As
workers and their families wake to the news that Norske Skog
is now considering closure of their long-standing Kawerau
pulp and paper mill, the debate between free markets and
Government intervention comes into stark contrast. Or does
it?
The possible closure of the Kawerau mill comes
inconveniently close to the same potential fate for the
nearby Whakatane Board Mill in the Bay of Plenty. While
others may consider this a minor regional issue, there is a
high multiplier effect throughout the Bay of Plenty and
South Waikato regions in that these mills also support

Husband and wife art team Lissy and Rudi Robinson-Cole at their home in Otahuhu, Auckland. Together they create dayglo Whakairo and pou from polystyrene and crochet. Rudi describes their work as “igniting joy globally”.
Artists Lissy and Rudi Robinson-Cole are building a wharenui to celebrate Matariki 2022, but there won’t be a stick of wood in sight It will be a whare whakairo, a carved meeting house, with star-spangled pou telling the story of the annual celestial event. But rather than chisels and mallets, the Robinson-Coles use hot wires and crochet needles; in place of wood, polystyrene and miles of dayglo yarn, the brightest they can find.
A vegetation fire has broken out in the Kaingaroa Forest, southeast of Rotorua.
Fire crews have managed to douse a blaze that covered 2 hectares of bush, southeast of Rotorua. Fire and Emergency New Zealand were alerted to the fire in the Kaingaroa Forest about 3.50pm on Saturday. A helicopter was brought in to help fire crews battle the blaze, alongside four water tankers and three fire trucks. The bush fire has since been extinguished.
