Recent marine heat waves are being linked to an unprecedented die-off of seabirds that is now occurring annually as the seas get warmer.

Seabirds, from cormorants to puffins, spend most of their lives at sea. Beloved by birdwatchers, these animals can be hard to study because they spend so much time far from shore.

A new study, led by researchers at the University of Washington, has linked mass seabird die-offs to marine heat waves.

In 2009, thousands of surf scoters washed ashore along the outer coast of Washington. In 2014, tens of thousands of Cassin’s auklets littered beaches from Haida Gwaii in British Columbia south to Newport, Oregon. In 2015, hundreds of thousands of common murres were found from California north to the Gulf of Alaska. And in 2016, thousands of rhinoceros auklets died in the Salish Sea.
