Adams brings with her decades of experience in agriculture, both on a state and national level.
âI have served in and around state government for nearly my entire career, 25 years or so,â she said in a recent interview.
Recruited to the USDA by former Under Secretary, Bill Northey, where she served as his Chief of Staff in a non-career capacity, Adams said the experience created strong connections.
âBill and I knew one another when he was Iowaâs Secretary of Agriculture and I was Michiganâs Director of Agriculture. During my nearly three years of service, I flew back and forth to Washington D.C. each week while my husband stayed here, in the Lansing area. As a retired combat soldier, my husband saw my work (with the USDA) as a deployment.â

The Michigan Asparagus Advisory Board has named Jamie Clover Adams as its new executive director, effective May 10. She takes over from John Bakker, who is set to retire as executive director after serving the asparagus industry for nearly 20 years.
Clover Adams brings more than 25 years of state and federal food and agriculture leadership and policy experience to Michigan’s asparagus industry. Most recently, she served America’s farmers and ranchers as Farm Production and Conservation Chief of Staff under former USDA Secretary Sonny Perdue.
Prior to that she served for nearly six years as the director of the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development the first woman appointed as department director. She has worked in various roles throughout her career, including the Michigan Senate, and as Secretary of the Kansas Department of Agriculture from 1999 to 2003. She is a farm girl from the small town of Saranac in Michigan’s Ionia County.

The package of bills would provide a path toward citizenship for millions of undocumented immigrants.
And farmers who rely on migrant labor are watching the developments closely.
They may be snow covered now, but these fields and trees will soon show signs of what farmers hope is a bountiful harvest, and migrant labor will play a key role in picking that harvest.
“The biggest challenge is getting enough of it. We went from 100 percent migrant workers at one time, back to 15 years ago we started seeing worker shortages for one reason or another and as a result we turned more to the H2A program, the foreign guest worker program,” said John Bakker, Executive Director of the Michigan Asparagus Advisory Board.
