Concerns rise over Chinese investors

Concerns rise over Chinese investors Posted : 2021-04-05 16:37 By Kim Jae-heun Concerns are growing over TV series produced by local entertainment companies whose large shareholders are Chinese firms, after the YG Entertainment-produced Joseon Exorcist went off the air for distorting Korean history. The supernatural history-based drama, Joseon Exorcist, was co-produced by YG Studioplex, Crave Works and Lotte Cultureworks. YG Studioplex is a TV production company jointly established by YG Entertainment and Barami Bunda in April 2017, though the entertainment agency owns 99.09 percent of the production firm s shares. What is causing the controversy is that two Chinese firms, Shanghai Fengying Business Consultant Partnership and Tencent Mobility, are the two largest shareholders in YG Entertainment after its founder Yang Hyun-suk, and they could have played an influence in the direction of the drama to favor a Chinese perspective of history.

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter

By Jason Lim This is the movie that came to mind when I first heard about the whole brouhaha surrounding the cancellation of Joseon Exorcist, a K-drama that took extensive liberties with historical figures in the early decades of the 1392-1910 Joseon Kingdom. While I understand that King Sejong is one of the most revered figures in Korean history, Abraham Lincoln is probably not too far behind in the annals of American history. Yet, the movie about Abraham Lincoln hunting down and killing vampires was panned by the poor execution of the movie and not by the patently false premise. How is Sejong killing evil spirits more offensive to Koreans than Lincoln killing vampires? Yet, it was, and led to the cancellation of the series only after two airings.

Joseon Exorcist couldn t exorcise angry viewers

Joseon Exorcist couldn’t exorcise angry viewers 02 Apr 2021 / 12:50 H. Korean drama series Joseon Exorcist debuted to high ratings this week but the excitement quickly fizzled out due to a controversy. Just four days after its launch, broadcaster SBS confirmed that the show will be cancelled after airing two of its 16 planned episodes. Joseon Exorcist is set in the early 15th century during the reign of King Taejong, the third monarch of the Joseon Kingdom. The king and his sons, Prince Chungnyung and Prince Yangnyeong, try to protect the kingdom from zombie-like evil spirits. Although it’s a fictional story, some viewers took offense at the distorted portrayal of King Taejong as a tyrant. In the show, he slaughters innocent civilians due to a hallucination in the first episode.
