Families of the people killed at a Buffalo supermarket poured out their grief and made anguished pleas for action against racist violence Thursday, hours after the white man accused of massacring 10 Black people appeared silently in court to face a murder charge.

The 18-year-old charged in connection with the killing of 10 people at a Tops supermarket has been indicted by a grand jury and remains in custody after a brief court appearance.

On May 14, a gunman at a Tops Friendly Market in Buffalo killed 10 people and wounded three others. In partnership with Tops, the National Compassion Fund has established the Buffalo 5/14 Survivors Fund to provide direct financial assistance to the survivors of the deceased and those directly affected by this tragedy. Tops seeded this Survivors Fund with $500,000 to get it started. Other retailers, including Southeastern Grocers and Big Y, have contributed to the fund as well.

Tops Markets will be holding a moment of silence in their stores to pay tribute to the victims killed and injured in the mass shooting.
