Food charity had an immediate uptick in interest for their food parcels after lockdown was announced, and now thy're offering to take foods that woud have otherwise gone to waste.
The initiative has since spread across the region, with parcels picked up in Murchison, Richmond, Nelson, Motueka, and Tapawera. Packer lived in Texas for 12 years and ran an organic food co-op which provided the inspiration for Kai With Love on her return to New Zealand. ”It does your heart good – I think that everyone who volunteers with us comes in and does it.” Packer’s efforts to provide for those in need saw her named one of four Nelson Tasman Kiwibank Local Hero Medallists, in the top 100 for the 2021 New Zealand local hero of the year award. ”Giving is my love language – growing up we didn’t have a lot of money but my father was someone who made the best of every opportunity and every provision he had – since then I’ve always found myself in things where I was able to find an opportunity to meet a need.”
