Sonic Youth drummer Bob Bert and other members of the Gotham scum/noise rock underground. The group lasted long enough to pump out two albums of urban, back-alley blues/country/folk rock, though 1999’s Knoxville Girls and 2001’s Paper Suit had more in common with Johnny Thunders than the alternative country hordes riding the range at the time. (That was no doubt the point, band heritage or no.) In a Ripped Dress consists of Suit demos and Girls outtakes, newly mixed by Teel in New Orl...

benztown Behind the Mic: Chris Ryan Chris Ryan is “The Modern Day Manly Man”. His voice does the heavy lifting. It’s tough. It’s edgy…but at the same time it can be sincere, trustworthy, and even gentle when needed. Chris has been working behind a mic since the early 90s. First in radio, then as a full-time voiceover talent. Chris’ home studio is 30 minutes north of downtown Dallas. Go Cowboys!     I’ve been the imaging voice for KEGL/Dallas, SB Nation Sports Radio Network/Nati...

In 2014, the singer channelled his aggression – and creativity – in a more fulfilling direction. The Lonewolves released their impressive debut album, Lost Songs Of The Confederacy. It came fully 35 years after the formation of the group in 1979. But, in fairness, there were mitigating circumstances for the delay. “The band had split up, so when that happens it’s very difficult to record anything, let alone an album,” King recalls. Even so, the consensus was that the Lonewol...

26 February 2021 It’s rare and welcome to burst out laughing within seconds of hitting play but the Melvins “I Fuck Around” — a juvenile cover of the Beach Boys’ “I Get Around” — is a total giggle retaining all the layered bounce and sunshine of the original, with a tad more honesty about what much music of that time was actually about. The outro, with its keyboard sounds and demand to “stop fucking around!” is disarming and sets the listener up in good spirits. That refresh...

Theres already a long list of artists in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame whove been influenced by New York Dolls. So isnt it time these pioneers joined them? Formed in New York City in 1971, the band released just two albums – a self-titled record in 1973 and a follow-up, Too Much Too Soon, a year later – before breaking up in 1976 with its five members pursuing careers in new bands and as solo artists. Neither album managed to break the Top 100, but the Dolls groundwork (like fellow New Y...

Whether it’s as a solo artist, forming bands ( Semi Precious Weapons, New York Dolls, Everest), Aaron Lee Tasjan’s never been one who can be easily pigeonholed. While his earliest solo work was in the singer/songwriter vein with Americana-flavor, since signing with New West Records in 2016, Tasjan’s released some infectious pop records with ’70s glam rock overtones and a style to match. You’ll hear as much Jeff Lynne as Tom Petty, as much John Lennon as Cheap Trick in Tasjan’s p...

Sid Vicious was a punk rock icon, former bassist in the Sex Pistols, a heroin addict, and a suspected murderer. In 1978, his girlfriend, 20-year-old Nancy Spungen, was found murdered on the bathroom floor of the Chelsea Hotel room they shared in New York City. Less than four months later, Sid died of a fatal heroin overdose. His death came as a surprise to very few people. Sid infamously once said, “I’ll die before I’m 25, and when I do I’ll have the lived the way I wanted to.” This i...
