Pie maker Pukka announces £4 5m Syston bakery investment

Pie maker Pukka has announced a £4.5m investment at its Syston bakery to enhance its manufacturing capability and gear up for future growth. The investment follows the release of annual figures to May 2020 showing the Leicestershire-based company’s turnover rising to £53.1m and profit up 13.5% at £4.1m. “Our announcement of continued investment in the Syston bakery will further reinforce Pukka’s position as a key employer in the region, with local people being at the heart of our success and future vision,”​ said Deborah Ewan, CEO of Pukka. Foodservice hit​ Ewan insists the business remains in good health despite an impact on its foodservice division due to COVID-19, which makes continued investment possible.

At first glance, it seems a similar story in shoppers’ homes. Unit sales of savoury pastries from grocery chillers have fallen by 10.3 million kg – roughly equivalent to 50 million single-portion pies – after brands shed 7.5% of volumes. Look closer at the numbers, though, and a more positive picture emerges. Six of the top 10 savoury pastry brands have actually achieved volume growth. The problem is in the number four slot: Wall’s. It has almost single-handedly driven the sector into decline, shedding 9.7 million kg.
