said they will only vote for mccarthy for speaker no matter how many rounds of votes it takes. joining us now the author of that piece politics reporter for the daily beast ursula perano. welcome to you let s dive right in. in your reporting you talk about the never kevin group, it s five congressmen, do you foresee that group growing and how much of a problem do you foresee that group able to be against mccarthy with such a slim majority in the house? yeah, absolutely. you know, it s five for now, but they do sort of say that they think there are more of them, more folks weighing their votes or folks potentially trying to make a splashy showing of their vote on january 3rd. i do think there is potentially holdouts here, people in the house freedom caucus, you know, have voiced grievances against how the house has been run, tried to push mccarthy for certain rules changes that he has not yet committed to those are the folks i m watching in that space to potentially come around to t
i don t want to make it sound too simple but i don t expect them to be chummy. they are the antithesis of one another. mccarthy is west coast, jefferies is east coast. he is rising to his position with not much internal push back from democrats, didn t have any challenger, folks let him ascend to this role feeling he was the best for the job mccarthy is going through all of this and so that sort of juxtaposition matters when they re coming in but the reality is that kevin mccarthy if he wins this vote, if he becomes speaker is going to have to learn how to work with democrats. the senate is held by democrats. the presidency is held by a democrat and there are must pass bills every congress, government funding, defense spending, sometimes aid to respond to natural disasters, things of that nature. he has to figure out how to work across the aisle to bring those things through i don t expect that s going to be easy for him. he didn t show that as one of his strengths during nancy pelosi
