Hansen | OBSERVER Staff Writer - The Center for Sacramento History has won the Leadership in History Award of Excellence for its short film series "Unlocking the Past: A History of Prejudice and Racism in Sacramento," which aims to tell stories from the region in a complete and honest way, addressing discrimination and its long-term effects on communities.

Sacramento's Kit Carson International Academy will be renamed Umoja International Academy in the fall, as part of SCUSD's commitment to address school facility names that do not support the district's values. The renaming process for three schools is complete, and the work to rebrand these school facilities will begin this summer.

Three Sacramento schools are getting new names as part of a rebrand away from the racist historical California figures they were named after, the Sacramento City Unified School District said.

The Sacramento City Unified School District voted to rename and rebrand 3 schools named for historical figures who killed and enslaved California's native peoples.

Students will return this fall to the rebranded schools.
