Happy 2021, everybody.
Without further ado, here are three
way too confident predictions about the Portland Timbers that are definitely going to happen in February:
The Timbers will sign a left back
I mean, one of these has to hit at some point, right?
Since last month, Portland has had more players depart than come in. Yes, Mora and Larrys Mabiala have been re-signed, but that backline in particular is looking frightfully thin. And even with the seemingly imminent signing of Josecarlos Van Rankin, the only left back Portland has on the roster at time of publishing is still new signing Claudio Bravo, who I’m pretty sure still hasn’t even set foot in Portland yet.

Well, from a pure drafting standpoint it wasn’t an extremely exciting 2021 MLS SuperDraft for the Portland Timbers. However, there was still some action on the day, as the Timbers traded away the eighth overall pick (which they had acquired from the LA Galaxy in exchange for Jorge Villafana earlier this month) for General Allocation Money and selected Dawson McCartney and Diego Gutierrez with the 43rd and 70th picks in the draft.
The Timbers made their trade just minutes before the start of the draft, sending the eighth pick to Orlando City in exchange for $100,000 in General Allocation Money.

Shortly before the MLS draft was set to start Thursday, the Portland Timbers decreased their presence in the annual event.
The Timbers traded the No. 8 overall pick to Orlando City for $75,000 in general allocation money in 2021 and $25,000 in general allocation money in 2022.
Portland now holds the No. 43 and No. 70 selections in Thursday’s draft, which is streaming live on mlssoccer.com starting at 11 a.m.

Forward Felipe Mora is officially a full-time Portland Timber.
Portland signed Mora, a Chilean international who played on loan last season with the Timbers, on Tuesday using targeted allocation money.
Across all competitions for the Timbers in 2020, Mora made 24 appearances (14 starts) and had seven goals and two assists.
