He was arrested for the death of Christine Cole, 10, who disappeared in 1988 in Pawtucket after investigators claimed DNA evidence linked him to the case
Just seven months later the charges were dropped because the DNA evidence was too broad and did not specifically point to Monteiro as the killer

Mangaluru, Dec 28: A 17-page reprint of The Illustrated Weekly of India dated December 27, 1970, with special articles on Mangalurean Catholics written by Mangalureans, was released at Johnlyn Cottage, the residence of John B Monteiro, noted author and journalist in English, and the main contributor for the special issue published 50 years ago. It was also to recall and laud the initiative of Stan Rebello, a publishing professional, who passed away on January 12, 2019.
The reprint was released by William Pais, author of the illustrated coffee table book The Land Called South Kanara, (comprising of old Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts) which has seen repeated editions; he is also the owner of Orchid Art Gallery in Mangaluru.
