KOCHI: Ernakulam witnessed eight deaths due to mucormycosis infection in the past two months. The district reported total 16 mucormycosis cases after the first wave of Covid-19 pandemic last year. Six deaths happened in May and the rest in June. Of the deceased, one is a 40-year-old male.
Males constitute highest number of patients in the reported 16 cases with 11 and the rest five are females. Of the eight deaths, two were non-Covid cases. Doctors say the fatality rate of the invasive fungal infection in immunocompromised patients is 60-70%.

KARACHI: The Sindh cabinet on Tuesday approved disbursement of a relief grant worth Rs4.021 billion among people affected by last year’s heavy monsoon rainfall through the mobile banking system.
Presiding over the cabinet meeting here, Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah said that this would help the affected people to receive cash on showing their original computerized national identity cards (CNICs) to the mobile bank without going into the process of opening a bank account.

Inmate seeks education remission
The Sindh cabinet meeting held at the Chief Minister’s House on Tuesday was informed that the brother of an inmate at Karachi Central Jail, Zohaib Rehman, has filed a Constitutional Petition (CP) before the high court seeking education remission in favour of his brother, Junaid Rehman.
Under the Rules, “a convicted prisoner who has already passed any examination specified in the rules may appear in any one of the said examinations in an academic year, and shall on passing such examination be entitled to earn remission.”
The cabinet was informed that Junaid had passed the Quran Nazra in the first position, which made him eligible for a three month remission. Besides, among other qualifications, he has cleared BCom in first position from the University of Karachi, which makes him eligible for 10 month remission. The petitioner prayed that the inmate was convicted under the Anti-Terrorism Act 1997 but educational remissions could not be granted
