Soldiers remain at Bobi Wine s home despite court order

Ugandan police and the army were Monday evening still deployed at the residence of former presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi popularly known as Bobi Wine in Magere village, Wakiso District, despite a court earlier ordering them to leave immediately. Instead, military and police deployments had been reinforced and checkpoints on the road to his residence had also been increased from two to four when Daily Monitor went to Magere at about 9.30am. By 2pm Monday when Daily Monitor left the area, there were four roadblocks manned by police and the army on Magere road off Gayaza-Kampala road. Journalists stopped Two cars carrying journalists were stopped at the second roadblock and ordered to go back. Many cars heading to or returning from Magere were thoroughly checked.

Justice Michael Elubu, who heads the court’s civil division, said if the government had evidence against Wine, he should be charged in court and not “held unjustifiably at his home,” according to Musisi. Wine, a popular singer, was the main opposition frontrunner in the presidential elections held on January 14 and his home has been surrounded by military and police since the elections ended.

Uganda high court orders end to Bobi Wine house arrest AFP 1/25/2021 AFP © SUMY SADURNI Security forces surrounded the home of Ugandan opposition leader Bobi Wine after he returned from voting on January 14 Uganda s High Court on Monday ordered security forces to end their confinement of presidential election runner-up Bobi Wine.  Wine, whose real name is Robert Kyagulani, has been under de-facto house arrest at his home outside the capital, Kampala, since he returned from voting on January 14.  Heavily armed soldiers and police officers surrounding the property have blocked members of Wine s household, including his wife, Barbie, from leaving their compound.
