So many of us have such concern and anxiety around grades, so if studying for a final or writing an essay over the Thanksgiving break can mitigate this anxiety, I don’t see anything wrong with doing just that. Mitigating stress and anxiety is similar to managing pain. When all the pain is concentrated in a single point, it becomes intolerable. When the pain is spread out over a large area, we can handle more of it.
Now why was I at a dirt farm at 2 p.m. on a Monday? I was on a field trip in PLSCS 2600: Soil Science. As an agricultural science major, my classes expose me to unique places near Cornell, from cider orchards to dairies, and the occasional soil pit. Our transportation varies from rented party bus to eight-seater van, and long drives make for interesting conversations with unlikely companions.
Like most Cornell students, I have always been told to strive for something greater. I’ve come to believe that I should try to see the world, chase my dream job and raise a family. These feelings of striving, of wanting, are always greatest for me at the start of a new semester.
