The intimacy among strangers

Lives and ways of expressing emotions have witnessed a pronounced shift during these past 12 months. Normality has been replaced by a dehumanising reality that has regressed the traditionally mundane into a warped counterpart. Devices like the computer and the mobile phone have become windows, opening up into our minds and souls. Pawlu Mizzi The externalisation of our thoughts, opinions, emotions and hopes have become intricately dependent on social media. Human interaction has on occasions bee...

National Trust plants more than a thousand trees in Buscot

THE National Trust has planted more than a thousand saplings, just weeks after villagers criticised the charity for chopping up riverside trees. Residents of Buscot, much of which is owned by the National Trust, hit out after willows were pollarded along a stretch of the River Thames in February. The trust said that the traditional practice involved ‘cutting back riverbank willows to the height of two to three metres, and is carried out on a regular cycle of approximately 10 years’. ...

Champagne with Bacon: at the bar with a giant of British art

Francis Bacon in his studio, 1967 Credit: Ian Berry/Magnum Photos It was dark outside but, in the lamplit tobacco clouds of the Colony Room Club in Soho, the proprietor Ian Board, his great swollen nose flushed with anger, had hopped down from his barstool perch by the door and was shouting at Francis Bacon with cries like a dog’s bark, his voice rough as a cheese-grater. Grabbing an umbrella from the back of the stool, he began to belabour the world’s foremost artist about the shoulders as...

Max Porter's The Death of Francis Bacon: a novelist takes on the painter's final days

Max Porter’s The Death of Francis Bacon: a novelist takes on the painter’s final days Porter’s tribute to Bacon is a short work, dense with allusions, somewhere between a prose-poem and a play script. Francis Bacon was very particular about the way his works were displayed. He chose theatrical gold frames and decreed that the paintings themselves – the brushwork that “slips, slurps, smears, flares, blurs, fades, evaporates, abruptly dematerialises”, as the art critic Tom Lubbock p...

The Death of Francis Bacon by Max Porter review – last rites for a great artist

The book is divided into seven chapters of no more than eight small pages. All the chapters begin with Bacon’s invitation to his nurse to sit by his bedside while his ...
