While one seat changed from Democrat to Republican, another appeared to have flipped the other way as of late Tuesday night.

If the results hold, conservative state lawmakers would have a filibuster-proof majority to enact abortion restrictions and other priorities that previously failed to overcome filibusters.

All summer, Democrats, and one pro-choice Republican, have blocked the state’s GOP-led legislature from passing an abortion ban. A GOP wave election on Nov. 8 could mean the end of that firewall. “We’re on a one-vote margin, nothing to spare,” the chair of the Nebraska Democratic Party says.

Its too soon to tell whether abortion will be a deciding factor in Nebraskas general election. But the lack of action this summer pushed some candidates to be more specific.

All incumbent state senators easily survived Tuesdays primary election, while two former lawmakers won the chance to reclaim their old seats in the Nebraska Legislature in November.
