owns albertsons. the price tag about $9 billion. the deal that could change that safeway see today. >> it seems like it's become a monopoly, and were not going to have as many choices as we had before if that happens. >> right now there are more than 1300 safeway stores across the country. if the merger goes through it will create a network of a more than 2400 stores, 25400 stores, 250,000 employees all under one company. >> seems like a game of musical chairs. every once in a while they will change hands. >> albertsons ceo said in a statement, together we will be able to respond to local needs more quickly and deliveroutstanding products at an lower price and more efficiently. robert edwards the president ceo safeway said, we look forward to working with bob miller and the rest of the albertsons team as we proceed to become an even stronger organization. >> i don't like albertsons or lackeys when i go in there. >> it doesn't bother me. >> safeway officials say other people on flight 93 new that there flight wasn't intended to land. >> mark bingham's life cut short by a terrorist on board from united flight 93's now being told on the silver screen. scott broughton says he met a friend of bingham's about a year after 9/11. that started a 12 year journey to bring his life story to everyone. >> it's about a mother, a son and what it takes to be a hero. and i think what audiences are coming away with is being inspired by this beautiful mother and son story. >> the filmmakers say while the events surrounding his death are part of bingham's life story, it's a small part of the unique character. the film traces bingham story starting with his close relationship with his mother. alice hoagland has seen the film and says it is emotional for her every time. >> it is hard for me to watch some parts. i learned a lot about my son. i didn't know he smoked for example. >> rather than rather than focus on his death the filmmakers focused on his life growing up, attending uc berkeley, coming out as a gay man, playing rugby and combating stereotypes mac types about what it means to be gay. >> it seems that in some ways he's been his whole life investigators say happened around 2:00 a.m. the thieves climbed a fence, broke a window and made off with about $35000 with the village electronics. the computer stolen were purchased with donated funds. the case of a 16-year-old boy accused in a fiery attack of teenagers headed to trial. richard thomas said 18-year-old sasha fleischman skirt on fire while the two were riding a bus last november. the incident was caught on bus surveillance video which might have been made public during a preliminary hearing. this morning thomas waived his right to that hearing. thomas who pleaded not guilty is being tried as an adult. the san francisco sheriff's department has issued an alert for a one legged man in a wheelchair. they say he has assaulted at least five women near san francisco general hospital. women have reported that he punched or grope them and took off using his remaining leg to propel himself. he's described as 40-50 years old half the mic african- american with his right leg partially amputated. the city of san jose says it's prepared to go to the supreme court to bring major league baseball to the south bay. alcide attorneys for thecity of filed a petition with the knife circuit court of appeals to overturn major league baseball's exemption from antitrust laws. that exemption was the basis of an earlier court appeal that the city lost. oakland a's owner wants to bring the team to san jose, but major league baseball is bonking since the san francisco giants claimed territorial rights to the south bay. >> the people in san jose deserve a baseball team and what one. they have a contract with the a's for them to move there. and someone says, that contract is illegal. >> major league baseball has until april 4 to respond to the appellate court filing. kits yet to be processed. nancy o'malley helped can convince president obama of the $35 million in his proposed budget to beef up police evidence labs. across the country there are 400,000 unprocessed rape kits, 1900 and alameda county. a malleus is processing them provides critical dna evidence that can help speed up the prosecution of rapists and clearing man unjustly accused of rape. $17 million was fired last october when the charter school learned of alleged abuse and took that information to police. yet quinto was considered a rehire when he started teaching again for west contra costa in january. that's why the school board president said quinto's background check did not include a call to his former school. >> we had a resume already a body of work on what he had done, good lot of complaints from both customers and workers. johnson likes convenience and low costs. >> i like the deals that i get from safeway. you know you come and you know if you're a club member you get the coupon deals and you know you get a better bank for your buck. >> reporter: safeway operates 1,345 stores in 20 states. that would greatly add to albertson's 1,074 stores in 21 states. the merger would result in a wider range of items, lower prices, wider range products. >> it was detrimental to our stores. we don't want to see that repeated at safeway. >> reporter: now there's questions of what to do with its rewards program. >> they keep the program here for us is good. >> they're facing a lot of pressure from atypical competitors target, wal-mart. these are broad retailers who weren't always in the grocery business but now are. >> reporter: jennifer chatman says merging the grocery chains will be a challenge but the two companies share history which could help. >> reporter: joe albertson worked for safeway for 12 years before he became an entrepreneur and opened his own grocery store in idaho. >> hopefully safeway can just upgrade it and be a little more organic and a little more refined without the prices going up. >> reporter: one thing that is really interesting is this merger deal does have a one day window when safeway can shop around. and essentially entertain and be discussed by police and players. in santa clara, patti lee, ktvu news. new developments tonight in a series of incidents involving water bottles thrown at vehicles. the highway patrol says two teenage boys are the prime suspects. the incident happened last month in an around santa rosa injurying 20 people. as many as 20 vehicles were hit. it identified the boys by finding the owner of the truck but no one is believed to be involved is cooperating with investigators. berkeley police released the identity today of the city's first homicide victim of the year. and they announced a reward in the case. officers found the body of 54- year-old silvan busselaire. police were called to check on him after he had not been seen in several days. investigators are not saying how the man died and are hoping a $15,000 reward will help generate new information in the case. students and staff in a school in oakland are heartbroken after thieves made out with thousands of dollars worth of computers. it happened at joaquin miller elementary school. when students showed up they found out their computer lab had been broken into overnight. the thieves climbed over fence, broke a window and made off with $30,000 worth of computers. >> it's a shame that people feel like they have no right to come into a school and rob children of their technology, or anything of that supports their education. >> reporter: three years ago volunteers helped raise money to buy the 25imax and much of the student's school work was on those computers. oakland mayor gene quan delivered her third state of the city address. it was a packed room to hear the mayor speak. she turned to oakland's number one topic, public safety. she praised members of recent academies. >> most are of color, mostly all of them speak a second language. and we've had the largest graduation of females in the class, it's 19% now. >> things are in her opinion getting better and she says oakland is doing its best to improve and emotionally after a brain injury. the whole family is devastated emotionally. >> reporter: lu's parents tell me they don't want another family to go through what they've been experiencing. live in in a presentation of recommendations in the walk first. pedestrian safety must be a top priority. >> here to date we've had more people killed on the streets of san francisco in vehicle collisions than we have been homicide. it is a problem. >> so far this year five pedestrians have been killed in san francisco. safety plans call for $17 million to be spent to improve 170 locations around the city. sunny vale's ban on large capacity magazines went on sale but a large ditch effort to stop it. the voter approved ban prohibits the procession of magazines that hold more than 10 rounds. the new ordnance also requires owners to lock up firearms at home and report guns that are lost and stolen within two days. ktvu's news has learned why the fbi is taking a fresh look at the killings of six women back in the 1970s. today the fbi announced a joint task force with other law enforcement agencies from san mateo county. they'll be looking into the so called gypsy murders. the sixth victim was a woman who was killed in reno. one woman was convicted in that case and now a re-examination of the evidence has turned up something new. kt ktvu has learned it involves dna belonging to a man. all shows a gunman terrorizing a liquor store. but today two men are in custody. the robbers targeted nearly two dozen other businesses. ktvu's robert handa outlines the operation that led police to the suspects. >> reporter: police dubbed the robbers the can't stop won't stop robbers. who terrorized the city until they were caught last week. investigators looked at the pattern of crimes. >> robberies of this type will continue to ramp up. >> reporter: the strategy paid off. two suspects showed up at one of the stores and then warred off as police showed up. one man was caught quickly. >> it's a dead end. it's a dead end. >> reporter: the other man kept running. with police officers in chase as well as a chopper. >> he's crossing southbound lanes now on the run. >> two of our robbery detectives picked up on this. and started listening on the radio and actually caught the fleeing suspect. >> reporter: taken into custody escobar and rodriguez-leon. detectives say they are still looking for more possible suspects, witnesses and even victims. in san jose, robert handa, ktvu channel 2 news. a san diego woman is recovering tonight after being rescued from monterey bay after spending 15 hours on a partially deflated rubber raft. she said she had problems with her raft and strong winds pushed her out into the bay. she was stranded for 15 hours until a crew rescued her. >> from the look at her skin she still had some red on her so she must have been swimming. >> reporter: the woman says she set off flairs but the problem is no one saw her in the heavy fog. the girl scouts and barbie are sticking together at least for now. the girl scouts rejected calls from two advocacy groups to cut ties with the doll. the advocacy group says the business partnership with barbie celebrates what they call a flawed role model for girls. however a spokeswoman for the scouts says the partnership is meant to teach young girls to inspiring young women in a fun way. after the leaking at the -- bridge. water can be seeping in through tiny cracks in the caulking near the steel traffic barriers. officials say they need to determine exactly where the water is coming from sensitive equipment. it left san francisco bay today where it had been tied up at treasure island. the barge made its way about 80 miles through the delta to stockton. regulators said it had to move because it didn't have the proper permits. google says it will serve as an interactive technology center when it's completed. a 17-year-old boy died today after a single car accident in the east bay. it happened just after 11:00 this morning on eastbound highway 24 near the pleasant hill road exit in lafayette. according to the highway patrol, witnesses say that the car hit speeds of 90 to 100 miles per hour before it went off the highway and hit a tree. the driver was from danville and was the only person in the car at this point his name has not been released. the two men have pleaded guilty to beating giant fan bryan stow nearly killing him are facing new charges. norwood and sanchez have been sentenced for being felons with weapons. it's a story we first brought you last night at sanctions against russian officials that he believes are responsible for the military actions in ukraine. and russia suggested it may retaliate against americans. >> reporter: staples says it is closing 225 stores around the country by the end of the year. that's about 10% of all of its stores worldwide. staples says it wants to cut costs and about half of their sales they say are generated online. stock markets were mixed today. the dow gained 61 points mostly on a positive jobs report. however the nasdaq was off five. desperate for a date. a teacher in san ramon valley high school is and trying to solicit sex. >> it's pretty scary. >> reporter: police did not find the man but they did not stop looking. authorities walked two weeks down to this surveillance store cameras caught him on video. >> it's a whole different way of chasing down and catching bad guys. they chaired the store with thousands of their subscribers. >> what they're getting they're getting more information. two teenage girls saw the video and spoke up. >> they told the officials at the school they go to. the school reported it to us. >> reporter: the men identified the men as roberto guadalupe. after word got out that police were looking for him, the 41- year-old turned himself in. >> everybody is always on their phone. twitter, instagram, facebook are very popular. that's good to get out to people like that. >> reporter: police say this case would have been a lot harder to solve 15 years ago. reporting in san mateo, cristina rendon. radio talk show host donald lacy jr. was recognized. since the killing of his daughter in 1997 lady has been working with youth in the community to stop the violence. >> i hope everybody in the community comes together. because only all of us working together can san francisco. a live look at northbound 280 in san jose it's okay. at 4:30 let's go back to et desk. we begin this morning with breaking news in the south bay. crews are battling a house fire in san jose where two people we understand were burned. ktvu janine de la vega is live at the scene with what is happening right now. janine. >> reporter: we are in east san jose. they have knocked down this fire. it is in this back of this house. we do know that two people were inside the house and they suffered bad burns. to get more information on what is happening right now and how this all started, we go to captain reggie williams with the san jose fire department. when you got here the flames were really raging. >> yeah what we have is an exterior fire. firefighters had a difficult time accessing the structure. if you look at the building it had security bars throughout. we had to use our rescue bars to remove the people. we did have two residents that were badly burned and take tonight local burn center. we have knocked down the fire. we have searched the property. there is no one else inside the building. we will be heading into the mop up phase. again we don't know what caused this fire. the cause is still under investigation. we should have our arson investigator in route. >> reporter: and it was actually another stricture that was be-- structure that was behind the house. >> yeah the first reports stated it might have been an attached structure. but again we don't know exactly what it is. when we got here we saw 20-30- foot flames above the roof line of the house. again if you look at it, there are security bars even on the edge that lead down the side. >> reporter: thank you so much reggie williams. dramatic its cape from another fire in hayward as several people jumped from a second story window. alex savidge is live with how a small child made it out. >> reporter: a child was thrown from one of the second story bedroom windows here at this apartment that caught fire late last night. he was thrown down to a neighbor who was waiting on the ground and caught that child. i was told it was a little boy. he was not hurt. the adults trapped in that burning apartment were injured trying to make their escape through that window. a man and woman were put on the stretchers and taken to the hospital. firefighters say they were hurt as they jumped through a bedroom that was 25 feet off the ground. this fire started just before 11:00 last night. inside one of the second floor units at this apartment building on seventh street near c-street. caught by the neighbor was taken to the -- a neighbor that went downstairs described the chaotic scene. >> i ended up with a baby and the black smoke started coming out the front window. it was really bad. >> reporter: the unit that caught fire here was heavily damaged. the three other units in this building had smoke and water damage as well. everyone who lives in this building has been forced to find a new place to stay. this fire appears to have started in the kitchen. at least it does not appear to be suspicious. alex savidge chest ktvu alex savidge ktvu channel 2 news. the junior high school student was killed by a freight train that was passing through martinez last sunday evening. the eighth grader ran back on to the tracks to pick up her cell phone she had dropped. this morning's funeral begins at 10:30. also happening today there is a news conference at saratoga high school to unvail audrey's law. a bill aimed at cracking down on cyber bullying. it's named after audrey pot who committed suicide in 2012 a week after pictures were taken of here passed out and naked at a party. time is 4:35. there is concern and confusion over the announcement that the owner of albertson's is buying safeway. we are told the safeway name won't be going away and the popular rewards program will remain for now. although there are no plans to close stores, business expert tells ktvu she expects layoffs to eliminate duplicating jobs. >> it was debt mental to our membership in terms of layoffs and reductions and health of welfare. we don't want to see that repeated at safeway. >> albertson says the $9 billion deal will lead to a wide arrange of items for shoppers and safer products. they would combine for 2400 stores making it the second largest chain behind krogers. now to the california drought. the alameda county water district is considering enforcing one of the toughest restrictions in the bay area to date. the board may declare an emergency water shortage next thursday. restrictions would include limiting irrigation and banning homes and businesses from watering lawns on consecutive days. violations could lead to fines, possibly jail time. but that would be in the most extreme cases. jean quan says her city is heading in the right direction. last night she delivered her third state of the city address. topics including keeping the city's three sports teams, falling unemployment, and decline in violent crime. the new class of police academy graduates will help lead the way in public safety. >> most of them are people of color. almost half of them speak a second language, and we've had the highest number of women in the history of graduates. 19%. that is above the national average right now. >> quan is also launching a new campaign to get more people to move to oakland in hopes to bring 10,000 new people to the downtown and uptown areas. this was seen as an important speech for quan. as it was for her last city of the city address. time is 4:38. dramatic surveillance video could be used as evidence for two men in an armed robbery. it shows them terrorizing a liquor store and shooting his weapon into the air. the two men hit about 20 stores and shops since december. investigators caught the suspects last week by examing crime patterns and staking out several targets. >> the suspects seem to be ramping up their level of violence. we know robberies of this type will continue to ramp up. >> surveillance camera on a sheriffs department helicopter photographed offices chasing down the suspects. they are still looking for more yesterday. san francisco's police chief says pedestrian safety must be a top priority this year. >> year to date, we've had more people killed on the street in san francisco than we have by homicide. it is a problem. >> so far this year five pedestrians have been killed in san francisco. safety plans call for $17 million to be spent to improve 170 locations around the city. police in berkeley are offering a $15,000 reward for anyone with information leading to the arrest of the person who killed a man inside of his apartment last week. the man's body was found inside of his home on addison street. few details about his death have been released. an investigation is still under way. anyone with information is asked to call the police department. we are learning more about an fbi investigation into a bay area cold case dating back to 1976. now ktvu first reported federal agents and local police were reopening an investigation into the unsolved murders of six women. the fbi now forming a joint task force to look into the so- called gypsy hill murders. one woman was convicted in that case. now wee have learned that dna belonging to a man links the six murders. the girl scouts and barbie are sticking together. at least for now. they rejected calls to cut ties with the doll companies. the girl scout's business partnership with barbie celebrates a flawed role model for the the pleasanton offices. that's the corporate offices. that's where most likely there could be lay offs to eliminate duplication. here at the stores i've been hearing a lot of complaints from both customers and workers. johnson likes convenience and low costs. >> i like the deals that i get from safeway. you know you come and you know if you're a club member you get the coupon deals and you know you get a better bank for your buck. >> reporter: safeway operates 1,345 stores in 20 states. that would greatly add to albertson's 1,074 stores in 21 states. the merger would result in a wider range of items, lower prices, wider range products. >> it was detrimental to our stores. we don't want to see that repeated at safeway. >> reporter: now there's questions of what to do with its rewards program. >> they keep the program here for us is good. >> they're facing a lot of pressure from atypical competitors target, wal-mart. these are broad retailers who weren't always in the grocery business but now are. >> reporter: jennifer chatman says merging the grocery chains will be a challenge but the two companies share history which could help. >> reporter: joe albertson worked for safeway for 12 years before he became an entrepreneur and opened his own grocery store in idaho. >> hopefully safeway can just upgrade it and be a little more organic and a little more refined without the prices going up. >> reporter: one thing that is really interesting is this merger deal does have a one day window when safeway can shop around. and essentially entertain and even go out and recruit other companies to provide alternate proposals so this is by far not a done deal until that window closes. reporting live in walnut creek. jana katsuyama. ktvu channel 2 news. more details now, safeway stock today was off more than 3% after hours. shares fell to $38.05 in heavy trading. safeway stock is up for the year 21%. safeway is one of the largest employers in the bay area but it's not number one. it ranks seventh from the san francisco center of economics. uc san francisco is second with 22,000. and safeway has about 13,000 workers. new at 10:00, a bingo game targeted by four robbers. tonight two people are in custody after an attack for her winnings. there's now a controversial idea being considered to hopefully keep players safe. >> it has a blue haired imagine, but and players. in santa clara, patti lee, ktvu news. new developments tonight in a series of incidents involving water bottles thrown at vehicles. the highway patrol says two teenage boys are the prime suspects. the incident happened last month in an around santa rosa injurying 20 people. as many as 20 vehicles were hit. it identified the boys by finding the owner of the truck but no one is believed to be involved is cooperating with investigators. berkeley police released the identity today of the city's first homicide victim of the year. and they announced a reward in the case. officers found the body of 54- year-old silvan busselaire. police were called to check on him after he had not been seen in several days. investigators are not saying how the man died and are hoping a $15,000 reward will help generate new information in the case. students and staff in a school in oakland are heartbroken after thieves made out with thousands of dollars worth of computers. it happened at joaquin miller elementary school. when students showed up they found out their computer lab had been broken into overnight. the thieves climbed over fence, broke a window and made off with $30,000 worth of computers. >> it's a shame that people feel like they have no right to come into a school and rob children of their technology, or anything of that supports their education. >> reporter: three years ago volunteers helped raise money to buy the 25imax and much of the student's school work was on those computers. oakland mayor gene quan delivered her third state of the city address. it was a packed room to hear the mayor speak. she turned to oakland's number one topic, public safety. she praised members of recent academies. >> most are of color, mostly all of them speak a second language. and we've had the largest graduation of females in the class, it's 19% now. >> things are in her opinion getting better and she says oakland is doing its best to improve public safety. new developments tonight in a home invasion robbery in which an elderly woman was tied up and her home ransacked. tonight we learned two men are now in custody. ktvu's debora villalon is live in dublin where she learned the unusual way police say they got in, debora. >> reporter: through a second story window. through a second story window on this house and possibly others too. using whatever is handy to climb up on the roof. avoid the cameras, avoid the alarm. new details straight from the police chief at a packed meeting tonight. >> we take this very, very serious. when someone ties up a poor person, that's serious. >> reporter: dublin residents squeeze into every city council. alarmed about burglary. reassurance came from their chief. two men now jailed, their residences are being searched. >> it surveillances, identified, have taken into custody and now we're doing simultaneous search warrants in two different cities. >> reporter: and the chief says the men in gloves and ski masks who came into this house sunday night were as surprised to see the elderly resident as she was them. she had gone to bed. they knocked and thought no one was home. >> san ramon. >> reporter: burglaries are up everywhere the chief says. and he credits home surveillance systems to help track thieves. many residents want more police officers. >> we made the call. again we can't put an officer up there full time because he could be on one street and an accident happen on another street. >> they're response time is going to be a lot slower. >> is it money? we need more money. >> reporter: officials say dublin force is keeping pace with population and residents need to be smarter. >> no one put alarm sensors on second story windows, because no one goes in through a second story window. i'm here to tell you, if you don't have sensors on your second story windows, put them on. >> reporter: the chief gave the talk twice so no one would be turned away. he pointed out in the last two robberies, doors and windows were left opened. being investigated for sexually abusing kids. so how did he get hired at a school. >> someone needs to do their job, period. >> reporter: two investigates the important step that was skipped during the hiring process. >> it's like a cab you can call with an app but are ride sharing services held up to the same standards? they are a growing alternative to cabs. private cars you call using a smart phone app. right now the california public utilities commission oversees the industry but so far only one relatively known company meets regulatory requires that were issued several months ago. amber lee is live and finds out why better known competitors are still able to operate without a permit. >> reporter: the first company to receive that permit is summon. the founder tells me he got this permit after complying with all 28 requirements. summon formerly known as instand cab has been operating for only a year but the owner tells us it's already in five cities. >> you can choose a taxi. you can choose a personal driver. >> reporter: customers use this app and have an option to order a cab or private car or whichever is closer. customers will know how much the ride will cost ahead of time. >> when demand goes up our prices don't go up. we have flat pricing. pricing that doesn't even change with pricing. >> reporter: he applied with the permit as soon as the cpu came up with its requirements back in december. the company and driver must have insurance. and all vehicles must undergo safety inspections. >> paying attention to what the intention behind the regulations were. not just what the letter of the law was was the key behind getting the permit quickly. >> reporter: it has agreements with other companys to operate while their applications are pending. tomorrow one will be sent to uber. letting these companies now they have 60 days to meet these requirements. >> more and more vehicles on the street so they can make more money. >> reporter: at city hall this afternoon there was a hearing to address safety concerns at the ride sharing industry boom. supervisor eric mar tells me he called for this hearing following the death of sofia lu. her family filed a lawsuit against uber after a driver struck and killed the girl on new year's eve. >> the mother is still suffering from the effects of the injury both physically and emotionally after a brain injury. the whole family is devastated emotionally. >> reporter: lu's parents tell me they don't want another family to go through what they've been experiencing. live in san francisco, amber lee, ktvu channel 2 news. also in san francisco, city officials are ready to spend millions of the dollars to make it safer for people who walk in the city. that news came today in a presentation of recommendations in the walk first. pedestrian safety must be a top priority. >> here to date we've had more people killed on the streets of san francisco in vehicle collisions than we have been homicide. it is a problem. >> so far this year five pedestrians have been killed in san francisco. safety plans call for $17 million to be spent to improve 170 locations around the city. sunny vale's ban on large capacity magazines went on sale but a large ditch effort to stop it. the voter approved ban prohibits the procession of magazines that hold more than 10 rounds. the new ordnance also requires owners to lock up firearms at home and report guns that are lost and stolen within two days. ktvu's news has learned why the fbi is taking a fresh look at the killings of six women back in the 1970s. today the fbi announced a joint task force with other law enforcement agencies from san mateo county. they'll be looking into the so called gypsy murders. the sixth victim was a woman who was killed in reno. one woman was convicted in that case and now a re-examination of the evidence has turned up something new. kt ktvu has learned it involves dna belonging to a man. all six cases are linked. >> forensic evidence, the timing of it all. again the profile of these victims, they all match. >> investigators are hoping someone will western span of the bay bridge as the light show known as the bay lights marked its first anniversary. organizers said the 25,000 lights went dark for 10 minutes to give viewers a chance to reflect on the impact that the piece of public art has had on san francisco. original plans call for the lights to continue their mesmerizing abstract pattern until next year. but now there's a push to raise $25,000 to keep those lights running till 2026. the reason why a man is asking will ferrell to the prom. and more than a dozen businesses terrorized. the calculated effort by police that led to two arrests. the boy scouts and barbie sticking to -- sticking together. the reason why the girl scouts are being asked to cut ties with the popular doll. this surveillance video is dramatic. it shows a >> reporter: police dubbed the robbers the can't stop won't stop robbers. who terrorized the city until they were caught last week. investigators looked at the pattern of crimes. >> robberies of this type will continue to ramp up. >> reporter: the strategy paid off. two suspects showed up at one of the stores and then warred off as police showed up. one man was caught quickly. >> it's a dead end. it's a dead end. >> reporter: the other man kept running. with police officers in chase as well as a chopper. >> he's crossing southbound lanes now on the run. >> two of our robbery detectives picked up on this. and started listening on the radio and actually caught the fleeing suspect. >> reporter: taken into custody escobar and rodriguez-leon. detectives say they are still looking for more possible suspects, witnesses and even victims. in san jose, robert handa, ktvu channel 2 news. a san diego woman is recovering tonight after being rescued from monterey bay after spending 15 hours on a partially deflated rubber raft. she said she had problems with her raft and strong winds pushed her out into the bay. she was stranded for 15 hours until a crew rescued her. >> from the look at her skin she still had some red on her so she must have been swimming. >> reporter: the woman says she set off flairs but the problem is no one saw her in the heavy fog. the girl scouts and barbie are sticking together at least for now. the girl scouts rejected calls from two advocacy groups to cut ties with the doll. the advocacy group says the business partnership with barbie celebrates what they call a flawed role model for girls. however a spokeswoman for the scouts says the partnership is meant to teach young girls to inspiring young women in a fun way. after the break, dozens of reservists returning home after being overseas. why school leaders say a typical part of their hiring process was skipped. you last month about the 900 places engineers found water leaking at the -- bridge. water can be seeping in through tiny cracks in the caulking near the steel traffic barriers. officials say they need to determine exactly where the water is coming from before they can stop the leaks. and bridge officials say dehumidifiers can help guard against those leaks and help keep the bridge safe. there are five dehumidifiers. the machines protect water sensitive equipment. it left san francisco bay today where it had been tied up at treasure island. the barge made its way about 80 miles through the delta to stockton. regulators said it had to move because it didn't have the proper permits. google says it will serve as an interactive technology center when it's completed. a 17-year-old boy died today after a single car accident in the east bay. it happened just after 11:00 this morning on eastbound highway 24 near the pleasant hill road exit in lafayette. according to the highway patrol, witnesses say that the car hit speeds of 90 to 100 miles per hour before it went off the highway and hit a tree. the driver was from danville and was the only person in the car at this point his name has not been released. the two men have pleaded guilty to beating giant fan bryan stow nearly killing him are facing new charges. norwood and sanchez have been sentenced for being felons with weapons. it's a story we first brought you last night at 5:00. eric rasmussen has learned the teacher was preparing for another overnight trip with students when he was arrested. >> reporter: parents at mira vista school in richmond are still trying to understand how a teacher could be hired while under investigation for sexually abusing kids. >> somebody dropped the ball and i think it was mira vista. i mean, somebody needs to do their job, period. >> reporter: police say that he abused several students while on excursions. yesterday plain clothed officers arrested gunto at his new job. >> something that wasn't disclosed was that in two or three weeks he was going to take a group of kids on a field trip overnight to yosemite. >> reporter: through multiple sources, 2 investigates compile guinto's teaching time. started as a substitute teacher from 2008 to 2011. he was hired at making waves and was fired. but he was considered a retire when he started working for -- that's why a background she is interviewed the couple that escaped here at the hospital and something that was told to her at the hospital prompted her to believe that some sort of crime may have occurred here and this may have been suspicious. here is cell phone video from a neighbor taken at about 3:45 this morning when the fire started. you can see the flames and smoke shooting from the roof of this home on aetna way off of mclaughlin avenue. firefighters say the fire appeared to have started in the back of the home in a back patio area. that back patio over hang collapsed. windows started breaking and then it spread to the house. a man and a woman were inside the home at the time. they escaped from the garage. there was security bars on all of the windows of the home and firefighters think that the bars delayed their escape. >> there was quite a bit of smoke when we arrived here. so the victims may have been disoriented. >> reporter: these two people were told are badly burned. we're told their burns are critical. again they are being treated at the hospital. again the arson investigator spoke with them. we are not sure what was said but it has led the investigator to believe that a crime may have occurred here. that arson is a possibility. firefighters have been in the back of the house mopping up. looking out for hot spots. the fire investigator has been combing through debris. back out here live we did see a couple police cars roll up and the investigator talked to those police officers. whatever happened in that conversation while i was talking during my live shot the police officer came over to the photographer and told him that now they have to move us back even farther. we are not sure why because we have been at fires numerous times and we now are getting pushed back. again we are assuming this has to do where this is now a crime scene. reporting live from san jose janine de la vega ktvu channel 2 news. we are also following developing news from hayward. two huge fires just a short distance apart. fire created these huge flames. you can see this from blocks away. the latest fire started on seventh street about an hour ago in a carport. fire investigators say nine cars were damaged or destroyed. but there are no reports of any injuries. ktvu alex savidge is on the scene. he is talking to witnesses and investigators. alex will have a live update in our next half hour. the carport fire is right near a fire that started around 11:00 last night. it started at an apartment on seventh and c streets. firefighters say a three-year- old child was thrown to safety from a second story window and was caught by a neighbor down on the ground. alex savidge just talked to that little boy about that daring escape. >> reporter: you jumped? was it scary? >> three adults also jumped to safety. there were no serious injuries. the red cross now is helping provide shelter. happening today cracking down on cyber bullying. a new law is in the works called audrey's law that is named after a saratoga high school student that committed suicide. tara moriarty is joining us now from the school with what this new law would do. >> reporter: i did want to mention what teens were charged with and what their punishment was. one of the teens that pled guilty in audrey's case he has now transferred to a high school in gilroy and sentenced to 45 days in juvenile hall. this is according to the mercury news. the other two boys are students here at saratoga high school. they were sentence the to 30 days in juvenile hall with time saved on weekends. a punishment -- the three admitted to photographing and sexually assaulting audrey pott in september of 2012 at a house party when she was passed out drunk. the photographs were shared via text and posted online. pott committed suicide one week later. it would make the crime easier to charge in adult court. it would also make cyber bullying a crime. a felony in some cases when photos or electronic messages are used to embarrass, harass, or intimidate others. after the attack she posted on her facebook page my life is ruined, i'm in hell, the whole school knows my life is over. audrey's law would require a two-thirds vote to pass. legal analysts say it has a good chance of passing at exactly 9:30 this morning. we are live in saratoga i'm tara moriarty. ktvu channel 2 news. jenna will be laid to rest later this morning. the high school student was killed by a freight train that was passing through martinez last sunday evening. she ran back on to the tracks to pick up her cell phone she had dropped. this morning's funeral begins at 10:30. this could be used as evidence against two men in a string of armed robbers. it shows a masked gunman terrorizing a liquor store. the two men hit 20 stores and shops since december. investigators captured the suspects last week by examing crime patterns and staked out several likely targets. >> the suspects seem to be ramping up in violence. and we know robberies like this will continue to ramp up. >> surveillance camera on a helicopter photographed the police chasing down the two suspects. angel rodriguez and jesus beltran are being held in the santa clara county jail. detectives say they are still looking for more possible suspects, witnesses, and victims. time 16:-- time is 6:09. two of the city council members voted no on the proposal. they say they are not comfortable with letting companies buy the name of city parks. group of senate democrats in sacramento calling for strict new rules to make it illegal for state legislation to allow property owners in the castro district to build inlaw units. they are the small apartments often built in the convert the garage, storage area or addicts. many people in san francisco have been living illegally in inlaw units. police in san mateo say social media and two brave kids helped them catch an accused child predator. the police posted an alert about a man soliciting a girl for sex on north claremont street. two 12-year-old girls saw the alert and the man's photo on facebook and identified the suspect as a roberto. >> when they recognized the individual from previous contact, they in turn told officials at the school they go to and the school reported it to us. >> he turned himself into police. he is now in the jail facing several charges. investigators say this case would have hard to solve years ago. a grand jury has indicted marvin norwood for possession of firearms. those weapons include assault style rifles and the new charges could add to their prison time. last month norwood and sanchez pled guilty to attack at dodgers stadium that almost killed stow nearly three years ago. a letter will be sent to the ride sharing company called uber saying it will have 60 days to get all the permits to stay in business. similar letters were sent to lift, side car and wings. at san francisco city hall there was a hearing about safety concerns as the ride sharing industry booms. safety requirements include checking the driver's criminal history and safety record. the company and driver must have insurance in all the vehicles and have to under go safety inspections. >> paying attention. not just what the letter of the law was. was the key behind getting the permit quickly. >> the cpuc released the first permit to san francisco based company summit. the founder got his permit after complying with all 28 guidelines. the state of colorado has become the latest state to draft new proposed legislation to regulate ride sharing services like uber and lift. the colorado measure would designate ride sharing companies as transportation networks. that is separate from taxi and limo services. let's check in with sal for a angeles metro station. now witnesses say the 47-year- old man was feeling around with his crane when he stumbled and fell off the edge of the platform. a train came by. however, he was able to lie down in a large gap between the tracks to avoid getting hit by the train. there was a lot of commotion inside the train when it passed over him. >> we are going to manually open the doors for you. i saw everyone running out of the train. it turns out someone was crushed underneath the train. >> the victim was pinned on the tracks for about 20 minutes. however he was rescued and again is expected fires break out just hours and feet from each other. the latest fire started about 90 minutes ago. ktvu alex savidge was covering an apartment house fire on seventh street when he smelled smoke from this carport fire. we just talked to a fire investigator at the scene. he says the flames caused a lot of damage to the carport. >> as you can see, there is nine vehicles either damaged or destroyed in this fire right here. along with the parking overhang. >> now there are no reports of injuries from this carport fire. as we mentioned, that carport fire is right near another fire in hayward. it started late last night. a child is among the people who barely escaped the fast moving flames. alex savidge is joining us live now with the details of what happened over there. good morning, alex. >> good morning, to you. frightening experience to say the least for this three-year- old little boy. he was thrown out of a second story window by one of his grandparents as this apartment here caught fire last night. and he was caught by his great aunt who was waiting on the ground. she caught him a very dramatic rescue here last night. let me show you video of this little guy. we shot it a short time ago. here he is in his uncle's arms. he just got from the hospital. his mom told us he was not hurt. he was sleeping here at his grandparents' apartment in hayward when the place caught fire just about 11:00. this apartment is on seventh street near c street. the only way for this family to get out was through the second story window. a 25-foot drop. >> what happened? >> i jumped out the window. >> reporter: you jumped? was it scary? >> reporter: his mom says yes, he was a little scared this morning. or last night i should say. the boy's grandmother and grandfather they were also injured when they jumped from that same second story window to escape the smoke and flames last night. they are still at the hospital. they have broken bones but they are expected to make a full recovery. as far as how this fire started it appears it started in the kitchen. firefighters say it does not appear to be suspicious. you can see this unit will be boarded up here. the family will have to find another place to stay. i asked that little boy this morning after everything he went through last night what he wants to do now all he said to me is i want to go home. live in hayward alex savidge ktvu channel 2 news. happening today a state senator plans to unvail new proposed legislation called audrey's law that would increase punishment for cyber bullies. tara moriarty is joining us from saratoga where some believe that current law is not tough enough. >> reporter: this according to the san jose mercury news. the other two boys are still students here at saratoga high school. they received 30 days each. so this new law would aim to make punishments harsher to deter such attacks in the future. the three boys admitted to taking half naked pictures and sexually assaulting 13-year-old classmate audrey pott in 2012 after she was passed out. the photos were shared via text. that week pott sent out a facebook message saying i'm in hell. my life is over. pott committed suicide one week later. students did investigating and found out ten people saw the photos. audrey's law would make the crime easier to charge in adult court with harsher penalties a and it would make cyber bullying a crime. now audrey's law would require a two-thirds vote to pass. and it has a pass. they will unvail audrey's law in exactly three hours. live from saratoga i'm tara moriarty ktvu channel 2 news. time is 6:36. four suspected armed robbers are in jail accused of terrorizing a bingo hall in santa clara. that bold crime happened wednesday night on martin avenue. the suspects pretended to be bingo players for several hours and suddenly pulled out guns and grabbed a huge amount of cash. witnesses say at one point they attacked a 78-year-old woman for her winning. the arrest have not made those bingo players feel any safer. >> there is too much money involved. they need for our protection as bingo players they should have armed security. >> police say the woman that was attacked in bingo -- in that bingo hall was pistol whipped. students and staff at a school in oakland are heartbroken. thieves made off with thousands of dollars worth of computers. it happened at joaquin miller elementary school later this week. thieves climbed over a fence and made off with $35,000 worthover computers. most of the students school work were on the computers. san francisco is considered one of the most walkable cities in the country but with the most recent rash of pedestrian injuries and deaths, city leaders are calling for more things to be done to keep walkers safe. ktvu brian flores has more. >> reporter: we are on vaness and bush. this one of the busier intersections in the city. you have walkers, drivers, and cyclists. they say simply enough is enough. during a press conference yesterday city officials announced it will spend $17 million in pedestrian safety projects in the city. it's called walk first which is a city initiative aimed at combining collision data with public outreach. it has identified 170 locations where improvements need to be made over the next five years. city officials say that a majority or about 60% have happened in the tenderloin and north beach neighborhoods. there were 21 pedestrian deaths last year. five this year. and city officials say this has to stop. >> each of the supervisors during the last foments have given me their personal accounts of their dangerous intersections. the people that were lost or severely injured and it is becoming personal. >> now some of the projects that will be improved upon for example call for traffic light timing changes along sunlighter street and the installation of a new traffic light at sunset boulevard where 78-year-old man was struck and killed in a crosswalk. he says he will be telling his officers not to be so nice when it comes to enforcements. the city has a goal of eliminating all traffic deaths by 2024. live in san francisco brian flores home and quickly spread. firefighters say the man and woman inside could not get out because of the steal bars on the windows. ktvu janine de la vega is at the home where investigators are now treating this as a crime scene. janine. >> reporter: in the past hour more police officers have shown up here to aetna way which is near mclaughlin avenue. they are being briefed by the arson investigator because this house fire has turned into a crime scene. they have not shared why but one of the questions that i have is, is everyone accounted for in the house? so far no one has been inside the home escaped through the garage. both are suffering from severe burns and rushed to the hospital. >> our arson unit is on scene. they will be investigating the size of this fire. they didn't give any specific reasons why it has become a crime scene. prior to coming this scene they did go over to the hospital and interview the two patients that were transported. so something must have changed from the time of the fire and the time they arrived at the scene. >> reporter: there are metal security bars on every window of the home. firefighters believe it may have prevented them from getting into the house quicker. there were release bars that could have been used but they were not used possibly because the victims could not see them besought smoke was so thick. at this time firefighters are investigators are mopping up and they are looking for any sort of evidence. we are being told that a spokesperson from the fire department will be arriving on the scene shortly. i talked to police as well since this is a fire scene. it is their investigation. so they weren't able to tell me any details as far as why this has turned into a crime investigation. but police said they will be here for awhile. reporting live from san jose janine de la vega choughs. time is 6:46. new information about the richmond schoolteacher accused of child sex abuse. on wednesday police arrested ron ginto when he was teaching. he started working there just months after being fired from the making waves academy charter school. ktvu news has learned, that that dismissile came as investigator were investigating charges that gintoed students and he was preparing for another over night trip with students when he was arrested. >> something that wasn't disclosed was that in two or three weeks, he was going to take a group of kids on a field trip over night to yosemite. >> the school board president is now promises to improve the school districts background checks in respond to the anger over this case. today the russian parliament voted to support any decision made by the people in the region of ukraine on becoming a part of russia. yesterday president obama spoke for about an hour with russian president vladimir putin. president obama said a referendum announced by pro russian authorities would violate international law. the referendum scheduled for march 16th would ask 20-30 minute drive time. on the peninsula highway 101 and 280 look very good. and we push over to the east bay. southbound 880 is a little sluggish. a few high clouds. a little cooler. it will be a beautiful day. low clouds. patchy fog around the san jose area. mostly sunny. not much change into saturday. don't forget spring forward on your clocks early sunday morning and inning clouds on federal agents and local police are reopening the investigation. the fbi is forming a joint task force to examine the so-called gypsy hill murders. five women were killed in san mateo county. a sixth victim was in reno. one woman was convicted in that case. now we've learned that dna belonging to a man connects the six murders. the task force will start canvassing neighborhoods in the peninsula we've had the highest number of women in the history of graduates. 19%. that is above the national average right now. >> mayor quan is also launching a new campaign to get more people to move to oakland in hopes to bring 10,000 new people to the downtown and uptown areas. now this was scene as an important speech for quan as it is her last state of the city address before the upcoming mayoral election. for the first time in a month there was a physical confrontation between a fan, coach, or player at a college basketball game. it happened again last night during this game between hawaii and santa barbara. the hawaii coach was arguing with the refs about a technical foul when the fan runs out of the stands up to the coach and started yelling at him. the hawaii players pushed the fan mateo coast. it will be a nice day today and nicer tomorrow. some of these higher clouds will head toward mendocino county and lake county. here is sal. >> all right. we do have traffic. that is going to be doing very well at the toll plaza. you may have heard of a crash earlier at the toll plaza. that has been taken care of. there is no problem on the bridge getting into san francisco. and by the way, there are no problems on 880. as we look at the commute here on 880, the traffic continues to look very nice. passing the coliseum in either direction that is northbound 880 on the right. coming through as you can see the traffic in the east bay is off to a good start. let's go back to the desk. we are following developing story from hayward. a large fire just broke out in a carport near the scene of another large overnight apartment fire. ktvu alex savidge was out covering that other fire when he smelled smoke and you saw flames from this fire. what is going on? >> reporter: here's the situation. this is an apartment building here where a fire broke out late last night. several people jumped from a window to escape. and a short time ago a new fire broke out here. basically on the backside of this apartment building. you can see the hayward fire department just arrived here. let's get to the video. huge flames pouring from what we are told is a carport at an apartment complex that is on the backside of the building. again it burned earlier in the evening. we saw a lot of neighbors they were running. ma of them went out and hopped in their cars and they were all moving their cars trying to get them out of the way here as this new fire broke out. again the fire department just got here a short time ago. in fact, we were the ones that were here. several news crews out here. we were the ones that called this fire in. the fire department just got here. they are trying to get this fire under control. again a second fire that has broken out here. very close to. just over a back fence in fact from the apartment building that burned late last night. so we will bring you back out here. hayward fire department is here. we will try to gather some information. but we do understand this was a carport fire. you can see the smoke here coming from that fire. we will get new details on this fire. for now we are live in hayward alex savidge ktvu channel 2 news. >> as alex just told you that fire is right near another fire in hayward that started late last night and a child is among the people who barely escaped the fast moving flames. it started shortly before 11:00 last night on an apartment on seventh street. a three-year-old child was thrown to safety from a second story window to a neighbor down below. three adults were forced to jump. >> it was scary. it was like fire, fire. and then we see the top of the roof. >> there were no serious injuries. investigators have traced the fire to a kitchen in one of the units. we are also following a breaking story. two people burned in an early morning house fire. janine de la vega is at the scene where crews are still there as we can see a very active scene. >> reporter: firefighters were able to knock down most of the fire. most of the damage is in the back of the house. firefighters had to saw off these metal bars that you see. the security bars on the front of the house. they originally told me they may have thought that prevented the people who lived inside from getting out. but fire captain and came up to me and told me they did have release bars from the inside so they could have released those bars but for some reason or another that wasn't activated. let's go to video. here is cell phone video taken by a neighbor where flames were shooting up in the air 20-30 feet high. the next door neighbor said he woke up to popping sounds and screaming. this was all taking police next door. it all happened at 3:45 this morning. the fire was in the back of the house. so there was some sort of structure there. we are told by firefighters it ended up collapsing while they tried to get inside. we know two people a man and a woman ran out of the garage area before fire crews came and they were badly burned here is what the next door neighbor had to say. >> they came running out of thage they were screaming. yelling call the fire department. one of them was holding their arm and crying. >> reporter: both of the victims were taken to burn units and we don't know what their condition as of now. we are told it was just some serious burns they are dealing with. right now firefighters are still on the scene. they are mopping up. fire captain told me he peeked in the windows at the back of the house and said the fire did jump from sort of outdoor structure to the house and a lot of the rooms there are gutted. they are waiting for a fire investigator to arrive on scene to start investigating to figure out what caused this fire. we are stay on top of it and give you an update when we get one. janine de la vega ktvu channel 2 news. happening today a news conference at saratoga high school to unvail audrey's law. a bill for cracking down on cyber bullying. it's named for audrey pott. the 15-year-old student who committed suicide in 2012. with one week after getting drunk and passing out at a party and three classmates were sent to juvenile hall for sexually assaulting her and taking photos of her. the proposed audrey's lieu would make it legal to prosecute minors as adults and make cyber bullying a felony in some cases. student was killed by a freight train. police say the eighth grader ran back on to the tracks to pick up her cell phone she had dropped. this morning's funeral begins at 10:30. two teenage boys being investigated were last month's water bottle attacks that injured several people. the chp says the boys threw water bottles from a pickup truck targeting as many as ten vehicles including two school buses. the incidents happened in and around santa rosa. investigators say the boys were identified by finding the owner of the pickup truck. neither suspect is cooperating with police and the investigation continues. time is 5:08. the city council will allow private companies to sponsor city programs and pay to put their names on city owned facilities. the council says it's a way to offset the cost to programs like the thursday night concert series. two of the council members said no on the proposal. they say is they are not comfortable with letting companies buy the names of city parks. a group of senate democrats in sacramento calling for strict new rules to make it illegal for state lawmakers to accept free tickets for concerts and sporting events. some include a performance by hip hop dance crew at a las vegas casino, disney land, and mixed marital arts fighting event. the state lawmakers that accepted the most free gift including travel last year includes rob bonza. $15,300. phil ting $14,900. and luis alejo $14,100. now to the california drought. the alameda water district is considering enforcing one of the toughest restrictions in the bay area to date. the report is the board may declare an emergency water shortage. punishment may include fines and jail time. but that will be in the most extreme cases. time is 5:10. california may soon get relief from the record breaking drought. climate experts predict el nino may be brewing later this year. that could bring a lot of badly needed rain next winter here to california. however, meteorologists say a lot could change between now and then. >> at this time it's way too early to determine if we are going to have a strong el nino or weak to moderate. so it's one of those things that we are definitely watching. >> now globally the return of el nino could mean warm, hot temperatures later this year. that could also mean billions of dollars in food crop losses around the world. back here at home clear skies in oakland predicted for tonight's first friday. thousands are expected to turn out for the monthly music and arts festival which was rained out last month. the street festival spans a five block area. bat kid did get his night at the oscars after all. five-year-old miles scott and andrew garfield took part in a mini oscar ceremony. here's a picture of the two in their tuxedos. the bat kid and spider man were supposed to make a beating bryan stow are facing new federal charges. a grand jury has indicted them for possessions of firearms. those weapons include assault style rifles. last month norwood and sanchez pled guilty to the attack at dodgers stadium that almost killed stow nearly three years ago. the case of a 16-year-old boy accused of setting another teenager on fire at an ac transit bus are heading to trial. richard thomas set 1-year-old -- 18-year-old sasha fleischman's skirt on fire. >> people talking my client. >> thomas is being tried as an adult facing charges that could land him in prison for life. he is due back in court on march 20th. police in san mateo say social media and two very brave kids help them catch an accused child predator. the police posted an alert about a man soliciting a girl for sex on north claremont street. two 12-year-old girls saw the alert and man's photo on facebook. and identified the suspect as alberto. >> and they recognize the individual from previous contact. they in turn told officials at the school that they go to and the school reported it to us. >> he turned himself in to police. he is now in the san mateo county jail facing several charges. investigators say this case would have been harder to solve years ago before social media became popular. a man from los angeles county is denying any connection to bit coin. that is despite a news week cover story identifying him as the creator of the wildly successful digital currency. he admits he has done classified work for the u.s. military and several big corporations. however, the 64-year-old man says he never even heard of bit coin until a news week reporter contacted him three weeks ago. >> the reason i'm here is to clear my name that i have nothing to do with bit coin. nothing to do with developing. i was just an engineer doing something else. >> news week still claims it has solved the mystery of exactly who came up with the concept of bit coin and the magazine is driver this morning on the bridge. fortunately that driver did not cause any major damage to herself or anyone else. thanks to the quick action of chp that got out there in front of her and basically stopped her. she has driven five, six miles or maybe longer before it was detected. let's take a look at -- and this is the freeway where it happened. 880 north and southbound. we see traffic is moving okay. i do see flashing lights up there. whenever i do that, we start looking around to see if anything is going on that we don't know about. let's go to the toll plaza. that is light. there have no major problems coming into san francisco. i want to check out the 580 freeway. it looks good. driving down to the fremont area. not a bad commute. san mateo bridge traffic looking good across for consumers to warn a permanent sales ban. a did win a judgment against samsung over patented technology on the older smart phones and both companies are headed back to court later this month. facebook changing your news feed. this picture is what it looks like now. facebook says it wants the web version and mobile version to match. here's a look at what it will look like. photos will be buried there. ray emery who was also a historian has spent years collecting and analyzing documents. he thinks 21 sailors listed as missing from the uss oklahoma when it sank during the attack they hagel asking him to order lab to examine the remains. 150 members of the national guard transportation based out of san jose are waking up in the comfort of their own beds this morning. guard members huge fire at a carport. it is on the same street where an apartment building caught fire just a coup hours ago. the ktvu alex savidge is right there talking to the fire victims. he will have a live check with steve. >> we have mostly clear skies. some patchy low clouds. but over all clear and a little chilly. a few high clouds to to the north. that fog is favoring the san mateo area. but other than that, it's pretty clear out there. and temperatures are cooler and a lot more 40s than we have seen most of this week. we've had a lot of cloud cover. but with the lack of that temperatures are allowed to cool off. temperatures look pretty good today. mostly sunny. right where they should be. and we'll fall into that category. occasionally higher clouds. over all a nice day. here is sal. steve, good morning. so far so good when it comes to the morning commute. we've had a couple early incidents that were taken care of rather quickly which is good news for us. let's take a look at the bay bridge. there is a ten minute drive time. a little bit of slowing at the toll plaza. but a little less than ten minutes across that span and we start counting at the toll plaza area and we are basically getting you across to the stay. this is a look at 880 north and southbound. you can see the traffic is moving well. taking about five minutes to get from downtown oakland. 580 traffic a little bit slow the altamont pass. as i pull back there is a not a lot going on. 880 the same thing goes. no problems gettings down to fremont. i have someone that tweets me and says what about highway 4? well here you go. westbound highway 4 it is doing well. there was a minor crash right near summersville road. it's on the shoulder. but there is not a lot of slow traffic out there. if you want to go, sir, go now. 5:32 let's go back to the desk. we continue to follow breaking news out of hayward. we first reported at the top of the hour two huge fires now just a short distance apart. ktvu alex savidge is joining us from the scene of the latest fire with incredible video. alex tells us you smelled the smoke from the scene of the first fire. >> reporter: yeah. we were out here covering the fire from last night. it happened about 11:00 inside this particular apartment building right here. it's on 7th street. we started to smell some folk. my photographer said do you smell something burning? so we hopped out of the truck and that is when we looked over and saw smoke and flames coming from the backside of the apartment. what was burning was the carport. i will show you the video near. this was just before 5:00 this morning. it was a carport at an apartment building that is a couple doors down here on seventh street. and the flames were huge. this fire really got rolling here. by our account this was not official from the fire department. just us looking at the scene and assessing the scene. we saw about eight cars that were burned in this fire. some very anxious moments for the people who live in that complex. we watched them as they were running out of their apartments as we were coming over to the fire and many people were hopping in their cars and doing whatever they could to move their cars out of the way of that fire. listen to one woman here who told us here car was burned in this carport fire. >> my car is a '98 honda and it's really my first car. so he is more sentimental than anything. and what was in the car. i live out of my car. so everything was in my car. >> reporter: and no one was hurt here. that carport area is sort of separated by a driveway from the apartment itself. although there is a home that is fairly close to the carport as well. things are sort of jumbled in there in the back area. obviously there was concern for the firefighters about this fire spreading beyond just that. but no one hurt as far as we can tell. we are still waiting to get an update here from the fire department especially when it comes to the cause of that fire. the fire just a couple doors away last night and now this fire some folks think it seems auspicious. we will talk to the fire department about exactly what was going on here this morning. how the second fire may have started here in hayward. live in hayward alex savidge ktvu channel 2 news. >> that carport fire just down the street from the fire that started at 11:00 last night that alex mentioned. that started at an apartment on seventh and c streets. a three-year-old child was thrown from a second story window and caught by a neighbor who was standing on the ground. three adults jumped to safety. there were no serious injuries. amazingly. the red cross now helping to provide shelter to about a dozen people living in that apartment complex. a person is in the hospital this morning after being hit by a car last night in san francisco. it happened on vaness and turk street. we don't know their name or have any details. the investigation continues. meantime the latest accident comes as the city of san francisco is getting ready to spend millions of dollars to make it safer for people to walk the streets. yesterday there was a presentation of recommendations from the walk first initiative. san francisco's police chief says pedestrian safety has to be a top priority this year. >> year to date we've had more people killed on the streets of san francisco in vehicle collisions than we have by homicide. it is a problem. >> so far this year five pedestrians have been killed in san francisco. the safety plans call for $17 million to be spent to improve 170 locations around the city. happening today a state senator says he will unvail audrey's law. legislation aimed at cracking down on the cyber bullying that played a role in a high school student's suicide. tara moriarty is joining us from the school with more on what the new law proposes. tara. >> reporter: in just four hours jim bell as well as the santa claire ram county district attorney and audrey's mother will be introducing the new legislation at the saratoga library. this comes months after three high school students boys were punished in juvenile court for photographing and sexually assaulting 15-year-old classmate audrey pott and sharing the text messages. some say the punishment was not harsh enough. audrey's law would make it crime easier to charge an adult court with harsh penalties. it it would make cyber bullying a crime. it would be illegal to post the offensive material online and share it or show it to friends. now audrey killed herself in september of 2012 one week after she drank too much vodka spiked gatorade at a house party. she woke up to find offensive messages written on her body. she later wrote quote my life is ruined. i'm in hell. the whole school knows. my life is over. coming up we will tell you what happened to those students charged in her case. live from saratoga i'm tara moriarty ktvu channel 2 news. time is 5:37. four suspected armed robbers are in jail this morning. they are accused of terrorizing a bingo hall in santa clara. that bold crime happened wednesday night at the aqua maids bingo hall. the suspects pretended to be bingo players for several hours before suddenly pulling out guns and grabbing a huge amount of cash. witnesses say at one point they attacked a 78-year-old woman for her bingo earnings. the arrests have not made the bingo players feel any safer. >> there is too much money involved. for our protection as bingo players they should have armed security. >> police say the woman who was attacked in the bingo hall was pistol whipped. we have no word right now on her condition. students and staff at a school in oakland are heartbroken after thieves made off with thousands of dollars worth of computers. it happened at joaquin miller elle men tear school. investigators say thieves climbed over a fence, broke a window, and stole about $35,000 worth of computers. >> it's a shame that people feel like they have the right to come into a school and rob children of their technology or anything that supports their education. >> three years ago volunteers helped raise the money to purchase the 25 i-macs. time is 5:39. last month we told you about water leaking into the new eastern span of the bay bridge. now we are getting a close look at those leaks. engineers found 900 leaks. and a gasket behind the bolts could allow water in if it's not properly tightened. water could be seeping in through tiny cracks in the caulking. now bridge officials say dehumidifiers can help guard against the leaks and help keep the bridge safe. there are five dehumidifiers that are placed in various locations on the new span. it was lights out on the western span of the bay bridge as the light show known as the bay lights marked its first anniversary. the 25,000 lights went dark for ten minutes. just giving everybody a chance to reflect on the impact of the piece of public art and what it had on san francisco. the lights are supposed to continue out there until next year but now there is a push to keep the lights on until 2026. candle stick park is living to see another day. the united soccer federation has announced the mens national soccer team will play an exhibition game may 27th. it's part of the world cup tune up. they will also play in new jersey and florida in june before heading to brazil. this will be the final scheduled game at the iconic stick before it is torn down. time is 5:40. old fashion police leg work trying to catch two armed robbers. coming ukraine on becoming a part of russia. yesterday president obama spoke for about an hour with russian president vladimir putin by phone. president obama set a referendum announced by prorussian authorities would violate international law. the referendum scheduled for march 16th would ask the people if they want to break away from ukraine and become a part of russia. >> any discussion about the future of ukraine must include the legitimate government of ukraine. in 2014 we are well beyond the days when borders can be redrawn over the heads of  democratic leaders. >> however, russian president putin calls the new ukrainian government ill legitimate. he says russians cannot ignore the protection of other russians. oscar pistorius trial. there is video of pistorius arriving at the courthouse. in the courtroom today a former girl friend of pistorius testified he carried a gun with him all the time when they were dating. and slept with a gun by his bedside. he said he killed his girlfriend in his home by mistake. thinking she was an intruder. prosecutors say he intentionally killed her after an argument. there is new information about the richmond schoolteacher accused of child sex abuse. on wednesday police arrested ron ginto while he was teaching seventh grade students at his new job. now he began work there just months after being fired from the making waves academy charter school. ktvu news has learned that dismissile came while police were investigating charges that ginto sexually abused several students there during camping trips. and he was preparing for another overnight trip with students when he was arrested. >> something that wasn't disclosed in two or three weeks he was going to take a group of kids on a field trip over night to yosemite. >> the school board 39 president is vowing improve the background checks. time is 5:45. oakland mayor jean quan in her state of the city address says oakland is headed in the right direction. last night she have with san francisco. if you are leaving the city trying to get down to the airport, it should be a ten minute drive for you. nothing more than that. traffic is looking good coming the other way up the peninsula into downtown san francisco. at the bay bridge we still have a ten minute crossing. a little bit of waiting at the toll plaza. once you get on the bridge, it is a nice drive. the drive time is between 10-15 minutes. i would say it's closer to 10 at this point. if you are driving in contra costa county some slow traffic on highway 4 in antioch. after that it does look good all the way out to concord. otherwise a minor crash. the traffic is always slow. 80 looks good from health care lease to richmond. if you are driving past if you get on the freeway after summersville road, you will be in much better shape by the way on highway 4. let's go to steve. thank you, sal. fog, a little cooler on the lows. mostly sunny today. about the same on saturday. don't forget we spring employers added 175,000 jobs last month. that is up from 129,000 in january. on the news it looks like the markets are responding favorably to that report. there is concern and confusion over the announcement that the owner of albertson's is buying safeway. we are told the safeway name won't go away and it's popular rewards card program will remain at least for now. he say there is are no plans to close stores. business expert tells ktvu news she expects layoffs to eliminate duplicating jobs. workers suffered when the company owns albertson bought the chain in 2006. >> it was debt don't forget those jackets today. jumping over to mass transit right now, everything is right on time as far as bart, muni, caltrain and ace trains go this morning. we are getting reports though of the vallejo ferry is using bus shuttle service this morning due to mechanical problems so plan for that. elsewhere lots of roadwork this morning. live look at the golden gate bridge not a lot of cars on the road this morning as you can see, but there is construction southbound just north of the bridge as you head near the waldo tunnel. you might see delays through marin county this morning. 101 if you have an early flight to catch at sfo, you're in luck. traffic is in the green speeds around 65 miles per hour northbound near sfo. no delays southbound, 280 looking good as well as you work your way through san bruno and colma. no delays there. but 280 in the south bay construction right around highway 87. that's traffic. back to you. >> all right, gianna. thank you. the 61st annual national prayer breakfast is just getting under way in washington, d.c. you can see the president and his wife there. this is at the hilton washington international ballroom. every president since eisenhower has addressed this event and president obama will do so this morning. the point of the event is to gather a group of political and religious leaders. this is a bipartisan group as well as a group of activists. they do it every year. an estimated 3,000 people from 140 countries are at the event. again, this is at the washington hilton and president obama is expected to speak in just a little bit. 5:04. san francisco police are asking for some help in trying to connect a person of interest with a child abduction cold case. 10-year-old kevin collins disappeared back in 1984 and investigators are now focused on a former neighbor who died five years ago. this man, wayne jackson, had a history of abusing children. he was interviewed at the time collins disappeared and now he is under investigation again for the very same reasons. time, opportunity, location, prior to, who he was, what he had done in the past, same reason he was a person of interest then. >> when he finally was apprehended, he only spent six months in jail and three months probation. they knew enough about this guy. >> jackson was known to have used at least five different names over the years. a triple murder in western sonoma county on tuesday was apparently over marijuana. three men were shot to death in a cabin near forestville. investigators think the three were there to buy a large amount of pot. two of them had come from out of state to make that transaction. the third victim was from petaluma. police say they were shot to death in a bedroom full of drugs. >> what i hear, i guess 100 pounds, $200,000 deal and some fool just took their life. >> investigators have not released any information on the suspects. handcuffs didn't stop a san jose suspect from stealing a police van. officers are still looking for him this morning. kpix 5 reporter cate caugiran is outside police headquarters with the great escape. kind of an unbelievable story. >> reporter: good morning. i'm sure san jose police officers are still scratching their heads as they continue to look for that suspect who essentially pulled a houdini. this is the man officers are looking for, anthony sanchez seen in the picture. he is about 5'5", 275 pounds. yesterday afternoon san jose police went to the parkside glen apartments on hillsdale road to arrest him for outstanding warrants. officers say they had to double cuff him because sanchez couldn't get his arms close enough together. but there was something he could do. officers put sanchez in the back of an unmarked car. when one officer was distracted with paperwork, sanchez slipped his cuffs and was able to jump in the driver's seat and drove away. >> now it's just going back to square one to find the suspect. hopefully he will still have the handcuffs on when we find him. >> reporter: two hours later police found the minivan parked in a neighborhood about a mile away. all of the equipment was still in the front seat. there were no firearms inside. now, as for how sanchez got these keys in the first place, san jose police say it is common practice for them to leave the keys in the ignition if they are close by. cate caugiran, kpix 5. iran's state-run media has released video taken from a u.s. spy drone that cashed in the country in 2011. the video shows an aerial view of an airport and a city said to be a u.s. drone base in kandahar, afghanistan. iran says it used the drone to build its own unmanned aircraft. so far no official comment on the video from the u.s. plenty of questions about u.s. drone policies are expected today as lawmakers question president obama's nominee to lead the cia. white house counter-terrorism chief john brennan will appear before the senate intelligence committee. his confirmation hearing starts just hours after lawmakers are set to receive a classified report on the rationale for drone strikes targeting americans who work with al qaeda overseas. the pentagon is reducing the number of aircraft carriers in the persian gulf to one from two. the defense department made that announcement yesterday as deep automatic spending cuts loom for defense and domestic programs here. those cuts will kick in at the beginning of next month. and unless congress agrees to an alternate budget plan before then. defense secretary leon panetta says severe military cuts would harm the nation's security and the economy. >> we will furlough as many as 800,000 department of defense civilians around the country for up to 22 days. they could face a 20% cut in their salary. you don't think that's going to impact or economy? >> some economists estimated a march 1 sequestration could result in up to a million people losing their jobs. today some house democrats are set to unveil their plans to curb gun violence. the 15 proposals are said to be similar to those proposed by the obama administration, including background checks on all gun purchases and bans on assault weapons and high capacity magazines. but some proposals are expected to have little chance of passing in the republican- controlled house. marin county is about to make good on its vouchers issued during its gun buy-back program. $43,000 was set aside for last month's program that paid people who turned in guns but the money ran out, so organizers handed out $70,000 worth of vouchers. those vouchers can be redeemed a week from tomorrow thanks to private donations and funds from the county and its cities. 5:09 now. operators of the north bay oyster farm are going to a federal appeals court now in their fight to kept their business open. interior secretary ken salazar has ordered the closure of the drakes bay oyster farm to return the area to wilderness conditions. a judge in oakland rejected their appeal. they have been given until mid- march to remove their equipment from drakes bay. a stray bolt cussed a sudden lurch on a san francisco cable car injuring 7 people on board. i know muni is trying to figure out where that bolt came from. the cable car stopped suddenly on the rails at powell and washington yesterday just before noon. the impact knocked an elderly rider out on the street. he is now being treated for a head injury. nobody else though was injured. and san jose mayor chuck reed will deliver his annual state of the city address this evening at civic auditorium. the mayor is expected to talk about the city's budget issues. there are safety issues as well as officers are leaving the city's police department in the wake of cuts to pay and benefits in the city. we are going to speak live with mayor reed a little after 6:00 this morning right here on kpix 5. the final closing of the new bay bridge will end with a big party for the people. >> before the bridge -- the bridge bash includes a public walk across the new east span before it opens to cars, trucks and motorcycles. mtc is trying to organize a half marathon, a bike ride and fireworks show for that party. the public party will be a day or two before vehicles are allowed to use the new span on september 3. the final bridge closure is set for august 28 and will last four days. and the countdown to deck either. you're clear all the way into san francisco. the rest ofyour bay area bridges same story a live look at the san mateo bridge 14 minutes to work your way between 880 and 101. 880 itself not causing or showing any problems this morning. 101 looks good, as well. i'll show you a map of that in a second. right now we are going to the golden gate bridge and so far, traffic is quiet at the golden gate bridge. have some early-morning roadwork 101 southbound near the waldo tunnel wrapped up. traffic free-flowing no delays into san francisco. we are accident-free right now really the only thing is roadwork. north 87 that ramp to north 280 still closed. that should open by 6 a.m. nice speeds overall as you work your way through the south bay. 237 both directions construction there connecting to northbound 880. no delays on the westbound side connecting between 880 and 101. 4 looking good, as well. we have slight delays on the eastbound side because of roadwork. that is still in effect. should be wrapped up before 6:00. westbound no delays to report. sluggish off the antioch bridge but quiet as you work your way through there. but i hear there is rain on the way, lawrence. >> isn't that exciting, gianna? >> it is! >> yeah, i'm excited about it. high-def doppler radar showing a few of those showers beginning to show up in the north bay right now. won't be too long before it moves south. you can see it as it slides through now. it's going to be picking up. not strong but a chance of scattered showers on and off throughout the day today and some much colder temperatures. as a matter of fact, so cold tonight, we could see some snow down to about 2500 feet across our local mountain peaks. so cold front sliding in right now right out of the gulf of alaska. that's going to move on through. once the cold front moves by behind that you get into all that cold, unstable air so carry that umbrella. we are likely to see some sunny breaks between the clouds. it's going to be beautiful but very coal. there's a chance you could see an isolated thunderstorm. let's see if we can time it out. here's the cold front. i was talking about sliding on through about 10:00. you can see it making its way down in along the peninsula sliding in toward the east bay. behind that maybe a couple of sunny breaks in between the clouds and then we have the scattered showers that will likely pop up and pass across the bay area not only today but into tomorrow morning. and then maybe that's when we'll see the cold enough temperatures to actually see snow across our peaks. temperatures going to look like this. or rain amounts look like this, know the that heavy. a tenth or so into the santa cruz mountains just under that into san francisco. i think temperature-wise, we'll keep you on the cool side. it will be brisk and breezy into the afternoon. 50s everywhere you go. and it's going to feel colder than that with that wind kicking up and as showers popping up today and possibly into tomorrow morning, and then we begin to dry things out. saturday and sunday look good, drier warmer weather. but these next couple of days the first time we have been able to shooting in riverside county kills one cop, injures two others this morning. these are some live pictures from one of the crime scenes. investigators say the suspected gunman is an ex-l.a. police officer christopher jordan dorner, also wanted for killing the daughter of the former lapd captain and her fiance in irvine over the weekend. officers say dorner is armed and extremely dangerous. there is a blue alert now activated for eight counties in southern california from kern county down to san diego county. police say he wrote an online manifesto threatening to harm police officers, officials and their families. the lapd has placed security at the homes of those officers and officers say dorner was last seen driving a 2005 blue or gray nissan titan vehicle with ski racks on the roof. some breaking news from the north bay where three people were shot during a home invasion robbery. kpix 5 reporter elissa harrington is in vallejo this morning where the suspects are still at large. elissa. reporter: good morning. i just spoke with the sergeant with the vallejo police department who said this appears to have started as a home invasion and that the family that lives here might have been targeted randomly. this happened around 3:40 a.m. two armed men kicked in the door to this house on the 1500 block of mcdougle street. they started to make their way upstairs. a mother and her adult children live here. the son heard some commotion so he woke up and went out into the hall to see what was going on. he was then shot in the face. the 59-year-old mother came outside of her room and was shot in the hip. then the daughter in her 20s also came out and was shot. she however was holding a pillow that actually shielded her so the bullet only hit her finger. the two men then ran from the scene. they are both armed and police are actively searching for them. the only description we have now is that one was black, the other hispanic male wearing a hoodie. police have not said what the men might have been after or what if anything was taken. all of the victims are being treated at the hospital and are expected to recover from their injuries. live in vallejo, elissa across the mountain peaks tonight and tomorrow morning. temperatures chilly. 38 degrees in livermore. 43 in santa rosa. and 40 degrees in san jose. this afternoon, highs going to stay cool. yesterday we had numbers in the 50s and low 60s. today we are going to start to get in the 50s in some parts of the bay area. plan on low to mid-50s. it will be cool, brisk and breezy. gianna, sometimes wet out there today. >> that's not going to be fun, especially if you are on the roadways this morning. so far we are not seeing any problems with slick surfaces but, of course, that could change. here's a live look at the bay bridge toll plaza. easy ride. no metering lights just yet. not seeing any delays as you work your way through there clear all the way into san francisco. if you are working with yourly that the maze, so far, so good. problem near lincoln, we have a tree in the road that may cause slow conditions but again, that's on the southbound side of 13 so it shouldn't cause any problems for the morning commute. highway 84 and 680, we have reports of a car fire. no word if any lanes are block, but chp and fire crews are headed out to the scene so heads up there. and westbound 4 slow through antioch but construction has been cleared. san francisco police are now focused on a man who has been dead for years as they reopen a cold case from 1984. it's a case involving kevin collins, who was kidnapped from the haight when he was just 10. the person of interest is wayne jackson. he died five years ago. he was a neighbor of collins. he had a history of child abuse and was considered a possible suspect at the time. >> he was detained. he was interviewed. he allowed a consent search of the same house we just did a search warrant on, and a photo spread was shown to the two witnesses that described the suspect with a large black dog and they weren't able to pick hm out, out of the photo spread. >> the knew enough about his pass. listen, they dropped the ball on this guy. >> that was marc klaas whose daughter polly was murdered. he says the police department should have taken jackson more seriously back in 1984. one second he was handcuffed in the back seat, the next thing san jose police knew, their suspect was driving away with their van. kpix 5 reporter cate caugiran is outside police headquarters with how the suspect gave the cops the slip. cate, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, frank. i'm sure that is what san jose police officers are trying to figure out. what happened and how did this man get away? right now officers are looking for this man here on your screen. 32-year-old anthony sanchez is a husky 5'5" and about 275 pounds. sanchez violated parole on a drug conviction so yesterday officers around 3:30 went to the parkside glen apartments on hillsdale road to arrest him. officers had to double cuff him because he couldn't get his arms close together. undercover officers put him in an unmarked police minivan and when an officer was distracted by paperwork, sanchez made his move. >> literally took a couple of seconds where the officer bent over to pick up the paperwork and the suspect literally slipped his cuffs, was able to jump into the driver's seat, put the car in gear and flee the scene. >> reporter: police found the van two hours later near the almaden expressway. nothing was stolen from inside. stay police say it is common -- san jose police say it is common practice to leave the keys in the ignition if they are close by. cate caugiran, kpix 5. >> thank you. the san jose mayor chuck reed will deliver his annual state of the city address this evening at civic auditorium. the mayor is expected to talk about the city's budget issues as officers are now leaving the city's police department in the wake of cuts to pay and benefits. we're going to speak live with mayor reed coming up in the 6:00 hour. meanwhile, a new poll conducted for the city shows most residents support a measure to increase the sales tax there. 64% of san jose voters polled said that they would support a general purpose sales tax measure. 70% would support a quarter percent increase, 57% would support a half percent increase. the final closing of the new bay bridge will end with a big party. the big bridge bash includes a public walk across the new east span before it opens to cars, trucks and motorcycles after the labor day weekend. the metro transportation commission is trying to organize a half marathon, bike ride and fireworks show for the big party. the public party will be a day or two before vehicles are allowed to use the new span on september 3. the final bridge closure is set for august 28. and it's expected to last 4 days over that labor day weekend. and the countdown to the new bay bridge is on. kpix 5 >> reporter: it talks about aging and the care of our loved ones and this is suc a timely subject. we are about to see a population boom from 40 million to 70 million in the next two decades for elderly. we are going to see a 19% pop in that population by the end of this decade alone. so we are getting older. boy, this movie does conjure up a lot of tough conversations that we probably have to have as a result. >> and what is the importance of the big demographic shift? >> reporter: i think that although you or your loved ones might be really healthy today, government statistics show 70% of those over 65 will require some kind of long-term care services during their lives. doesn't have to be worst-case scenario but it may mean assistance with basic activities like dressing or shopping. the problem, many seniors are totally embarrassed to ask for help and fear that their relatives might want to remove them from their homes and boy, they want to stay where they have been. >> right. well, what should family members look for to help their aging relatives? a 59-year-old woman lives here with her two adult children both in their 20s. the son woke up first and went into the hall to see what was going on. he was shot in the face. the mother then came or the of her room and was shot in the hip -- the mother then came out of her room and was shot in the hip. the daughter was shot but she was holding a pillow that shieldle her so the bullet only hit her finger. all three-family members were taken to the hospital and are expected to recover from their injuries. police don't know why the house was targeted or if anything was taken. both suspects are armed and police say that both of them fired shots in this house. i also just spoke with another officer and asked about crime in the area. he said this is actually one of the safer areas of vallejo. elissa harrington, kpix 5. new this morning, san jose firefighters knocked down a house fire off mckendry street in the city's rose garden area this morning. the home was vacant. it took an hour to put it out. the residents near dana avenue. no injuries. investigators looking for the cause. 6:03. it's been a while since we had to grab an umbrella but apparently we do today. >> and i a jacket. it's going to be cold. showers showing up around the bay area. our kpix 5 high-def doppler radar, picking up on scattered showers most of it in the north bay but you can see the line spreading further to the south. we have had reports of showers into santa rosa. you can speckled showers elsewhere with you but that's sliding south throughout the day today. if you haven't had rain hold on. it may be in your neighborhood soon. not a strong cold front but there is a lot of cold air with this system sliding by so we get on the back side. very cold temperatures in the bay area. 2500 feet snow level tonight and tomorrow. today 30s, 50s and 40s. it will be cool. you will need the jacket and umbrella in the afternoon. let's check the roads with gianna. >> thank you, lawrence. we are starting to see a backup at the bay bridge. no metering lights just yet. but as you can see in those cash lanes, traffic is starting to stack up just a little there. we'll keep you updated on that little slow up the incline, as well. if you are taking mass transit this morning, bart, muni, caltrain on time. vallejo ferry is using bus bridges for mechanical problems. second day they have had to do that. ace train number one running between 6 to 10 minutes behind schedule so plan for that this morning. southbound 13 at joaquin miller we have a tree blocking the right lane. we have activity there on scene and we are starting to see some delays along 13 as a result. westbound 580 also stacked up. you're slow-and-go out of tracy through the livermore valley. a little sluggish at 680, as well. back to you. >> thank you. san francisco police are asking for some help in trying to connect a person of interest with a child abduction cold case. 10-year-old kevin collins disappeared in 1984. investigators are now focused on a former neighbor who died five years ago. this man wayne jackson had a history of abusing children. he was interviewed at the time of collins' disappearance and now is under investigation once again for those very same reasons. >> time, opportunity, location, priors, who he was, what he had done in the past. the same reason he was a person of interest then. >> when he finally was apprehended, he only spent 6 months in jail and then three months probation. they knew enough about this guy. >> marc klaas has been an advocate for missing children since his daughter polly was kidnapped and killed. >> manned cuffs didn't stop a san jose suspect from stealing a police van. officers are still looking for him this morning. kpix 5 reporter cate caugiran is outside police headquarters with more on his escape. >> good morning. >> i'll be looking forward to a good year this coming year. the economy is getting better. the silicon valley leading the country out of recession. we have a lot of work to do yet. we have $3 billion in unfunded liabilities for retirement costs. so we need to implement pension reform and begin to restore services that have been cut over the last decade. >> we have been reporting lots of stories and one is san jose having a small police force especially for a city of nearly a million people. officers are leaving because of these recent cuts in their pay and benefits. is anything being done to revers that? >> yes, that's one of the issues to deal with. the police force is too small, understaffed. we need to grow the force. if we can implement the pension reforms, we can grow the force. between then and now we need to do some steps to improve retention of officers with performance bonuses and targeted pay increases. we want to restore services. that's the highest priorities is to restore our capacity in our police for the next year. >> the new poll says folks in san jose would favor perhaps a quarter percent maybe even half percent hike in the sales tax in the city to help the coffers. any thoughts on that? [ laughter ] >> oh, yeah. >> high energy. >> big time. gianna, traffic? >> bay bridge toll plaza, the metering lights are on. they were turned on about 5 minutes ago. and you can see it is starting to stack up. so lots of company there, lots of company up the incline, as well. clear though past treasure island into san francisco. elsewhere, the san mateo bridge both directions, still moving along pretty nicely. extra volume on the westbound side as you work your way towards foster city. but about a 15 to 16-minute ride to go between 880 and 101. now, over to our maps we go. one of our hot spots is near the altamont pass. we are seeing some brake lights in the east bay there, westbound 580 out of tracy from about 205 as you work your way through the livermore valley. eases up a little around airway but you will see brake lights once you hit 680. westbound 4, business as usual. slow-and-go conditions through antioch. and better news along highway 13. southbound, right at joaquin miller we have reports of a tree in the roadway, that's been cleared. also, getting word of some extra volume along 280 through daly city. and southbound 101 near sfo reports of a broken-down big rig possibly blocking lanes. i'll have more details on that in a few minutes. right now we need details on this earthquake to, lawrence. >> big changes from yesterday. beautiful skies around the bay area, lots of sunshine. today clouds rolled in and our cbs 5 high-def doppler radar is tracking some raindrops most of that in the north bay. but you can see that is beginning to slide a little further to the south. now, not the biggest storm we have ever seen but going to get things unsettled and wet throughout the day today. even the possibility of an isolated thunderstorm. and some very cold temperatures. overnight tonight, into tomorrow morning, maybe some snow down to about 2500 feet right here on our local peaks. so a cold front on approach bringing all that cold air from the gulf of alaska. that is going to help drop the temperatures outside today. and maybe bring some thunderstorms and some scattered showers. so carry that umbrella and a jacket. it's going to be cool and wet at times. as we look at our computer model you can see that front as it slides on by, just some scattered showers moving on through so not the biggest storm we've seen. but behind that a lot of cold air and a chance of more showers into the afternoon. then overnight tonight and into tomorrow morning. so you get the idea, things could be wet at times. and if you are traveling today, maybe a little bumpy out of sfo. showers at times. maybe a possible delay at sfo. houston looking good 82 degrees. 52 and sunny in denver. chicago more snow on the way. cold temperatures in new york with mostly cloudy skies. temperatures here in the low to mid-50s. i think over the next couple of days, we will see the return of some sunshine over the weekend. but thursday and friday, they look to be a little wet a little cool. a little brisk and breezy. warmer weather and dry for the weekend. >> that's good. at least saturday and sunday are dry. >> monday looks great. >> should be fabulous. morning, it's thursday, february 7. i'm michelle griego. >> hi, everyone. i'm frank mallicoat. it is 6:31 i know. >> a violent shooting spree in southern california leaves one officer dead and two others injured. the suspect is an ex-lapd officer. he is now the center of a massive manhunt in southern california. we have live pictures from the crime scene right now. cbs reporter susan mcginnis with the online manifesto that targets the suspect's former colleagues. >> reporter: police helicopters are flying over the communities of riverside and corona an hour's drive from los angeles. three police officers were shot early today. one died. investigators say the suspect is a former alameda officer and navy reservists named christopher dorner who posted an online manifesto threatening police officials and their families. >> his whereabouts are unknown. and we are asking for the public's help in finding him. we have strong cause to believe dorner is armed and dangerous. >> reporter: dorner is also suspected of shooting and killing a college basketball coach and her fiance in a parking garage sunday night. the father of the coach, monica quan, represented dorner in front of a disciplinary board when dorner was dismissed from the lapd for making false statements. police say he is out for revenge. susan mcginnis, cbs news. the lapd has placed security at the homes of the officers. police say dorner was last seen driving a 2005 blue or gray nissan titan vehicle. that car also ski racks on the roof. and we have some developing news from the north bay back here in the bay area where three people were shot during a home invasion robbery. kpix 5 reporter elissa harrington is in vallejo this morning where the suspects are still at large. >> reporter: some terrifying moments for the family that lives here. they were asleep when two gunmen kicked down the front door. a mother and two adult children live here and police believe it was a random home invasion. a 911 call came in around 3:40 this morning. two armed men forced their way into this house on mcdougle. they started to make their way upstairs when the family members started waking up one by one. first the son went into the hallway to check out the noise an was shot in the face. his 59-year-old mother came out of her room and was shot in the hip. they are her daughter in her 20s came out of her room as was also shot. she was holding a pillow, which shielded her and the bullet only grazed her finger. all three were taken to the hospital with nonlife- threatening injuries. the suspects ran from the scene and police have not released a detailed description except that one of them was wearing a hoodie. police are investigating what if anything was taken. an officer tells me this is a low crime neighborhood. we're on mcdougle which is only a few blocks from terrace park and parallel to sacramento street. he says they come out here every so often to respond to break-ins but not violent crimes like this. what's happening now is police have to get a search warrant to collect evidence from the home so they say they will be out here for at least the next couple of hours. again, the search is on for those two suspects. in vallejo, elissa harrington, kpix 5. new this morning, san jose firefight, knocking down a house fire off mckendry street this morning. fire crews say the home vacant at the time took them about an hour to contain the flames at the residence near dana avenue. no injuries were reported. investigators are now looking for a cause of the fire in san jose. 6:34. the first rain in quite a while. >> yes. it's been a long time. longer than you've been gone. you had all the rain there in new orleans. you had a good storm there. this is a cold one though out there today as showers are picking up in parts of the north bay now. scattered showers, there you go. high-def doppler radar showing you some of that rainfall outside right now. taking you in for a closer look traveling up along the 101 you have some pockets of some moderate amounts of rainfall into petaluma, this is all sliding to the south and east throughout the morning and into the afternoon. so here's that cold front not the strongest one we have seen but hey, we're glad to get showers through here moving by this morning. behind that, you have some very cold, unstable air and that will bring with it a chance of more scattered showers throughout the day. temperatures a little chilly to start. 30s and 40s right now. by the afternoon, it is going to be cool, brisk and a bit breezy. well, it will be wet at times too. the numbers yesterday afternoon in the 50s and low 60s. today, i think lows maybe some mid-50s outside. and a chance of some more showers out there, gianna. >> thank you, downtown san jose. guadalupe parkway no delays. highway 17 moving well in both directions. westbound 237 starting to stack up also. eight minutes still between 880 and 101. but a little slow as you make the connector there. also westbound 580 a 30-minute ride now to go from the altamont pass to 680. so pack your patience there. westbound highway 4 brake lights as well through antioch. looks better into pittsburg. no delays once you come off the eastshore freeway but if you are headed towards the bay bridge we are seeing slight delays right around powell street through emeryville. live focused on a man who has been dead for years as they reopen a cold case from 1984. it's the case involving kevin collins who was kidnapped from the haight when he was just 10. the person of interest is wayne jackson who died five years ago. he was a neighbor of collins', had a history of child abuse and was considered a possible suspect at the time. >> he was detained. he was interviewed. he allowed a consent search of the same house we just did a search warrant on and a photo spread was shown to the two witnesses that described the suspect with a large black dog and they couldn't pick him out of a photo spread. >> they dropped the ball on this guy. >> that was marc klaas who has been involved missing children cases since his daughter was kidnapped and murdered from their petaluma home. a man in handcuffs gave the police a slip his getaway vehicle a police anyone any van. kpix 5 reporter cate caugiran -- a minivan. cate caugiran explains how it all happened. >> reporter: good morning. i'm sure as san jose police officers are getting into work this morning they will try to figure out how this man got away. first, they are still trying to look for that suspect. we do have a photo of the so- called escape artist. take a look now. % 2-year-old anthony sanchez a big man, 5'5", 275 pounds. sanchez violated his parole on a drug conviction so yesterday around 3:30 officers went to the parkside glen apartments on hillsdale to arrest him. officers had to double cuff him because he couldn't get his arms close together. undercover officers put him in an unmarked police minivan and an officer was distracted by paperwork and sanchez made his move. lit rally took a couple of seconds when the officer bent over to pick up the paperwork. the suspect slipped his cuffs, put the car in gear and fled the scene. >> reporter: police found the van two hours later near almaden and wren drive. nothing was stolen from inside. as for how the suspect got the keys, san jose police say it's common practice to leave the keys in the ignition if they are close by. cate caugiran, kpix 5. san jose mayor chuck reed will deliver his annual state of the city address tonight. the mayor is expected to talk about the city's budget woes. there are safety concerns, as well. one of the nation's safest major cities crime has been on the rise and police officers have been leaving the city in the wake of cuts to pay and benefits. may mayor reed addressed that as he spoke with us live about a half hour ago. >> that's one of the issues we have to deal with. the police force is too small, understaffed. we need to grow the force. if we can implement our pension reforms, we'll have money to grow the force. between then and now we need to do some steps to improve the retention of officers with performance bonuses and targeted pay increases. >> the state of the city set to begin at 6:30 tonight at the civic auditorium. >> iran's state-run media have released video supposedly taken from a u.s. spy drone that crashed in the country in 2011. the video includes an aerial view of an airport and a city said to be a u.s. drone base in kandahar, afghanistan. iran claims it used the drone it build its own unmanned aircraft. so far no official comment on the video from u.s. officials. and aid workers in the solomon islands are struggling to reach remote tsunami-ravaged villages while the death toll rises. three more bodies were found today bringing the total dead to at least 9 people on santa cruz island in the south pacific. strong aftershocks following yesterday's powerful traffic jam was some drivers in romania probably thought they were dreaming when they saw 60 sheep? the road. it was a nightmare for drivers. the shepherd and his son had no food for the sheep and walked more than 6 miles through the center of the city to another field. he was fined by a police officer for disrupting traffic. they did eventually make it out of the city which is good. >> sheep that. >> it's nice to live in the bay area. showers and told temperatures. maybe a little dusting of snow across the mountaintops. check this system. a cold front finally sliding into the bay area bringing in with it some scattered showers in the north bay. pockets of moderate rainfall we are going to see that on and off throughout the day today. this afternoon colder temperatures and tonight a chance we could see some snow down to about 2500 feet. a cold front finally bringing flowers back to the bay area. not going to be the strongest storm we have ever seen but it's going to be cold and we could see isolated thunderstorms too. so carry that umbrella. broken showers sliding through right now into the middle of the day. and that will continue to move on through as we head toward the afternoon. just pockets of showers but then in the evening hours for the commute look at the cell being picked up on the computer model sliding on through could see some thunderstorms embedded in that. wet overnight tonight into early tomorrow morning. tomorrow afternoon things settle down. .1" of rain in the wettest parts of the bay area, otherwise things are going to be more scattered as the system moves by. the temperatures are going to be cold though, plan on highs only in the low to mid-50s and that is about it. more showers as we head into tomorrow and it tapers off by tomorrow afternoon. dry weather expected on saturday and sunday. looks like toward next week temperatures should be a little warmer and dry too. bay bridge reports of an accident westbound just past the metering lights. you can see on our live shot of the toll plaza we are backed up. the metering lights are on so slow ride as you work your way through there. jumping to the maps, delays because of this accident. the good news it's out of lanes and over to the right shoulder but you can see the damage is done. so grab your jacket, get going. you might need extra minutes on the bay bridge. past the accident near treasure island traffic moves well into san francisco. off the eastshore freeway brake lights as well near ashby. a little slow near powell street, also. southbound 680 near lake herman an accident with two vehicles involved over to the center divide no lanes blocked but some slight delays as you approach the scene. also through the south bay northbound 101 we are seeing some slow conditions as you work your way through san jose. so a few brake lights near mckee and julian. pretty much in that area. northbound 280, downtown san jose. sluggish at the guadalupe parkway northbound brake lights this morning. checking travel times through the south bay north 101, 280, 680 connector towards 237 about a 14-minute ride right now. elsewhere 237 itself westbound seeing some slightly slower conditions as you make the connector. still though in the green. 8 minutes between 880 and 101. so far, so good out of marin county. a little drizzly as law, said. we have seen some slick surfaces up there but clear into san francisco. 6:48. the ntsb will update us this morning on its investigation into the battery fire on japan airlines dreamliner today. the chairman says the board is still weeks away from determining the cause. the dreamliner fleet all still grounded but the faa has given boeing permission to relocate a single plane today and it will come from texas and fly back to washington state. some new numbers suggest that the nation's employment picture is beginning to pick up. >> here now is kcbs radio's financial reporter jason brooks. >> reporter: some decent news on the job market coming from the labor department. weekly jobless claims fell by 5,000 to 366,000 and the four- week average sitting just above 350,000 a nearly five-year low. the labor department also reporting news that worker productivity fell 2% in the fourth quarter after a 3.2% gain in the third. labor costs had their biggest rise in three-quarters up 4.5%. could be another big airline merger on the way. u.s. airways and american airlines are talking about combining. american's parent company is going through bankruptcy protection. so it would have to do this coming out of that. we just recently had united and continental go through. there was some glitches in the reservation systems changing over. most experts say that we probably wouldn't see much higher airfares due to the cost savings associated with a potential merger but certainly not a done deal yet. stock market coming off a flat day yesterday. and starting out this morning in some of the same vein. let's look at the numbers. right now the dow dropping 26 points. nasdaq lower by 2. s&p down by a fraction. online review site yelp reported its earnings after the closing bell yesterday. mixed report and end regular mail delivery on saturdays. some analysts believe that will increase the video company's profits by lowering the cost of sending out dvds in those red envelopes. the theory, subscribers may end up watching fewer dvds for the same monthly price. 1500 jobs are about to open up here in the bay area. home depot is getting ready for a busy spring. home improvement chain hiring 80,000 new workers all across the country. that is a 14% increase in seasonal hiring for the depot. home depot is encouraging military members, veterans and retirees to come in and apply. so when you go home after a day on the job, do you end up dealing with work-related issues on your smartphone? well, some chicago police officers say they do. there are going to federal court to be paid for overtime for doing all that work. the suit claims police brass pressured the officers to handle some of the work related calls and e-mails after hours. but told them not to put in for overtime. i think a lot of
