Enough has been said about Siaâs film but I wanted to give this more depth.
Sia is Australian and Australia has a place of deep significance within the autistic community and my heart.
Australian-born Judy Singer is recognized as coining the term âNeurodiversityâ which can be used to
describe the variety of human brains under which youâd find the autistic identity amongst any other norm-resisting identities.

Australia is a place Iâve wanted to travel to for a long time, before knowing of Judy Singerâs role in our narrative because of a band called Bliss N Eso, a rap group.

Tahira, a single mother of a child with autism, shared with me that the society’s obsession with normality had convinced her that her four-year-old child was “damaged” and she, as a mother, was a “failure”. Do you consider yourself to be a disabled person?
Yes: ☐
Prefer not to say: ☐
Yes. Because forms like this – and questions like this – always throw me into confusion, and sometimes into complete mind-stoppage. You appear to be asking a closed question, but ‘consider’ is a word I would use to open up a question. Forms are full of such questions, presenting themselves as straightforward logic gates, which on closer inspection turn out to be impossibly multivalent. Rather like everyday speech. You haven’t been specific enough, so I’ll just have to throw everything at you – at least then some of it will be what you’re looking for.
