The mixed ruling indicates the company may also be allowed to continue operating the Line 5 pipeline another five years until a new line is completed off tribal lands

The judge also said Enbridge must assuage concerns of the Bad River Band of Lake Superior Chippeway about potential environmental harms.

The oil and gas pipeline will operate across northern Wisconsin for now.

According to a federal judge, an oil pipeline in northern Wisconsin, which runs through an American Indian reservation, can continue to flow as operators reroute the line.

The Bad River Band of Lake Superior Chippewa sued Enbridge in 2019 demanding it remove the section of line that runs across the tribe’s reservation in Ashland County. The tribe is concerned the pipeline could rupture and contaminate its drinking water.
