For now, the nearly 5,500 veterans in Aroostook County must wait for an opening in Caribou or travel to Bangor or Augusta for medical care.

Since October, the Togus VA Fisher House hasn't been able to host hundreds of families that have had relatives receive care at the VA Medical Center.

The new 7,200-square-foot, single-level facility will replace the former outpatient clinic located on Franklin Street in Rumford.

The Fisher House, which provides free lodging for families of veterans seeking treatment at the Togus VA Medical Center, has been open since February 2020, but officials say they do not know when it will reopen to guests.

The house is meant to host families near relatives staying at the VA Medical Center. Fisher House representatives said they are buying families hotels for now.
