Most of the thirtysomethings I know who got into TikTok this year did so for a specific reason: As the short-form video app’s cultural imprint has grown enormously during the coronavirus crisis, they wanted to understand Gen Zers and their obsession with it. Points of discussion: Why all the dancing? What’s the deal with Kellyanne Conway’s daughter? Why the constant roasting of their millennial elders? Jon Ossoff, 33, also joined Tiktok this year, also for a specific reason. But it wasn...

for the full episode. The problem with trying to understand the massive data breach the United States is dealing with at the moment is that the list of agencies and industries that have been affected just keeps growing. There are Fortune 500 companies, places like Microsoft and Cisco. Then there are state and federal governments: the city of Austin, Texas, the U.S. nuclear weapons agency, the Department of Homeland Security. And Slate’s Fred Kaplan says that right now, all of these places h...

is a series of dispatches exploring the rollout of COVID-19 immunizations. I got my Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine on Dec. 18—a date I think I’ll remember forever—at a clinic with rooms full of balloons. When I got home, I opened a bottle of Champagne. But perhaps a Negroni would have been a more appropriate celebratory drink. The occasion is historic but also bittersweet. The day I was vaccinated, America saw a record high of hospitalizations, with deaths continuing to climb. The numbers in ...

Dear How to Do It, I’m a married woman. I had a three-month affair with an old boyfriend, “Jim,” that ended abruptly two weeks ago when I got an email from a friend saying “Check this out!” with a link to CNN. I clicked and a page with a video player showing a picture of the guest bedroom in my house opened. Huh? I later noticed my friend’s email name had an 8 changed to a 3, and the CNN link was actually a hypertext link to IPaddress/myname. I clicked play and a message popped up: ...

Dear Care and Feeding, I need some advice about COVID and blended families with custody agreements. I hope this isn’t too confusing and that you can help us. House 1 and House 2 share Kid 1. House 2 and House 3 share Kid 2. House 2 has primary custody of Kid 1 and Kid 2. Kid 1 and Kid 2 are doing remote learning at an attendance-limited day camp because the parents in House 2 are health care workers. The parent in House 3 is in law enforcement. Kid 1 switches between House 1 and House 2 every...

Diane Mattingly sat on the witness stand in October 2007, prepared to share an account of her life that she had shared with few before. She’d been asked to do so by investigators working on behalf of her half-sister, Lisa Montgomery, who was on trial for capital murder and facing the death penalty. It had been about a year since Mattingly received a call on the landline in her Kentucky home. “Is this Diane?” asked a voice. “I’m part of Lisa’s team.” Advertisement Mattingly was ela...

Public health officials in the United Kingdom announced over the weekend that there is evidence that a mutation of the coronavirus in the country has made it as much as 70 percent more transmissible. As a result, Prime Minister Boris Johnson imposed the country’s most stringent restrictions since March in the London area. Canada, Israel, Iran, Colombia, Morocco, and countries in the European Union have put a hold on flights from the U.K. in an attempt to stem the spread of this new variant. I...

What followed was a startling pre-taped segment in which Perez proceeded to answer questions from an unidentified person that essentially dismissed several of the conspiracy theories that several Fox News hosts, including Dobbs had been peddling. “I have not seen any evidence that Smartmatic software was used to delete, change, alter anything related to vote tabulation,” Perez said. Fox News will also be airing the segment on Jeanine Pirro’s show Saturday night and Maria Bartiromo’s sho...

Charles Duhigg: So Erin, tell me what’s going on. Erin: I am a dog owner of two Portuguese Water Dog Poodles. One is very smart and one is not very smart but very lovable. His name is Chief and he has a penchant for underwear. And it’s not just a penchant—it’s an obsession. I have two teenage daughters who are overall great kids, but cannot seem to get the concept that if you leave your underwear somewhere the dog will eat them and then be in surgery. Charles: Oh my gosh.  Erin: Yeah. ...
