LIMA: About 25 million Peruvians are set to turn out on Sunday (Apr 11) to vote for a new president amid the country s deadliest week of the COVID-19 pandemic and a surge in new infections.
Voting is mandatory in the country of 33 million, which saw an average of 279 daily deaths over the past week and 384 fatalities in 24 hours reported Saturday - the third daily death toll record this week.

The National Police of Peru (PNP) and the Armed Forces guarantee security during the 2021 General Elections, which will take place on April 11, Interior Minister Jose Elice affirmed on Thursday. In order to guarantee security during the electoral process on Sunday, April 11, the National Police will deploy around 96,000 members nationwide, he told reporters during a press conference.
The dignitary pointed out that the entire force will be available except for those whose health has been hit by COVID-19 to also develop additional functions at police stations and specialized units in matters of public order and security.
