KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 26 Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak’s bid to disqualify Datuk Seri Gopal Sri Ram as prosecutor in the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) audit tampering case trial will be heard tomorrow at the High Court as scheduled.
On Jan 12, the Federal Court Chief Registrar’s Office in a statement said that all hearings of criminal cases in open court initially scheduled for Jan 13 until Jan 26 were postponed following re-implementation of the movement control order (MCO) to curb the spread of Covid-19.
With the Movement Control Order (MCO) having been implemented again, Bank Negara Malaysia’s first monetary policy committee meeting of the year will be in the spotlight this week. Although economists see a less severe economic impact from this round of MCO, they do not rule out another interest rate cut at the monetary policy committee meeting on Jan 20.
“In view of the worsening pandemic, tighter containment measures and weaker growth outlook, we have pencilled in another 25-basis-point (bps) policy rate cut. This will bring the overnight policy rate to a new low of 1.5%,” UOB Global Economics & Markets Research said in a report last Friday.
The court trials involving former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak and former deputy prime minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, previously scheduled to continue this week, have all been postponed due to the reinstatement of the government-imposed movement control order (MCO) in the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur.

Kuala Lumpur: The 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) audit tampering trial involving former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak

The trial was scheduled to continue on Monday but has to be postponed following the implementation of the Movement Control Order (MCO) in six states from Jan 13 to 26 to curb the spread of Covid-19.
The trial will resume on Feb 22 at the High Court here before Justice Mohamed Zaini Mazlan if the MCO was not extended, said deputy public prosecutor (DPP) Ahmad Akram Gharib when contacted Friday.
ON July 28, Malaysia’s once highest ranking politician was found guilty of criminal charges all seven counts of abuse of power, criminal breach of trust (CBT) and money laundering related to RM42 million belonging to state-owned SRC International Sdn Bhd.
High Court Justice Mohd Nazlan Mohd Ghazali did not mince his words when he declared former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak guilty of what he described as the “worst case of abuse of position and betrayal of trust” in the country. It was also the first ever conviction of a former prime minister, marking a new low for Malaysia.
