yelled up to her not to do it. >> reporter: then in the split second it takes to make a decision she jumped and fell 50 feet. 51-year-old vietnam vet donny navidad of stockton tried to catch her and stop her from plummeting to certain death. >> because i'm concerned with her. and like i said she's a young lady that's still got a whole lot of life left in her. >> reporter: but the force of the petite victim falling simply too much. >> what i tried to do was grab her so she wouldn't bounce. my co-worker said that she had bounced maybe six yards from me. >> reporter: covered in bruises, donny didn't want anyone to see the woman die and it was marine instincts that kicked in to use his body as a human shield to break her fall. his wife laura thinks she's a hero. a scaried confused young lady lived. >> he could have died. i told him i'm going to slap. you could have died. >> andria borba, kpix 5. >> among the people who visit him yesterday was will hee brown. the -- willie brown. the woman remains in the hospital. president obama down in southern california today wrapping up his three day west coast tour. his schedule stops today include dreamworks animation in glendale and a fundraiser at the home of mar that kaufman the creator of "friends." this follows a stop right here in san francisco that was not completely friendly. >> what i'd like to do -- [ people chanting ] how about -- these guys don't need to go. >> an immigration activist heckled the president during a speech yesterday. 22-year-old juthhong is an undocumented immigrant from san francisco. he told kpix 5's joel vasquez why he confronted president obama. >> we'll venten our families. -- strengthen our families and most importantly -- most importantly, we will live up -- most importantly we will live up to our character as a nation. >> i said mr. president. i need your help. i cannot celebrate thanksgiving week with my family members because of my immigration status. i told him please, use your executive authority to halt deportation for all undocumented emigrant family members a-- immigrant family members across the country. you have the power to stop -- >> actually i don't. >> you've heard from some people you were saying, what did people say? >> it was very overwhelming positive response. at the same time, some people think that i shouldn't have done it. because it was very rude and because i mean i -- president obama and congress have always ignored our stories. and i felt like that was the only avenue for me to speak out the truth. latest cbs news poll shows president obama's approval rating has plunged to 37%. activists are demanding more serious charges against four san jose state university students accused of hate crimes. those students are accused of harassing a black roommate at campus village. the allegations include corralling the victim with a bicycle lock. locking him in his room and taunting him with racial slurs. the naacp took part in a campus rally yesterday at the tommy smith john carlos statue. and activists want the misdemeanor charges increased to felonies and want the suspects tossed out of sjsu. >> the suspension of those students must be converted into expulsion. >> district attorney jeff rosen says the misdemeanor charges reflect the severity of the crimes not the degree of the suspect's racism. sjsu president mo kaomi spoke yesterday taking responsibility for the university not intervening sooner. it is 4:36. we got a big holiday coming up thursday. >> yeah we sure do. we've got a cut off low spinning our way and that kind of has us on edge right now. not much but we're watching it closely. still out the door today got the high clouds cruising in overhead. the temperatures not as cold this morning. you can see the ridge of high pressure beginning to break down somewhat and that's going to eventually lead to the cut off low spinning off the coastline. you can see it there in the distance. still we are in for a nice day ahead. some hazy sunshine. and a few of those high clouds continue to track overhead. not quite as cold because of the clouds. still chilly in the valleys. 46 in san jose and 51 in san francisco. this afternoon though temperatures back up in the 60s all around the bay area including the valleys and even towards the coastline. we've got some changes coming toward thanksgiving though and we'll talk more about that in a moment. right now the kcbs traffic with elizabeth. here's a live look at the nimitz freeway where once you get closer to the downtown oakland exits that's where we start to see some lanes blocked specifically three approaching broadway. just a heads-up. more road work this time out in the east bay as well. eastbound lanes of highway 4 countercommute between harper and love ridge. three right lanes closed until 6:00. and also eastbound 580 year the dublin interchange. 6:00 a.m. that's when they're expected to wrap that up. in the meantime though things look pretty good so far for the commute out of the altamonte pass on the westbound lanes of 580. bay bridge there's road work on the upper and lower decks coming in and out of san francisco. and b.a.r.t. so far looks pretty good. eing is on time -- everything is on time. that's your kcbs traffic. back to you guys. california's bullet train apparently going nowhere fast. the sacramento county judge is blocking the sale of bonds needed to build the high speed rail system and also rejected the funding plan putting the project in limbo now. and some ferry passengers suffered minor bumps and bruises after an accident at fishermen's wharf in san francisco. the harbor princess had a breakdown and crashed into pier 43 a little after noon yesterday. witnesses actually saw passengers putting on the emergency vests just in case. but everyone is fine. well, it's the youtube video that millions have watched and just a week. >> now the oakland bay start-up that created it is dealing with more than just internet fame and may be headed to court. kpix 5's betty yu report it's a battle between bay area girls and the beastie boys. ♪ >> reporter: it's the charming youtube video that sells girl power and toys for future engineers. the viral video takes on gender stereotypes. a company is now taking on its first real opponent which happens to be boys. the beastie boys. ♪ oakland based start-up goldie blox rewrote "gills" changing lyrics to girls building spaceships and coding. today the beastie boys responded in an open letter to the company saying -- they filed a preemptive lawsuit against the boys, the complaint says that because its lyrics poke fun at the original song it's a parody making it fare use. >> i think it's ultimate lick unlikely to be -- unlikely to be considered fair use. >> reporter: the court may not rule in the company's favor because the video is an ad. >> the court's going to look and say this is something that where they could have gotten a license from the copyright owner to use the music. and/or to use it with altered lyrics in order to make their point. >> reporter: betty yu, kpix 5. >> the letter also says the band members made a conscious decision not to use their music to sell products? we reached out the company, the company was not available for comment. time now is 4:40. a winter storm is causing more headaches for those trying to reach their thanksgiving destinations. more on the impacts of holiday travel. >> and a new report out gives a clearer picture of the teenager at sandy hook elementary school. what we're learning now about adam lanza when we come back. ,, led to last year's deadly a new report answers some questions but not all about what led to last year's deadly shooting spree at a connecticut elementary school. kpix 5's allen martin has more on what was found in adam lanza's home. >> reporter: this is adam lanza's bedroom. the windows covered with black trash bags. a closet full of khaki pants, in lanza's computer room you can see the hard drive has been smashed and there are also newspaper stories from the 1800s about shooting school children. in his mother's bedroom, police found the gun that lanza used to kill her. right next to the book "train your brain to get happy." lanza killed 20 first graders and six adults at sandy hook. this is the window he shot out to get inside the locked school. also new details about his life including a preoccupation with mass shootings in particular the columbine shootings. before the shooting, lanza's mother nancy became concerned that her son hadn't gone anywhere in three months. and would only communicate with her by e-mail. lanza was diagnosed with asperger's. doctors described him as presenting with significant social impairment and extreme anxiety. he was also noted that he lacked empathy. but those doctors did not see anything that would have predicted his future behavior. allen martin, kpix 5. >> a report from the connecticut state attorney does not draw any conclusion about a motive. well, much of the nation has experienced or will experience snowy icy conditions. leading up to the big holiday thursday. wintery weather is blamed for hundreds of wrecks and at least 11 deaths half of them are in texas. major flight delays expected on several metro areas new york, dc, philadelphia and up in boston as well. hundreds were canceled over the weekend at dallas/ft. worth. >> we look forward to thanksgiving all year long and having a day cut off this trip is not the best thing in the world to me. >> people don't realize that when they cross the bridges they have ice on them and they lose it when they cross them. >> a lot of ice. on the positive side, the same weather system was a welcome boost for ski areas of course in colorado. well the weather could put a damper on the macy's thanksgiving day parade. strong winds are forecasted for new york and that could be a big problem for those big giant balloons that pass through the parade. emergency officials are going to make the call based on actual conditions from thursday morning in the big apple but wouldn't be the parade without the big balloons. >> i had forgotten about that. the winds going to be whipping on the backside of that storm. >> i guess we can't complain about a little rain here? >> that's even iffy right now. i think a slight chance of a few showers on thanksgiving day. out the door this morning, we have mostly clear skies except for high clouds drifting overhead. and the temperatures are running in the 40s generally. although we've had a couple of 30s showing up in the interior valleys. this afternoon a mix of sun and clouds and the temperatures generally in the 60s. so a mild afternoon again around the bay area with some hazy sunshine. high pressure now breaking down and sliding a little bit further to the east. you see the first system starting to work that ridge further east and bringing with it a few high clouds for today but it's rather weak system. behind that we've got what's going to become a cutoff low that's doing to spin off the coastline and move near the coast near the bay area maybe enough to bring us a few showers. then that will sweep down into southern california. in the meantime around the state, about 53 degrees and partly cloudy in lake tahoe and 63-degrees in yosemite. around the bay today we'll see the temperatures generally in the 60s and the south bay. keep you in the low 60s toward the coastline and into the 60s mid 60s in some spots in ther into yore valleys and then hazy sunshine and about 64 in alameda and 62 in sausalito. next couple of days, just a few clouds drifting on through. slight chance just a slight chance of showers on thanksgiving. dry weather returns and warmer temperatures adds we look toward the weekend. all right let's check on the traffic now with elizabeth. outside we go, the morning commute, here's a live look at the golden gate bridge. i almost forgot what i put up first. golden gate bridge traffic. everything looks really good coming out of marin county. in fact it's a nice smooth ride. from san rafael. member you're going out of town for the thanksgiving weekend coming up and thanksgiving thursday and right now things are pretty good. in delays along 101 through san bruno. and out towards the dublin interchange still that overnight roadwork in lanes and this time it is countercommute between hacienda and santa rita that isn't scheduled to be done until 6:00 this morning. in the meantime we're hoping to see lighter traffic obviously a lot of folks are starting to head out of town. so right now westbound 580 through the altamonte pass looks really good. with all green sensors popping up. there's some roadwork still on both spans of the bay bridge westbound and eastbound. that should be picked up here pretty shortly. and we're just getting word now of more ace train problems and they were super delayed yesterday due to switching issues and now ace train number one again signal problems out of stockton causing about a 15 to 20 minute delay. again that's train number one out of the central report spelling out the dangers firefighters face and the problem highlighted in that study is probably not what you would expect. kpix 5's elizabeth cook explains. [ sirens ] >> reporter: firefighters ride into danger every day. and ben flake a veteran of the livermore pleasanton fire department knows the risks. flames and smoke are the obvious threats. but another more silent killer, cancer, just took the life of ben's fire firefighterring partner of 17 years. captain paul. >> it's hard to explain unless you're doing the job that it just puts a bond with all of us over the years. >> reporter: while standing in honor 24 hour watch over paul's body, a lot of thoughts went through ben's mind. >> it used to be the biggest thing you were concerned about was fires, hopefully nothing happens to you in a fire. so now it's that plus now it's the cancer. >> reporter: cancer is such a known threat to firefighters that in california, it's treated as a workers' comp related illness. now the threat is confirmed by a just released study. researchers with the national institute of safety and health looked at the medical records of over 30,000 firefighters over 60 years. in new york, chicago, and here in san francisco. >> it appears to be substantially increased risk. >> reporter: uc davis professor jay beaumont is one of the study's researchers. >> can you imagine the smoldering rubble of a building all the different chemicals that are given off. >> reporter: foam stuffing in couches, fire retardants in curtains and upholstery and asbestos in older structures all produce known car sense jeans when they -- car sen jeans when they burn. -- carcinogens when they burn. and brain cancer, which is what captain paul died of. fire chief jim miguel says it's been wakeup call. >> he was a friends to all. had a beautiful young family. the organization had a hard time with this. >> reporter: miguel says new practices like air monitoring after a fire is out have made a big difference. >> it's not just about the fire being out now. it's about the products of combustion being eliminated before we tech off the masks and breathe. >> reporter: his firefighters now wash equipment and gear after every fire. and when an engine gears up to leave the fire house fumes are exhausted through a hose. for now though it's all about the cap pain. >> we carried him through livermore. probably 40 to 50 emergency vehicles in the procession. we had 2,000 people along the procession route that were there with american flags. this certainly certainly brought us together as a family. >> reporter: elizabeth cook, kpix 5. >> the cancer study is in the second phase and researchers are gathering employment records from the three fire departments to piece together more information. 4:51 now. checking futures trading on the tuesday, not much movement ahead of the opening bell for the morning. coming up cbs money watch alexis christoforous has more. >> reporter: another quiet day of trading in the holiday shortened week. yesterday the dow jones industrial average rose nearly 8 points and briefly topped 4,000 for the nasdaq for the first time since 13 years ago. the price of oil dropped in the wake of a deal with iran over the nuclear arms program. crude oil fell on monday. the temporary agreement does in the call for sanctions to be loosened on iranian oil ebb ports but -- exports but investors the believe that's not works. for the second time, the government is delaying the release of its monthly report on home construction. today, we were supposed to get information about how quickly builders started and completed homes in october and september. the commerce department is blaming the 15 day government shutdown for the delay and says that report will now be released december 18th. and gym clothing has become the new hot fashion item. spending on high end workout gear jumped 7% over $31 billion over -- i guess kate we're going to have a bit of a mess later this week at sfo right? >> reporter: that's not good news for travelers out here and it could be a nightmare for them not just because of the busy travel season of the year, but you couple that with that nasty weather and you could be late in time for that turkey. the storm is moving east dropping snow and rain and holiday travelers getting worried. >> it's going to be very interesting week. >> reporter: according to aaa more than 43 million people will travel this thanksgiving. bad weather already canceled hundreds of flights in the southwest. forecasters say air travel will be trickdy along the east coast over the next few days. cbs news travel editor peter greenberg says to avoid delays people flying need to try to leave early. >> some of the airlines are actually insent vising them saying we'll give you a $50 bonus. just leave now because it's going to get bad. >> reporter: most people will drive. some are choosing to get off the roadways and hit the rails. >> the railroad is a little bit more immune to some of the weather conditions that can peak driving or flying or other modes of transportation a little bit more of a hassle. >> reporter: forecasters say conditions will improve just in time for an easier trip back home. the snarl airport? san jose is projecting a 5% increase in passengers from this tim hats year. here at sfo and oakland officials there project up to a 2% increase. but if you are going to be traveling through the big metro areas you could expect some big time delays. now for a look at the travel forecast, over to lawrence karnow in the weather center. i don't think the timing could be much worse for the people traveling especially the eastern seaboard. you can see the storm system working its way out of the deep south yesterday and you can see a lot of moisture and a lot of cold air on the backside of it now but now working through atlanta and right through parts of the eastern seaboard now to the north. you have some very heavy snow and some places maybe more than a foot of snow. you have lots of rain out toward the coastline and the south. so it is going to be a mess as we head in toward tomorrow. still a clear start to the day at sfo. no delays expected there. so far with just checking for the latest delays and nothing right now. but that will likely change as we head throughout the day. rain of course going to be heavy in atlanta. mostly sunny into denver and houston you're looking at some rain there as well and new york some showers but that will likely be picking up into tomorrow expect heavy rain there. and it looks like in the western half, well, looks like they could actually see some snow. out over the bay right now we've got a couple of high clouds drifting overhead. otherwise the temperatures not as bad as yesterday. 30s and 40s in most spots and i think by the afternoon the numbers will be mild and you'll see temperatures running up again well into the 60s inland. as high as 65 degrees in san jose. 64 in livermore. and 62 in san francisco. all right, let's check out the kcbs traffic report with elizabeth. more ace train problems yesterday. several trains were way behind schedule due to signal issues. sounds like we're going through a similar thing right now. at least ace train number one is behind schedule. it's jumped up to 40 minutes. reported delays. so again just a heads-up that's out of the central valley. signal issues once again out of stockton. caltrain, ferries and b.a.r.t. system wide no delays. a couple of problems on the roads. eastbound 580 now a big rig lost a couple of tires, its sounds like everything is on the right hand shoulder. it is eastbound 580 at vasco road. westbound though the usual problem spots or at least the usual backups now heading out of tracy. and b.a.r.t. like i said so far all trains on time. good to go in all directions. outside we go and here's a live look at millipedes commute. westbound 437. so far a great start in the valley drive heading towards sunnyvale. that's your latest report. back to you guys. thank you. gunfire in east oakland put seven men in the hospital. the shooter sprayed bullets in the area around 96th avenue and olive about 6:00 last night. two of the seven victims are reported in critical condition. a woman in the area says she might have been shot if she hadn't ducked when she heard the shooting. >> i tried to run back in the store. when i did that i heard the gunshots and i hit the ground and bullet went straight through my ponytail. >> right through your hair? holiday coming up. so we wanted to show you the routes towards the airports if you are heading out of town maybe visiting friends or family, later this week, this is what it looks like near the airport. near oakland airport. northbound and southbound 880 looks pretty good right now. and they did pick up that overnight roadwork. it was northbound approaching your downtown oakland exits. in fact, in the east bay you're pretty much in the clear as you can see from these drive times. down the east shore freeway, westbound 580 and the nimitz. there are some hiccups though in the morning commute including this. an accident a lot of debris on this connector ramp. northbound 85 to northbound 87. the guadalupe parkway. it's almost blocked and one lane is open. but there are some delays in that area. they're working to clear it now. still a car crash but a couple of other cars also in the right hand shoulder. now except for that enaccident everything else pretty much -- incident everything else pretty much moving amount the speed limit. this was the problem spot yesterday. not the case right now everything is free flowing out of rich monday headed to berkeley. and the mcarthur maze. mass transit, b.a.r.t. good option right now. no delays system wide with 42 trains all on time. it's ace train that's the issue once again the signal issues. right now delays are 40 forecast, here's lawrence. yeah and that thanksgiving forecast could be very interesting but today a few high clouds drifting overhead. otherwise the temperatures not quite as cold this morning although still cold in some of the interior valleys. mainly in the 40s now although we've seen 30s in some spots inland. towards the afternoon, we'll find a mix of sun and a few clouds and hazy sunshine inside the bay. mid 60s there and also in the valleys and low 60s out toward the coastline. staying cool. high pressure now breaking down and sliding a little bit further to the east. we have a couple of week weather systems, the first one right here. the next one is going to become what we call a cutoff low kind of spinning around off the coastline and bringing with it a slight chance of showers into thanksgiving. but for now, sun and clouds and seasonal temperatures outside. around the state you go if you're traveling today looks like a good day to do it. 67 degrees and sunny in fresno. 63 in sacramento and also in the monterey bay. well, computer models showing you a couple of clouds moving on through mostly just high clouds. nothing too bad throughout the afternoon. but as i'm michelle griego. >> hi everyone, i'm frank mallicoat. we begin with a difficult situation over in the east bay. seven men were rushed to the east bay hospital after gunfire in an east oakland northbound. kit do has an update from the eden medical center in castro valley from some of the -- where some of the victims were taken. >> reporter: as you mentioned some of them ended up here at eden medical center. witnesses describe quite a scene out there last night. kids saw one man get shot in the neck with blood spraying out there. witnesses were very upset that the neighborhood was witness to that type of violence. it was 6:00. dinner time at 96th avenue and olive street and east oakland. barbecue was underway when a gunman sprayed 10 to 15 rounds into the crowd. a bystander named isabel hit the ground at the first shot. >> i tried to run back in the store. when they did that i heard the gunshots and i hit the ground. and the bullet went straight through my ponytail. >> right through your hair? >> yeah. >> reporter: the motive of the shooting is unclear. seven people were injured all between the ages of 23 and 31. it's not clear if the men knew each other or were specifically targeted. even oakland's interim police chief came out to see for himself. the chief says five out of their six crime response units have been assigned to east oakland. the more violent part of town. and he says crime for the most part is down. >> shootings are significantly down this year. murders are down this yore. so there's signs of progress but obviously stuff like this shows we still have work to do. >> reporter: and police don't have a lot of information to go on. they're asking anyone with any kind of tips or information to give police a call. live in castro valley. kiet do, kpix 5. our only problem spot is in san jose. it's the solo car crash and it's the debris in the road probably slowing things down. northbound 87 and northbound guards the parkway. remains closed. and police are out there now. we're actually seeing the biggest delay right now coming up northbound on 85 itself. here's the live look outside. through richmond westbound 80 looking great so far. from the bridge all the way down to the maze. only about an 18 or 19 minute drive time in fact. looking good at this hour. otherwise mass transit. ace train number one still behind schedule. otherwise b.a.r.t. looks good no delay there. ferries and caltrain are holding up fine. here's the drive times and current drive times is constantly updated -- but as you can see, in the east bay on here's lawrence. a lot of high clouds streaming across the skies this morning. helping keep temperatures up a few degrees out there. 38 in santa rosa. 39 in fairfield and 44 degrees in livermore. i think as we head toward the afternoon, we'll find a mix of sunshine and some clouds with temperatures well maybe just slightly a bit above the average. and comfortable. 65 in san jose. 62 in san francisco. and about 62 degrees in concord. heading across the country a completely different story. we've got a major weather system that has been making its way across the u.s. and this one now headed toward the eastern seaboard and the timing wouldn't be much worse. right towards the busiest travel day of the year and you can see the storm system sliding through with heavy rainfall down to the south right now and a mix of cold air and snow to the north. so it's going to be a rough couple of days here especial think tomorrow. that will be the worst day. a clear start so far at sfo. no delays being reported there. headed across the country. that will likely change rain into atlanta. sunny in denver. houston still looking at some rain there. and new york, going to sew some showers warning that this nasty weather could light up those travel boards with some major delays. with weather like this, people have a hard enough time getting around their own neighborhood. let alone driving more than 50 miles from home. that's what more than 40 million americans are expected to do for thanksgiving this year. through the south and northeast, the main problem may be ice. not snow. the roads might have looked clear in arkansas but drivers trying to get through washington county quickly learned otherwise. >> you get on the highway and the next thing i know i'm spinning. >> reporter: an air mass bringing. thes down as much as 20 degrees keeps creating icy conditions. >> people don't realize when they cross the bridges they have ice on them. when they cross it they lose areas, new york, washington, d.c., philadelphia and boston could see some of the worst delays. here what we're learning about bay area airports ma feta international airport in san jose is going to be fire department are in trouble because of an accident that happened back in june. the chronicle reports two assistant chiefs and three other firefighters are facing possible suspensions. they were all involved when a firefighter suspected of being drunk hit a motorcyclist and left that scene. some other bay area news now. a trial date expected to be set for the man. randy alonna. he's expected in the august -- suspected in the august murder of sandra cook. an investigator from oakland. he is due in the courtroom at 9:00 this morning. in san francisco board of supervisors will take on the parking meter issue again today. they want to replace 25,000 meters with new ones the agency would also like to buy 10,000 more but some are afraid the additional meters will replace free parking. last year the city collected more than $53 million from parking meters the highest in a decade. san francisco's city attorney has filed a pro preliminary injunction in an effort to prevent city college of san francisco from losing accreditation. the injunction filed yesterday calls for a delay on a decision by the accrediting commission. the city of san francisco has filed a civil suit against the commission alleging conflict of interest and politically motivated retaliation. lieutenant governor newsome wants more attention paid to community colleges and the state university system. newsome commissioned a report on the schools that will be released later today. that report says the percentage of young adults earning associate and bachelor's degrees in california is below the national average. more californians tied the knot in july than any other month in several years and there's a good reason. same sex marriage. according to the california department of public health, 38,000 couples married in july. that's up 35% from july of 2012. 29,000 couples married in june of 2008 when gay marriages were first allowed here in california before prop 8 banned it. the deal that would scale back iran's nuclear program is getting mixed reviews around the world. as tara mergener reports, some are applauding it while others are criticizing. >> reporter: president barack obama is defending his administration's historic nuclear deal with iran. >> we cannot rule out peaceful solutions to the world's problems. we cannot commit ourselves to an endless cycle of conflict. >> reporter: iran says it will limit the your january yum enrichment for six months and allow interceptions at select nuclear facilities. in return the u.s. and several countries will slightly ease some economic sanctions. that's welcome news for many in iran. stiff sanctions crippled the economy and it's hoped the deal will bring back jobs. but hard liners in iran are skeptical. the headline in the main conservative newspaper says americans not trustworthy. >> nuclear weapons. >> reporter: several u.s. politicians say it's iran that can't be trusted. >> they have lied. they have cheated. they have deceived for years and years. >> reporter: congressional aides say some senators are working on legislation that would reinstate all sanctions if iran doesn't comply with the agreement. the obama administration is worried pressure from congress could disrupt future negotiations. the white house is planning the next round of talks which will end iran's nuclear program. >> israel's national security adviser will travel to washington next week to take part in negotiations. little change in an hour from now. the short trading week started with a quiet day for stocks but still good. yesterday the dow rose 8 and nasdaq inching up by about 3. briefly topped the 4,000 mark for the first time since the internet stock bubble some 13 years ago. well, retailers, economists and investors are hoping consumers will give thanks by opening their wallets and spending a lot of cash. >> that's right. considering holiday sales can make up one fifth or more of annual seats, the boost will be great news for the economy as a whole. cbs news business analyst jill schlesinger joins us now. good morning jill. >> reporter: good morning. >> all right, so tell us is this year expected to be a good one? >> reporter: well, the national retail federation predicts holiday sales will increase by 3.9% this year. that's just ahead of last year's pace. some of the reasons for the optimism include the fact that household network is on the -- net worth is on the rise courtesy of a strong stock market and jump in home prices. the job market is showing gradual improvement. and gas prices have dropped sharply this year freeing up dollars just in time for the holidays. we just got to see whether people are going to part with those dollars and spend it in the stores. >> we'll find out. what should brave holiday shoppers know about the season before they go out with their credit cards and all that cash? >> reporter: you know there are six fewer shopping days between thanksgiving and christmas this year. so the deals are going to be great. to help you out, retail gurus say they are some apps that you should really check out to take advantage of those bargains. i played around with some of these yesterday. shopular send out alerts for coupons and deals when you're in the store or mall. zoomingo displays offers from over 100 local retailers. poach it is the largest coupon validating base on the internet and there's good old red laser which lets you scan bar codes when you're shopping. now of course you know i'm a boring old financial adviser, don't employee all the money you saved all year long. this app is called get it. it helps you keep track of shopping list and hopefully helps you stick to the budget you created for the holidays. because i know you created
