A beautiful day around southeast Nebraska Monday. For the first time in four days Nebraskans saw the sun and warmer temperatures. Lincoln officially hit 49° Monday afternoon. That was the warmest since December 23, 2020 in the state capital. To be eve more exact, it was the warmest temperature the city had experienced in 455 hours! A big reason for...

Low clouds will continue to hang around over southeast Nebraska through at least the first half of the weekend. The reason for the cloud cover? A temperature inversion. A warm layer of air between 2,000 feet and 3,500 feet above the ground is locking moisture in the atmosphere from the surface to approximately 2,500 feet. Until we break the inversion...

Low clouds are camping out over southeast Nebraska for the remainder of the week and in to the weekend. Along with the clouds, areas of mist, snow flurries and fog will be possible through Friday morning. Visibility started to reduce quickly Thursday evening along the I-80 corridor between York and Kearney. High-resolution computer model data suggests visibility will be reduced...

We continue to watch a weather system come out of the Rocky Mountains. It is relatively disorganized and bring a light amount of precipitation to southeast Nebraska. Clear skies, a thick snow pack, and light winds tonight is a perfect set up for quickly falling temperatures Wednesday night. Temperatures will plummet to the single digits. Some locations may even approach 0° by Thursday morning. Winds will be fairly light so wind chills should stay above 0° for most locales. Sunny skies are expected Thursday which will help...

That was a pretty good snow storm! Not crazy amounts of snow, but enough for kids (and adults) to go sledding. Lincoln officially received 6.5″ at the airport. This makes today’s snow the highest one-day total since February 23, 2019 (8″). This is a list of the highest snow totals I could find around the Channel 8 viewing area. WAITING...

KLKN-TV December 28, 2020 7:12 pm UPDATE MONDAY 10:19 P.M.: Snow is starting to stick in south-central Nebraska. This is the view along U.S. 34 & Highway 44 east of Axtell, Nebraska in Kearney County. UPDATE MONDAY 9:09 P.M.: Evening computer models are starting to trickle in. It is interesting to see how there are definitely two rules of thoughts. A few of the computer models suggest a warm layer of air, residing 4,000 to 6,000 feet above the ground, causing precipitation to fall as ...

KLKN-TV December 25, 2020 11:11 pm We’ve got some ups, followed by a few downs, for the close of 2020 in southeast Nebraska. The “ups” come for the first half of the weekend. Even though we will have more clouds around the area – partly to mostly cloudy – temperatures should be able to make it up to the lower 40°s (east) to lower 50°s (west) Saturday. A cold front will pass through the region early Sunday morning. With the front, a few sprinkles aren’t out of the questions. ...

Skies are clear and winds are lightening around southeast Nebraska. Combine that with a little bit of snow on the ground and you’ve got a recipe for cooooold temperatures Christmas morning. Lows will likely range from 5° to 15° around the Channel 8 viewing area. Wind chill values will be down near 0° to 8° around sunrise. Sunny skies will...
