At a time when more Texas teachers are leaving the classroom, the state’s licensing board is considering a new certification exam that could help better prepare new teachers — and perhaps help keep them longer in the job.

The Educative Teacher Performance Assessment is being considered by the state. Two other states have adopted the process.

Two states have dropped the Educative Teacher Performance Assessment, and three others passed on it or want it gone.

“When people hear the word 'free college,' you’ve got to dig beneath that headline to really understand the full cost and what is and is not covered through programs like these,” said Jonathan Feinstein, the State Director of Texas for the Education Trust, a national nonprofit advocating for educational equity.
