TOKYO -- The Japanese Coast Guard said Sunday that its and police helicopters found four of the 26 people on a tour boat missing in the frigid waters of northern Japan since the day before.

The search for the others is still ongoing after the boat sent a distress call on Saturday afternoon saying it was sinking.

Following an intensive search involving six patrol boats, several aircraft and divers, rescuers found four people near the tip of Shiretoko Peninsula.

The boat was sailing in an area known as a difficult place to maneuver boats, due to the rocky coastline and strong tide, when it sent a distress call on Saturday afternoon.
