PEOPLE are making complaints about councillors based on how they vote on contentious planning applications. Three-quarters of complaints made to Kirklees Council via the authority’s standards process over the last six months have been found to have some relationship to the planning process. It has been described as “a source of frustration” to those tasked with investigating complaints against elected members. Legal experts say the emotive nature of planning combined with the general  lack of understanding of the planning process means the council receives complaints when perhaps it should not. Speaking at a meeting of the council’s Standards Committee last week, legal officer David Stickley said the majority of recent complaints around planning had been closed without any formal action as they were “largely without foundation”.
