>> great to have david muir by my side. and look at the crowd we already have out at the park, lined up all night for one republic. great friday. sam, already there. he could not wait to get out there to central park. >> it's going to be a good live event this friday morning. on /* we're going to get to those dramatic developments unfolding at this hour. the american spy fugitive, edward snowden, at the center of that case, emerging for the first time in weeks. let's get to abc's chief investigative correspondent, brian ross, who's been tracking this story from the start. we know he's been holed up in that moscow airport. now, we know exactly where in that airport. >> reporter: there's this new foe of snowden taken at the airport. looking much the same he did when he disappeared almost three weeks ago. snowden said that he's only in position to accept asylum position in russia because america has made it impossible for him to travel to latin america. >> we know three countries have said, look, we'll take you. >> they could take snowden, the 30-year-old fugitive if he gets there. yesterday, we learned that the flight that goes from moscow to havana, took an unusual route, it avoided u.s. air space and skimd the coast. this may have been a dry run to get him to cuba. >> a practice run or tail winds or something? >> that's what they said officially. >> our chief investigative correspondent, brian ross, starting us off on "gma." thanks, brian. now, to the latest in the high-profile trial of george zimmerman. the case expected to go to the jury today after the defense delivers its closing arguments. the prosecution already made its case, arguing zimmerman is a liar and guilty of murder. abc's matt gutman is in sanford, florida, with the latest on all this for us. good morning, matt. >> reporter: good morning, robin. after the prosecution's fiery closing arguments yesterday, right now, we're watching a very calm from zimmerman defense team, telling that jury, that not only is there reasonable doubt, that he's going to prove to them that zimmerman acted in self-defense. >> a teenager is dead. he is dead through no fault of his own. >> reporter: it was a closing statement packed with emotional punch. >> do you believe that there's an innocent man sitting over there right now? >> reporter: the lead prosecutor, animatedly laying out his case to the jurors. that george zimmerman is guilty of second-degree murder. >> why does this defendant get out of the car if he thinks that trayvon martin is a threat to him? why? why? because he's got a gun. he's got the equalizer. >> reporter: insisting zimmerman profiled, followed and targeted 17-year-old trayvon martin. >> when he profiled a 17-year-old boy that had skittles. >> reporter: at times, he is getting fiery. >> he automatically assumed that trayvon martin was a criminal. >> reporter: and other times, theatrical. >> poor zimmerman, he just kind of took it. he never did anything. he is dancing away. la, la, la. that's what he's claiming. >> reporter: most jurors listened intently. some stroked their chins or nodded. but the defendant, george zimmerman, stared straight ahead, stone-faced, until this. >> the man who is guilty of second-degree murder. >> reporter: some analysts say the prosecutor's closing may have been long on entertainment but short on evidence and may not have convinced jurors. what did you make of the prosecution's closing arguments? >> to make your entire presentation sarcasm, i think that's a turnoff to the jurors. i think trayvon martin deserved more. >> reporter: zimmerman has pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder, saying he shot in self-defense. later today when jurors get the case, they will have another option in their deliberations. on thursday, judge deborah nelson, allowing a prosecution motion to permit jurors to consider a lesser charge of manslaughter. robin, right here the key to it possibly, 27 pages of jury instructions outlining the prereck quiz sits of for second-degree murder and for manslaughter. >> thank you. we're going to bring in dan abrams. and the prosecution did exactly what you expected them to do. >> that's right. two, key issues. emotion and inconsistencies. and emotion is really the most important one, which is, they're basically saying, if it weren't for the actions of george zimmerman, trayvon martin will be alive today. that's not a legal reason to convict him. but that's an emotional one. and then, number two, with the inconsistencies, and i think in particular, an inconsistency with regard to how he would have gotten the gun. prosecutors essentially saying, he's not telling the truth that at the last minute he's getting beaten up and he grabs his holster and tries to pull the gun out. they're saying that story makes no sense. >> so, you're saying those inconsistencies are very important. >> as a legal matter, they're important. they're hoping that the jurors will ignore all of the statements made by george zimmerman. and basically say we don't believe any of them. but remember, matt pointed out the difference between manslaughter and murder there. but for both manslaughter and murder, they have to overcome self-defense. george zimmerman is saying that he feared, reasonably feared, grave bodily injury that he was on the bottom, getting beaten by trayvon martin, for murder or manslaughter. prosecutors have to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that that's not what happened. and that's the challenge that they have. >> dramatic yesterday. going to be dramatic again, this time with the defense. >> oh, absolutely. the defense has to respond first, present its case. and then, prepare for a final comment by the prosecution. >> do you think the jury will deliberate over the weekend? >> i absolutely do. it's up to them. they're sequestered. they don't want to be there. they want to get this done with. no question they'll deliberate over the weekend. >> thank you very much. now, we're going to turn to that developing story involving everyone's 401(k)s in this country. that surging stock market. the dow opening this morning after a brand-new record high. so good news for your retirement. but what's with the new headlines this morning involving mortgage rates and gas prices? i want to bring in betty liu, our newest abc news contributor. thank you for being with us. >> if you were lucky to have $10,000 at the beginning of this year, you would have been up $2,000. so, pretty easy money to be made in the stock market. there are three, big reasons. number one, you have the country adding jobs. companies are adding jobs here. number two, home sales, car sales, they're improving. and the third thing is, help from fed chairman, ben bernanke. he keeps stimulating the economy. and that's helping the stock market. >> that fed help is actually helping to keep mortgage rates low. but a two-year high for mortgage rates. already your payment is so different from six months ago. what do you do? >> that's right, it's been a big concern for homeowners. they've seen interest rates go up by 1%. a 1% increase can make the cost of a house 10% more expensive. and so, if you're looking to buy a home, you're looking to refinance, you better get it now because those rates are likely to continue to increase. >> and you're going to follow that headline about gas prices for us, too. up possibly 20 cents in the last 2 weeks. >> that's right. >> betty liu, thanks for being with us. >> great to have you with us, betty. >> thank you. now, to the latest on deadly crash 214 in san francisco. a fire erupted as crews trying to remove parts of the plane from the runway. the blaze is under control. and abc's david kerley has that story. >> reporter: a stark and stunning picture. the singed seats. so little left after fire swept through the 777. this was after the passengers evacuated. in fact, a first responder was stunned when he walked through the front of the cabin in the early stages of the rescue and said -- >> the seats in that section of the aircraft were almost pristine. he said it looked like if you just fluffed the pillows a little bit, you could turn the airplane around and it could go out for its next flight. >> reporter: but the rear of the plane, which slammed on to the seawall in the crash landing was a mangled mess. flooring torn away. that's where most of the injuries happened. >> everybody was just running. >> reporter: 90 seconds after the crash, as the doors open and the slides deploy, passengers started streaming out. and they started dialing 911. the first male passenger calling zblsh calmly said, we just crashed. >> there's a lot of people hurt and on the ground. >> she is severely burned. she will probably die soon if we don't get any help. >> reporter: passengers frustrated, begging, where are the ambulances? >> there is a woman out here on the street, on the runway, who is pretty much burned very severely on the head. and we don't know what to do. >> we've been on the ground, i don't know, 20 minutes, a half hour. and there are people with critical injuries. head injuries. >> reporter: the fire department said that 17 units were on the screen or on their way. >> not surprising at all. 300 people, that's a lot of ambulances. and no airport keeps that many ambulances on-hand and at the ready. >> reporter: now, we've learned that there were actually two calls to abort the landing. but it came in the last three seconds. the ntsb said all of the flight systems were working correctly. this points to pilot error. no final decision. but it appears that possibly the flight crew thought the cruise control was on. it wasn't. and they didn't have enough power to make it to the runway. robin? >> still want those answers. all right, david, thank you so much. i can't get over how calm many of those callers were to 911. >> and being told to stay on the plane for 90 seconds. >> i know you were out there. you heard about that. now to amy robach, in for josh, with the other top stories. and boy, you're kicking it off with a good one. >> yes, it's an incredible survival story. it's an incredible story of determination, as one man fought to save his family. john riggs' boat capsized off the maryland coast, tossing him into the water with his dad, niece, sister and nephew. as everyone clung on to the boat, riggs took off on a five-hour swim to shore. he was so tired when he got to land, he actually crawled to the nearest house. >> just not knowing what was going on with them while i was gone. it was getting nastier and blowing harder all the time. not knowing if we would be able to find them when we got back out there. >> he said a little prayer. and he said, all of a sudden, my feet hit the sandy bottom. i come out and i look around the corner. and there's a man standing on my deck. and he kept saying, i just need to save my family. >> wow. well, the family had been in the jellyfish-infested water for eight hours. but, incredibly, because of his determination, everyone is doing well. the mayor of san diego now says he needs help after admitting he's been disrespectful to women who work for him. and even intimidating them. but he's not stepping down. accusations of sexual harassment have been swirling around mayor bob filner for weeks. he's apologized for what he calls inappropriate behavior. just this week, filner's fiancee broke off their engagement. and talk about a special 16th birthday this morning. the pakistani girl who was shot and nearly killed by the tab ban because she stood up for her right to go to school is now standing up in front of the united nations here in new york, an inspiration to millions, she said that education is the world's most powerful weapon, so today, she's getting the u.n. secretary-general a petition, signed by 3 million people, urging global leaders to help give every child a chance to earn an education. robin and david, back to you. we're going to turn to the breaking news overnight on the federal guidelines of the amount of arsenic in apple juice. a very worrisome issue for so many parents out there. the fda now trying to ease some of the fears. and dr. richard besser has been following this one for us. bottom line, rich, is there too much arsenic in the apple juice our kids are drinking? >> thankfully, the answer is no. but apple juice just got safer. you may remember, about two years ago, dr. oz and "consumer reports" raised issues about arsenic in apple juice. this led fda to do testing. and for the first time, set limits for arsenic in apple juice. i spoke to dr. oz last night. he's absolutely thrilled that this change came about. >> you talked about the limits. what are they? and why is there arsenic in apple juice at all? >> well, arsenic is a mineral that exists in our environment. it's in our soil, our water, our air. they set the limit of ten parts per billion, which is exactly what is allowed in drinking water. that's a safe level. >> are they going to keep testing? how do we know that the limit is kept? >> i talked to the head of the fda yesterday. she said that they're going to do additional testing. what they look for industry will set this as their standard. they'll do their own testing. and fda will come on behind that to make sure they're following up. >> great news for parents out there this morning. rich, thanks very much. now, to the teenagers who helped track down an abducted 5-year-old girl. a 15-year-old and his friend, joining a group of first responders in the search for a missing little girl in pennsylvania, and hunting down the kidnapper. abc's rob nelson has their story for us. >> reporter: one moment, 5-year-old jocelyn rojas was playing in her lancaster, pennsylvania, front yard, thursday afternoon. and then, she was gone. >> it's something you don't wish on anybody. and horrible thoughts flashed through my mind. >> reporter: her mother called police. and a frantic search began. family, neighbors and law enforcement and crews fanned out. desperate to find the little girl. 15-year-old tamar and friend chris were on their bikes looking to jocelyn. it had been two hours since she had been reported missing, when suddenly -- >> we saw the car. and the car had the little girl in it. >> reporter: the two teens chased the alleged kidnapper for 15 heart-pounding minutes. >> if he wasn't going to stop, i was probably going to jump on the car. >> reporter: the boys say that the driver abruptly stopped and pushed jocelyn out of the car. he took her to police. unharmed, she was reunited with her mother. >> one of the best days of my life. >> he's our hero. there's no words to say it. i'm so grateful. >> reporter: this morning, the suspect is still at large. and police are focused on finding him. >> we've certainly all heard worse stories with not so happy endings. but this would be a much happier ending if we find the person responsible. >> reporter: for "good morning america," rob nelson, abc news, new york. >> what about that? >> absolutely not. >> reporter: the 32-year-old choked up as he talked about ignoring tara chavez's 200 phone calls the night before he found her body. >> she would call and i would hit the end button. and she would call. i would hit the end button. in the shift, i would leave my phone in the car because i didn't want to be -- i didn't want to be bothered by her. >> reporter: chavez is accused of shooting his 26-year-old wife with his police revolver at their new mexico home in october of 2007. he's pled not guilty. >> can you touch her? tell me if she feels cold. >> i can't look at her. please, god. >> please. >> reporter: chavez was there when the 911 call was played for the jurors. he claims his wife committed suicide because of the end of their marriage. >> they -- i couldn't believe what i was seeing. >> reporter: prosecutors say chavez killed his wife because she threatened expose what she believed was his plan to steal a truck to collect insurance money. he never was charged with that. chavez has admitted to several affairs, including one with a fellow police officer, whom he says he was with the night his wife died. >> it was disgusting and it was a disgrace. >> reporter: that officer was one of four former mistresses who testified. a trial laced with drama that will soon be in the jury's hands. and the defense claims that tara chavez was having an affair of his own, with another albuquerque police officer and the husband of her maid of honor. a long and eventful trial. >> so sad. very sad. thank you very much. what's going on with the biebs? you use them for your shower curtains. they're called "s" hooks. instead of using them in your bathroom, use them in your closet to hang purses, necklaces. really easy. but if you don't have a lot of closet space on the hanger, you may want to buy a second pole. and then, you can do it on the lower level. >> yeah. >> doubling your space. this is really a great way to do that thing that is hard for a lot of us. parting with the clothes you're not sure if you want to get rid of. what do you do? here's a simple tip. you hang clothes this way. once you've worn them, you hang them this way. at the end of the season, what you haven't worn, what is hanging this way, we don't need it. it's time to go. tough love. one final simple tip. this is one of my favorites. my producer, sabrina, gave us this one. bottom of the closet, really mess in. you can take rolled up magazines to stand up your boots. or water bottles. they're standing tall. they take up less space. there you go, everybody. simple tips. local hardware store. "improve this." say it with me. to find more tips, on goodmorningamerica.com on yahoo! and coming up in our next block, our party in the park is heating up. we have one republic performing live. so, stay with us. good morning. i'm kristen sze. body of the wrecked plane from asiana 214 has been moved from the runway and is it sitting next to a hangar at sfo. let's give you a close look at the fuselage that was moved this morning. crews continue to clear debris from the runway. they have plans to reopen that runway on sunday. new developments in a story we brought you first on abc7 this morning. fire crews arrived at the closed runway at sfo to what appeared to be a fire at the site of the wreckage. thick white smoke could be seen around the plane as crews worked to remove debris. we're being told it was not actually a fire, just heavy smoke caused by metal friction as crews cut the plane into smaller pieces. here's leyla gulen with your morning update commute. >> we are seeing areas of slow traffic especially along your 808 freeway coming through oakland along 580 as well some delays. but we also have this accident that just occurred a few minutes ago northbound 808 at 980. traffic slow there, but it starts to improve at the maze. kristen? >> thanks so much. we'll check in good morning. still gray around the bay helping keep our temperatures below average. even with the sunshine in the east bay valleys, livermore and your neighbors will be cooler than average. let's look at some numbers. 62 in san francisco to about 82 in concord today.
