Troops in riot gear lined the sidewalks, but there were no crowds. Armored vehicles and concrete barriers blocked empty streets. Miles of fencing cordoned off many of the nations most familiar landmarks. Joe Biden was safely sworn in as president in a Washington on edge.

As Joe Biden becomes the 46th president of the United States at Noon, Wednesday, the top priority is a peaceful transfer of power. Between the pandemic and the security threat, it's an inauguration like no other. No crowds are gathering to watch the ceremony – instead 200,000 flags line the National Mall – and no parade or inaugural balls.
