Karen Marais is tireless when it comes to her students. From the first day of classes, Marais, a School of Aeronautics and Astronautics professor, is intent on making sure the students don’t just learn, but interact with her as well.
For much of one spring semester, a student in her Introduction to Aerospace Design class sat quietly on his own despite Marais’ best efforts to connect. It was only when the semester was soon to end that he finally came out of his shell and opened up to her during class.

2021 Exceptional Early Career Teaching Award: Greg Strimel
Greg Strimel saw a void and set out to fill it.
With a nationwide concern about innovation capacity and transformative learning experiences, Strimel, an assistant professor in the Department of Technology Leadership and Innovation in Purdue Polytechnic Institute, along with his colleagues, developed and launched a minor in design and innovation in 2018. The goal of the minor: To provide the space and flexibility for all Purdue students, regardless of major or background, to practice innovation within the context of their own ideas and develop design-thinking capabilities in authentic cross-disciplinary settings.

2021 Exceptional Early Career Teaching Award: Megha Anwer
Nothing could be more noble than the pursuit of a more equal world. And Megha Anwer, clinical assistant professor in the Honors College, sees her classroom as the very space that empowers Purdue students to imagine and collaborate toward that.
A theorist of visual culture, with expertise in global cinema and issues of racial, gender, class and caste equity, Anwer invites her students to engage with the visual and literary cultures of the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries by exploring the power dynamics that infuse those cultures. She does this through her courses as varied and topical as the Evolution of Ideas: Photography and Film, Interdisciplinary Writing: James Bond, Hitchcock in the City, Alabama: The Radical South, or Images of Racial Violence.
