Wednesday marked the end of an era in Newport News, with Mayor McKinley Price delivering his final State of the City address before his term ends later this year.

During his final State of the City address Wednesday night, Newport News Mayor McKinley Price highlighted various accomplishments from the past 12 years. "Serving as the Mayor of Newport News is one of the greatest honors of my life," he said.

With 15 of 16 precincts reporting, Cleon Long, an engineer with Huntington Ingalls, appears to be the likely winner in a three-way race for the Central District Seat B.

The race featured no incumbents in the running, which means there are now brand-new members coming to the Newport News City Council.

The Newport News mayor and city council candidates faced numerous questions — drawn at random — during a Thursday night forum held at Hilton Christian Church.

Citizens heard from mayoral, city council and school board candidates Thursday night.

Three regular seats on the council are up for grabs in the November election, and seven candidates have thrown their hats in the ring. Since no incumbents are seeking reelection, there will be new blood on the panel regardless of who wins.

Nearly 400 people came to a trade fair in Newport News Monday in search of jobs, classes and trainings.

Newport News residents expressed their concerns to the mayor and city council candidates before the November elections.
