A former U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officer is accused of illegally bringing a Mexican woman across the border into the United States to work as a nanny and housekeeper at her home.   Rhonda Walker, 40, of Laredo, Texas, pleaded guilty on Friday to conspiracy to encourage or induce a foreign national to enter the United States, Acting U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Texas Jennifer B. Lowery announced in a statement.  In exchange for her guilty plea, federal prosecutors agreed to dismiss additional charges of conspiring to transport an illegal alien and making false statements, the Associated Press reported.

Lowery. Jose Maria Ramirez pleaded guilty on Nov. 24, 2020, while co-conspirator Eloy Martinez-Carranza entered a guilty plea on Dec. 8, 2020. On Tuesday, U.S. District Judge Marina Garcia Marmolejo ordered Ramirez to serve a 57-month sentence to be immediately followed by three years of supervised release. In handing down the sentence, the court noted how Ramirez has repeatedly broken the law and has had his supervised release revoked multiple times. Marmolejo further explained there was sufficient evidence to show he was heavily involved in the conspiracy and was correctly held accountable for the migrants in the tractor-trailer as well as the stash house.

Jose Martinez Torres, 37, a resident of Chicago, admitted to taking part in a drug importation conspiracy, authorities said on Wednesday. U.S. District Judge Marina Garcia Marmolejo will impose sentencing on Aug. 10. Martinez Torres faces up to life in prison. He has been in custody since his arrest where he will remain pending that hearing. The case dates back to Feb. 2, when Martinez Torres arrived in a 2007 Dodge Caravan at the Juarez-Lincoln International Bridge. An X-ray scan of his vehicle revealed some anomalies in the dashboard.

Lowery. Francisco De Luna pleaded guilty Aug. 3, 2020. On Monday, U.S. District Judge Marina Garcia Marmolejo ordered him to serve a 70-month sentence to be immediately followed by three years of supervised release. At the hearing, the defense argued for a lesser sentence due to De Luna’s poor health condition.
