When Eastern Cape Premier Oscar Mabuyane fired Health MEC Sindiswa Gomba on Thursday, he brought a chaotic 22 months to an end. Although Mabuyane defended the brash former ANC councillor, saying she tried her level best and paid a huge price by being infected with Covid-19, Gomba will be remembered for her disastrous handling of the coronavirus pandemic, even driving the normally sanguine Dr Zweli Mkhize to anger.
Her appointment constituted a brief but fairly disastrous diversion in a long line of Health MECs in the province who were mostly doctors, known for their empathy and their deep roots in communities but who failed to fix much in the byzantine bureaucracy that is the Eastern Cape Department of Health.
Eastern Cape Health MEC Sindiswa Gomba will continue in her job until she is fired by Premier Oscar Mabuyane, her spokesperson Judy Ngoloyi said on Monday.
“The MEC, as a cadre and a deployee of the ANC, will rely on the decision by the ANC and through the premier in this case,” Ngoloyi said after being asked if the MEC plans to step down from her position “This matter is being handled by the ANC in the province and by the Office of the Premier and therefore the MEC is not able to comment,” she said.

EASTERN Cape Health MEC Sindiswa Gomba is self-isolated after testing positive for Covid-19.
Her spokeswoman Judy Ngoloyi announced on Sunday, 13 December that the MEC was at home self-isolating as per the protocol for Covid-19 after her results came back positive on Sunday.
She said: “The MEC would like to advise all those she came directly into contact with to get tested for Covid-19.
“She will focus on her recovery safely at home while she continues with her duties at the very same time.
“MEC Gomba urges people of the province in particular, as it is experiencing a resurgence in Covid-19 cases, to wear their masks, keep social distancing, and wash and sanitise their hands frequently,” said Ngoloyi

“Her Covid-19 results came back today, 13 December. The MEC is at home for isolation as per the protocol of Covid-19,” department spokesperson Judy Ngoloyi said.
She added Gomba had advised all those whom she came directly into contact with to get tested.
“She has begun her isolation period commencing today. She is asymptomatic and will continue with her duties working from home. MEC Gomba would like to urge people to wear their masks, keep social distancing, wash and sanitise their hands frequently.”
