First Mars livestream: the movie

(CNN) — In a first, viewers on Earth got a chance to see Mars nearly in real time.

A historical feat for the ESA, the Mars Express orbiter livestreamed images back to Earth to celebrate its 20th anniversary of when it was first launched.

Today, at 5pm BST, the European Space Agency (ESA) will be sharing images sent directly from Mars by its Martian orbiter.

The European Space Agency will livestream imagery from Mars Express in near-real time today (June 2) to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the orbiters launch.

If all goes according to plan, the images from the Mars Express stream will get to Earth about 18 minutes after they are taken.
