The 2020 baseball season was supposed to be a special one for Weymouth American Junior Legion.
Junior American Legion coach Jeremy Anderson and his assistant Paul McElroy, Senior Legion coach Mike Connelly and General Manager Peter Sheridan started their work at the end of 2019 to successfully bring the state tournament to Libby Field.
However, the 2020 American Legion season was wiped out because of the COVID pandemic, which forced the Junior Legion team to make changes.
The team had over 30 players try out for a position before the season began, and the coaches created two teams with all of these players.

A year ago, the American Legion Baseball season was canceled due to the pandemic. As a result, the Mass Independent Baseball League was created by Legion and Junior Legion teams to provide players from both divisions a chance to play a shorter season.
The easing of the pandemic allowed American Legion to resume play this year, but the games began a couple of weeks later because the high school baseball season ended in the latter part of June.
“It is still a six-week season,” said Weymouth American Legion Post 79 coach Mike Connelly who begins his 14th season said. “It is very different. We play everyone in the Zone once and start the playoffs. We then come back and play everyone again and then do another playoff. It will be two sets of playoffs this year because we need a District 6 (for the state tournament) by July 24.”
