A judge has approved a $2.8 million settlement in a dispute over unpaid work performed by aspiring hair stylists at a Michigan cosmetology school.

The Michigan-based Douglas J Aveda Institute, a cosmetology school, has reached a $2.8 million settlement over claims students performed unpaid labor unrelated to their field of study.

The plaintiffs alleged a common law claim that they were wrongfully terminated for refusing to violate state law and for exercising their rights. The state law at issue was the governor’s Executive Order No. 2020-59 and the director of Michigan’s Department of Health and Human Services’ Emergency Order Pursuant to MCL 33.2253 (MDHHS EO-April 2, 2020).
