Environment Canada is calling for upwards of 50 millimetres of rain, along with high winds, through Saturday. Temperatures are expected to drop by Sunday, creating icy conditions across the province.

Cape Breton Regional Municipality has started the monumental task of clearing sidewalks after more than 150 centimetres of snow fell over a week ago, forcing many pedestrians to walk on roadways, inches from passing traffic.

Sidewalks and secondary roads remain under piles of snow, which means transit service in the CBRM cannot operate. Officials say they plan to work through the weekend so buses can once again run on Monday.

Some Nova Scotians remain stranded in their homes as northeastern parts of the province and Cape Breton continue to slowly dig themselves out of a historic multi-day snow storm.
